From the Dream Journal of Calisuma Broque

Summary:

Leela keeps dreaming about Naboo— and a strange alien child who becomes her friend.

Notes:

Using at least 400 words, write a story about a character who keeps dreaming of a place they’ve never been.

This story's frame narrative will probably not make complete sense unless you have read Stars In Their Multitudes, my main Star Wars work.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

I was in a beautiful palace full of humans. They were dressed like Naboo— colorful robes, blue and red uniforms. I was wearing an orange robe. I think I was human too— my hand was brown instead of turquoise. A dark human in brown robes arrived with a little hovering pod. His robes had this embroidered gold design on them— must sketch later. He was a Jedi. Inside the pod was the cutest little baby. I don’t know what species he was. I think my brain made it up. He was green with big eyes and big pointy ears, and his little hand had two fingers and a thumb. My name was Makea in the dream. My mistress (the queen?) was named Paikea. She ordered me to take care of the child while she talked with the Jedi. I stuck my finger out and the little baby wrapped his cute little claws around it.

When I looked out the window, I thought I was in Lutecia for a second. Probably because Pasir was settled by Naboo. I’ve always wanted to visit Naboo. I’ve seen holopictures and it looks absolutely beautiful— and the fashion! I love love *love* Naboo fashion. I was just reading about it before I went to sleep. No wonder I dreamed about it last night. The queen looked like Apailana of Naboo. No idea where the goblin baby came from.

I was in a nursery. It looked like part of the palace from that dream I had a few months ago. The goblin baby was there in his little hoverpram. I took him out and played with him. I don’t remember the name I called him. He had blocks and toy tanks and starships. I picked up a little star yacht and told him to make it fly. He closed his eyes and it started flying around the room like it was a real spaceship. Then another girl (I think her name was Isakea?) came in and told me off. She said I wasn’t supposed to let him use his “powers” because it was too dangerous. She took over and sent me off.

This is the third dream I’ve had about being a Naboo handmaid. I had one a couple weeks ago and forgot to write about it. That dream was really similar to this one except Paikea was there. She was a handmaiden instead of the queen in that dream, and we were best friends. It reminded me of talking with Sarad from the morut. I miss her a lot. I haven’t really had any friends since Papa and I moved out of the morut (except Papa of course— he’s my friend!)

I was back on Naboo. There was this cute royal guard who reminded me of Park Boy. I kept smiling at him and he kept smiling back. He was soooooo cute. I really wanted to show him the goblin baby but I knew it wasn’t allowed. Later while the other handmaids and I were getting the queen ready for bed, we gossiped about cute boys. Paikea teased me sooooooo hard.

I really liked that dream. It reminded me of chatting late into the night with Sarad and the other ad’ike at the morut. I had a thing for this Pantoran boy Chax back then but I never really did anything about it. It makes me kinda sad. I never really did anything about Park Boy either. I would give anything to tell Sarad about him.

I was back on Naboo. Paikea took me aside and said the Emperor was coming to stay for a month. I was worried for the little goblin baby. She said she would take care of it.

I was in a hangar bay. There was a human girl and a human man who looked to be my Papa’s age. They put the goblin baby on a Fondor haulcraft. I wanted to know where they were taking him, but they wouldn’t tell me. The old man just said it would be somewhere safe. I went onto the ship and found the baby. I took him out of his hoverpram and hugged him until Paikea touched my shoulder. I woke up feeling really sad.

I don’t know what to make of these dreams. In the second dream I felt like I was never going to see the goblin baby again. I know they’re just dreams, but I really like that little guy. Every time I dream about him it’s usually a good dream. I want to see Paikea again too. It’s just so nice to talk to another girl my age, even if it’s only a dream. I think maybe this dream wasn’t so nice because I’ve been so stressed lately with my Papa’s injury and moving out to this cottage in the middle of nowhere. Plus I’ve been sleeping in a bag on the floor instead of my bed back home so my sleep hasn’t been the best lately. I hope we get to move back to Pasir soon.

Notes:

"Paikea" is the name of Keisha Castle-Hughes' character in Whale Rider and my headcanon first name for Apailana (the same way Queen Amidala's first name is Padmé.) Makea and Isakea follow from that, the way Padmé's handmaidens' names all end in "é."
