Chapter Text

The battlefield is quiet in a way that feels wrong.

Smoke curls into the sky above the broken ruins of the compound. The air still smells like metal, ash, and lightning. For a moment, no one speaks. No one moves.

Because everyone is looking at him.

Tony.

Tony Stark lies on the ground, the glow from the stones fading in the gauntlet around his hand. His chest barely moves. His eyes are fixed somewhere far away.

And beside him—

Steve Rogers.

Steve doesn’t realise he’s shaking at first.

His shield lies several feet away, half buried in dirt. His suit is shredded. Blood runs down his side in a slow, steady line, soaking the blue fabric darker and darker.

But he doesn’t feel it yet.

All he sees is Tony.

Peter drops first.

Then Rhodey.

Then Sam.

One by one the heroes gather around them—an unspoken understanding passing through the group like a ripple in water. Slowly, silently, they begin to lower themselves to one knee.

A gesture of respect.

Of grief.

Of honour.

Steve watches it happen like he’s underwater.

Clint kneels.

T’Challa kneels.

Strange bows his head.

Even Thor lowers himself heavily to the ground.

The world feels distant. Muffled.

Steve takes a breath and tries to move closer to Tony—

And that’s when it hits him.

Pain.

White-hot and sudden.

His vision blurs as his body finally remembers everything it’s been through.

The punches from Thanos.

The broken ribs.

The crushed shoulder.

The deep cut across his abdomen.

His legs buckle before he even realises he’s trying to kneel.

Steve drops hard.

Not the controlled, respectful kneel the others manage.

He just… collapses.

His injured knee slams into the rubble and his hand shoots out to catch himself, fingers digging into the dirt. The movement tears something in his side and a strangled breath escapes him.

For a second he can’t move.

Can’t breathe.

The pain roars through him like a wave.

Someone says his name.

“Cap—”

But Steve barely hears it.

Because Tony’s eyes shift.

Just slightly.

And they land on him.

Steve forces himself upright, even though every movement feels like glass in his bones. He drags one knee under him, forcing himself into the same position as the others.

A kneel.

For Tony.

His hands are shaking now. Blood drips from his fingertips into the dirt.

Tony lets out a faint, broken breath that might have been a laugh once.

“…You look… worse than me…”

Steve huffs a quiet, disbelieving sound that hurts his ribs.

“Not possible.”

Tony’s gaze flickers over him — the blood, the way Steve’s body sways slightly as he tries to stay upright.

“You… finally learn… when to quit?”

Steve’s throat tightens.

“No.”

A pause.

Then softer.

“…You didn’t.”

Tony’s eyes soften.

Around them, the entire battlefield remains silent.

Dozens of heroes kneeling.

Watching.

Waiting.

Steve’s vision swims again. He presses a hand to his side, feeling warm blood soaking through his suit. His body is starting to sag, the adrenaline finally draining away.

He knows he shouldn’t move.

Knows if he falls again he might not get back up.

But he leans closer anyway.

Because Tony’s breathing is getting slower.

Steve lowers his head slightly.

For a moment, the super soldier who stood against armies, aliens, and gods looks utterly exhausted.

“…You did it, Tony,” he says quietly.

Tony’s eyes flicker one last time.

A faint smile touches his lips.

And then—

Nothing.

The silence that follows is heavier than any battle.

Steve’s head bows.

Around him, the heroes remain kneeling.

But Steve’s body finally gives out.

The strength drains from his arms and he tips sideways, catching himself just barely before hitting the ground.

A hand grabs his shoulder.

Sam.

“Cap—hey—stay with me.”

Steve tries to answer but the words blur together. The pain is everywhere now. His vision tunnels.

The last thing he sees before everything fades is the circle of heroes still kneeling around Tony.

And for the first time since the fight started—

Steve Rogers lets himself fall.

————

Steve doesn’t remember falling.

One moment the battlefield is there — smoke, broken earth, heroes kneeling around Tony Stark — and the next the ground is rushing up toward him.

Strong hands catch him before his face hits the dirt.

“Whoa—Cap!”

