Chapter Text
“Jimin, it’s not as if I don’t love you. Or that there’s anything… wrong with you. It’s just that… I found them. My soulmate. I can’t be with you anymore… No, I really did love you. I won’t deny that. But my soulmate…”
Jimin blearily opened his eyes, squinting into the sunlight that poured through the window next to his bed, the curtains already drawn. He glared up at the bunk above him, though he knew that it would be empty by now.
Shitty dream followed up by a shitty wake-up. Today was going to be grand, he just knew it.
With a small grunt, he rubbed his eyes and threw his legs over his bed, groaning in pain when he slammed his head onto the bunk above him in the process.
Rubbing the sore spot on his head, he muttered curses under his breath as he moved to the bathroom, ready to freshen up for the day.
He walked out with the toothbrush in mouth when the creak of the front door opening sounded. He scowled at the brunet before him, who, ignoring Jimin’s obvious foul mood, was flashing a blinding smile at him.
“Morning Jimin~” sang Taehyung, dropping the bags of grocery onto the table in the kitchen. “I see that you’re having a marvelous morning today!”
“Oh yeah,” Jimin mumbled, pulling the toothbrush out of his mouth. “Marvelous.”
He trudged back to the bathroom, ignoring Taehyung’s chatter about his and Jungkook’s date, because while he might have found it cute any other time, he just wasn’t in the mood to talk about his roommate and his soulmate’s date.
After cleaning his teeth and washing his face, he moved back to the kitchen, where Taehyung was singing obnoxiously while making coffee. He plopped into his chair, trying to calm the throbbing on his head. It became quiet as the scent of coffee wafted through their small apartment room, Taehyung now simply humming while placing a mug of coffee in front of Jimin and sipping his own as he sat down across from the smaller boy.
“… Had a dream?” Taehyung asked gently, eyes concerned despite his carefree tone. At Jimin’s grunt of affirmation, he took another sip of his coffee. “The same one?”
“Always the same one,” Jimin muttered, rubbing his temple as he took a mouthful of the bitter beverage. “It’s ridiculous. It’s been what, three years? And I’m still having that dream.”
Taehyung remained quiet at that. He nudged Jimin’s foot with his own under the table, playfully, but reassuringly at the same time. Jimin nudged back.
“You’ll find your soulmate someday,” Taehyung murmured, trapping one of Jimin’s bare feet between his socked ones. “Someday soon. I can feel it.”
Jimin snorted, pushing back at Taehyung’s feet. “How? It’s not like they’re your soulmate.”
“Best friend’s intuition.”
“That’s bull.”
“I’m so, deeply hurt by your lack of faith in me.”
They both began laughing, Jimin feeling a little lighter inside. They settled into a comfortable silence, only Taehyung’s quiet humming through the air.
Taehyung and Jungkook’s melody was lively; gentle, friendly, teasing. It was addicting, even to those who never really heard the depth of the melody. Jimin was sure that in the pair’s ears, the melody sounded many times more beautiful.
Jimin had yet to hear his own music. And even if he didn’t want to, he always felt a small pang of jealousy whenever Taehyung hummed the melody out loud like this.
He glanced at the clock, taking one last sip of the coffee. “We should get moving,” he muttered, standing up to go put the mug into the sink.
The humming stopped. “My class was canceled,” came Taehyung’s response as he rinsed out the mug. “I’m staying home all day today.”
“Lucky you,” Jimin muttered, ruffling Taehyung’s hair roughly when he passed by him to go change into something decent. Throwing on a black sweatshirt and a pair of old, worn out jeans with tears at the knees, throwing his writing utensils and other needed materials into his bag before slinging it over his shoulder.
“You have work today until evening, right?” Taehyung asked as Jimin began tying the laces to his sneakers.
“Yeah.”
“Mind if Jungkook and I hang out a bit here before you come home? Maybe we can have dinner together.”
Jimin waved his hand dismissively. “Do whatever you want,” he said. “Text me later on what you decide to do for dinner.”
“’Kay. Have fun in class!”
Jimin closed the door behind him, sighing up at the cloudless sky before pulling out his earbuds, stuffing them into his ears and turning on the music. He began walking, absently humming along.
Halfway through his journey, his shoulder collided heavily with someone else’s, attention preoccupied by the loud music blasting in his ears and the small pebbles rolling on the ground. Jimin’s head jerked up in surprise, hand going up to immediately pull out his earbud, an apology ready at the tip of his tongue.
His mouth went dry at the sight before him.
A group of four guys, all of them looking more or less positively intimidating, stared at him, the brunet whom he had bumped into looking confused and mildly offended. The other three were quick to go back to whatever conversation they were having as the offended brunet narrowed his eyes at Jimin.
Jimin swallowed nervously.
“I’m sorry,” Jimin murmured out. He wasn’t scare, per se; rather, he was sure he could take on a guy one-to-one, but four-to-one… That could be a little difficult.
His body got more and more tense as the brunet before him seemed to study him, scanning him from head to toe. Then the hooded gaze moved to Jimin’s face, lingered for a bit, before a small smirk broke out on the guy’s face.
“Watch it next time, shortie.”
Needless to say, Jimin was the one who was offended this time around.
“Shortie??”
The brunet snorted, opening his mouth to say something before the tallest blond called out “Hoseok!”
Flashing one last smug smile at Jimin, the brunet—Hoseok—moved away, rejoining the group. Jimin scowled after them, rolling his eyes before jamming the earbud back into his ear, moving quickly to his class.
A marvelous morning, indeed.
