Shiro’s birthday was something that Adam celebrated each year after Shiro’s disappearance. Every February 28th, or February 29th depending on the year, Adam would wake up and make Shiro’s favorite breakfast. He would make enough for two, a hidden part of him praying that Shiro would return this time, that he would come home and Adam would have a plate ready for him.
Years went by and Adam never stopped loving Shiro.
He was uncertain, afraid, but the love he felt for Shiro only managed to grow stronger ever since he was announced missing. Presumed dead.
Adam knew better. Especially when Keith (and a handful of other students that Adam remembers) disappear in an unexplained manner. Adam wishes he could have said hello to Keith in the few moments he was back at the Garrison. It’s been so long since he was able to see his fiancé’s little brother.
He knew, realistically, that there was no way that Shiro was still alive. How could he be?
But then Matt returned to Earth. He came with news that Shiro was, in fact, still alive. It was after this that Adam began to hope that someday Shiro would return to him.
And he did.
Despite everything that had happened, both between Adam and Shiro as well as within Shiro’s life since he was last on Earth, the two immediately rekindled their flame.
Which meant that the first birthday that Shiro had after he returned was able to be celebrated with Adam.
”Good morning,” Adam whispers, a small smile on his face.
”Hi,” Shiro rubs his eyes with his hand then looks at Adam. The fondness in Shiro’s eyes nearly brings Adam to tears.
”Do you want breakfast?”
”Mhm…”
”I’ll be right back then. I love you,” Adam kisses Shiro’s forehead and begins to walk away.
His wrist is held in place and he turns to look at Shiro.
”Yes?”
”Stay. I want to be by you before we have to leave the bed for food.”
”I could bring the food over here, that isn’t too difficult to do.”
”I guess that’s true,” Shiro mumbles. He doesn’t let go of Adam’s arm.
Adam never considered a reality where Shiro wouldn’t let Adam make him food on the morning of his birthday. Every year prior to this one, while Shiro was gone, Adam would get out of bed immediately and begin cooking. That’s how it was before Shiro left, too. Usually Adam would wake up and get up.
Not this year, though. Instead, he is forced to lay back down by Shiro.
”Don’t want you to leave me yet…” Shiro wraps his arms around Adam and holds him close.
”Didn’t you want breakfast, though?”
”Not yet. I want to be with you longer.”
”You’ll be with me all day, I promise.”
”I’m not ready for you to leave me this morning.”
Adam stops arguing, not that he was truly arguing in the first place.
“Okay, love. I’ll stay right here until you are ready for breakfast.”
“M’kay…”
It took Shiro two hours of drifting in and out of sleep, holding onto Adam the entire time, for him to finally be ready to get up for the day. The entire time, he had at least one hand on Adam.
”Hey Adam?”
“Yes, Takashi?” Adam looks at Shiro.
”I love you.”
”I love you too,” Adam smiles.
”Adam?”
”Mhm?”
Shiro kneels, “The best birthday gift you could ever give me is your hand in marriage. Will you marry me? Please?”
Adam gawks at Shiro, a hand against his lips.
”Takashi..”
”I love you. I want to be with you forever. That has never changed. Ever since I got back, and we got together again, this is all I have wanted.”
”Oh my god…”
”Will you ma—“
”Yes, Takashi!” Adam says and hugs Shiro, knocking them both onto the ground.
Shiro laughs, arms holding tight onto Adam.
“Happy birthday to me,” Shiro whispers, “Best day ever..”