The voice is familiar.

Sam Wilson.

Steve’s vision swims as Sam lowers him carefully onto the rubble. The movement sends a sharp bolt of pain through his ribs and he sucks in a broken breath.

“Easy,” Sam mutters, panic creeping into his voice. “Easy, man…”

Blood is spreading quickly beneath Steve now, soaking into the cracked ground.

Someone else kneels beside them.

Bucky Barnes.

Bucky’s metal hand presses gently but firmly against Steve’s side.

“…That’s a lot of blood,” he says quietly.

Steve tries to laugh.

It comes out as a rough cough.

“I’ve… had worse.”

“Not today you haven’t,” Bucky mutters.

Across the battlefield, the others are still gathered around Tony. Some are crying. Some stand frozen. Some still kneel.

Thor stares down at Tony like the world has just shifted under his feet.

Peter Parker is sobbing quietly.

And Steve… Steve is trying very hard to stay awake.

But the world is dimming.

“Cap.” Sam’s voice cuts through the haze. “Hey, stay with me.”

Steve blinks slowly.

“…M’good.”

He’s not.

Bucky’s eyes flick over Steve’s injuries quickly, the way a soldier assesses a battlefield.

Broken ribs.

Dislocated shoulder.

Deep abdominal cut.

Bruising already spreading across his chest from where Thanos nearly crushed him earlier.

Bucky looks up.

“MEDIC!”

The shout echoes across the wreckage.

Bruce Banner immediately starts moving toward them, still cradling his damaged arm from the gauntlet.

“Steve?” Bruce says urgently, dropping to his knees beside him.

Steve turns his head slightly.

“…Hey, Doc.”

Bruce’s eyes widen at the amount of blood.

“Jesus, Steve—how long have you been bleeding like this?”

Steve squints up at the sky like he’s trying to think about it.

“…Since… about three battles ago.”

Sam groans.

“That is not funny right now.”

Steve tries to shrug.

Bad idea.

His body jerks as pain rips through his side and he grips Sam’s arm tightly.

The movement finally makes the truth unavoidable.

Steve Rogers is badly hurt.

Bad enough that even the serum isn’t keeping up.

Bruce presses his hand carefully against Steve’s side wound.

“We need to get him inside now.”

Bucky shakes his head slightly.

“…He’s not gonna make the walk.”

Steve hears that.

His eyes flutter open again.

“I can—”

He tries to sit up.

His entire body immediately rebels.

The world tilts violently and he nearly blacks out again before Bucky pushes him back down.

“Absolutely not,” Bucky snaps.

Steve frowns faintly.

“…Bossy.”

Bucky leans closer, voice low and rough.

“You’re dying, punk. Let me have this one.”

For a second Steve just stares at him.

Then he sighs softly.

“…Fine.”

Across the battlefield, a shadow suddenly falls over them.

Heavy footsteps approach.

Thor kneels beside them, his expression hollow but determined.

“I will carry him.”

Sam looks relieved immediately.

“Yes. Yes you will.”

Thor carefully slides one massive arm beneath Steve’s shoulders and another beneath his legs.

Even that small movement makes Steve gasp.

“…Easy,” Thor says quietly.

The God of Thunder stands slowly, lifting Steve like he weighs nothing.

Steve’s head lolls slightly against Thor’s shoulder.

The sky spins above him.

As Thor starts carrying him toward the remaining med tents, Steve’s eyes drift back to where Tony still lies surrounded by heroes.

His voice is barely a whisper.

“…He saved us.”

Thor nods once.

“He did.”

Steve watches the scene fade into the distance.

His eyelids grow heavier.

Sam walks quickly beside them.

“Don’t you dare pass out now, Cap.”

Steve manages a faint smirk.

“…You’re… not my nurse.”

Bucky walks on the other side, jaw tight.

“…Just stay awake.”

Steve tries.

He really does.

But the last battle.

The blood loss.

The exhaustion.

It all crashes down at once.

His eyes finally slide closed as Thor carries him away from the battlefield.

And the last thought in Steve’s mind is simple.

Tony won.
