A Sanctuary in the Sea of Space

Summary:

A routine reconnaissance flight. A mapped debris field. Ordnance that should have been flagged.

One explosion, and Jedi Commander Serra Vey and Commander Cody are alone in a crippled shuttle — no hyperdrive, no long-range comms, twelve days of sublight between them and the nearest Republic relay. The heat is failing. The rations won't last. The engines are dying by inches.

Twelve days in a cockpit the size of a supply closet, with nothing to do but survive, and nowhere to hide from the person you've been careful not to look at too closely for fourteen months.

The math is simple. The math is not the problem.

Notes:

Hello! Back with another one. Fair warning: this story fought me the whole way. (I wrote five other fics while trying to wrangle it into shape.) It's got some classic tropes, but the stakes run higher than what I've posted so far.

Don't worry — I'm not here to make you suffer. Much. You'll see what I mean. Let's get to it...

Chapter 1: The Recording

Chapter Text

Recorded message: Cresh-Seven-Seven emergency beacon
Timestamp: 0347 hours

"General Kenobi, this is Commander Vey aboard shuttle Cresh-Seven-Seven. Commander Cody is with me. We're both alive."

[Pause.]

"Twelve days ago, our shuttle sustained critical damage from unmapped Separatist ordnance in the Kessara debris field. Hyperdrive destroyed. Long-range comms destroyed. We've been running on sublight toward the nearest Republic comm relay, but the relay is offline, and we… we don't have the supplies or engine capacity to reach the next one."

[Pause. When the voice returns, it is quieter, more careful.]

"I'm attaching our nav logs and system diagnostics so you'll have a record of what happened. For the official report: Commander Cody's conduct has been exemplary. He kept this shuttle flying through conditions that should have killed us three times over. Please make sure that's noted."

[A longer pause. The sound of a slow breath.]

"It was an honor to serve with you, General. May the Force be with you."

[The recording ends.]
