Work Text:

Basil yawned, covering his mouth with his hand. It had been a peaceful, lazy Sunday. His hair waved slightly under the breeze from the ceiling fan.

The morning had passed by slowly and silently. Only the gentle hum of the fan above him and the sound of his breaths filled the quiet

His legs were beginning to tingle, stuck beneath Sunny’s head—he was still asleep.

Basil lowered his hand, resting it on Sunny’s head. Sunny’s expression softened, a smile easing onto his face.

An earnest smile found its way to Basil’s face too. He sighed, content.

Absently, he gently ran his fingers through his soft, silky hair. Sunny stirred softly, humming, leaning into Basil’s touch. Like a cat seeking pets.

“Good morning.” Sunny mumbled.

Basil exhaled.

“It's already 11:30, silly.” He brushed the hair out of Sunny’s eyes.

“Still morning to me.” Sunny yawned, closing his eye again.

Basil adjusted himself slightly, being careful not to disturb Sunny and rustling the cushion’s fabric.

The silence resumed, as soft as ever.

Basil looked down at Sunny. He watched his chest rise and fall with each breath. The subtle changes in expression and occasional soft hum as he continued running his fingers through his hair.

He stifled a giggle, like it would shatter the moment. This time was precious to him, and Basil had learned how fragile peace could be.

And he couldn't lose it again.

He took a deep breath, in sync with Sunny.

His chest warmed.

But then Sunny’s face scrunched up, like he just ate something sour. Basil froze. Was Sunny uncomfortable? Did he do something wrong?

Basil opened his mouth to ask but—

Suddenly, Sunny shot up, turning towards Basil. “Let’s go on a date.”

Basil froze as heat rushed to his face. “Wha— H-huh?”

Did he really just say that? It was just a joke right? His eyes searched Sunny’s face, seeing the resolve in his eyes. No. It wasn't — Sunny meant it.

Basil swallowed.

“I mean…” Sunny twiddled his thumbs, his gaze tracing the couch cushion.

“We’re dating, right?” A slight tinge of red dusted his cheeks as he glanced back towards Basil.

“I—Uhmm…” Basil’s heart leaped.

They were, weren't they? He opened his mouth — stopped. He almost didn’t want to say it, like naming it would make it disappear. But he couldn’t say no. There was a part of him that had to say it.

“Yeah.” The word slipped out, louder than normal. “I guess we are.”

Sunny’s eye widened, his lips tugging upward.

He nodded. “But, we haven’t had a date yet.”

His eye set itself on Basil’s face, staring — too intently. Basil found his gaze stuck on Sunny too. His breath caught.

“Do you have anywhere you want to go?” Sunny asked.

He tore his gaze away. “I don’t know…” His eyes drifted away from Sunny.

“I’m fine staying home.” His hand found the edge of the couch, clutched the couch cushion tightly.

“You don’t need to do all that for me.” His chest ached, a weight clawing at him from inside.

“Basil.” Sunny said firmly, cupping Basil’s cheeks in his hands, feeling the warmth from them. His thumbs brushed gently across them.

Basil swallowed, his heart pounding louder than he thought possible. Sunny’s gaze held him, and slowly—so very slowly—he turned Basil's head back towards him.

Basil’s eyes widened, forced on Sunny. His cheeks reddened. He froze.

“I want to.” Sunny whispered, softer than the air itself.

Basil let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. “O-oh…”

He paused, breath shaky. “I guess… if you want to.”

Sunny’s lips tugged downward. “Do you want to?”

“I—” Basil cut himself off.

He looked straight at Sunny; his expression firm, serious. Like his answer was the most important thing to consider.

Closing his eyes, Basil took a deep breath, exhaling through his mouth. What did he want? When was the last time he was asked that?

The heat from Sunny’s hands spread through him. He opened his eyes slowly, seeing Sunny still staring at him with a smile. A smile that seemed to be glad he was taking his time.

His grip on the couch loosened. “Yes.” He said breathlessly, beginning to smile. “I do.”

Sunny's gaze softened. “A date then.”

Basil closed his eyes again, leaning into Sunny’s hands.

“Yeah… a date.” He replied quietly, smiling.

Sunny began to lower his hands from Basil’s cheeks. But Basil grabbed one, leaning his head against it and letting the warmth wash over him.

“Thank you.” Basil whispered.
