Breathing Freedom and Fire

Summary:

Being the younger sibling to Natsu Dragneel is difficult. But not as difficult as trying to understand an entirely different world. A magic spell gone wrong, an ocean wanting to suck you down and kill you, and a crew eager for you to join. It's an adventure to say the least.

But why does everyone think you killed a guy? Some Fire Fist Ace? You just got here!

Notes:

I know, another fanfic by me. But what can I say, I have an idea I need to write it down.

Chapter 1: A Fire Punch does not Fix Everything

Chapter Text

"Hey idiot!" I shout at the dark mage, fingers itching to set them ablaze and get rid of their stupid hood. 'Cause I liked fighting my opponents while seeing their face, letting them know I saw them and they saw me….beating their butt that is. "Get better aim!"

The dark mage hisses in annoyance, turning his magic on me to blast once more. But I've already vaulted through the tight space of the chamber, giggling happily as fire trails from my feat.

Flipping mid stride, I dodge the next incoming blast by the skin of my teeth. Feel the crackle of magic gone bad as it pasts, and it bursts like a balloon as it strikes the stone pillar behind.

Landing in the middle of the room, I cackle, facing the dark mage again as I scuff up the poorly drawn sigils on the brick floor. "Is that really all you got? Man, and I thought this mission was hard." I groan, throwing my head back.

Bet Natsu's having a great time on his quest. The grumbled thought is halfhearted at best, just angry he chose to leave me behind without asking if I even wanted to join. But he was never good I remembering to ask in the first place, so really who was to blame.

Maybe Happy?

Or I could get on Lucy since my brother loved to stick around the girl so much. Natsu definitely had a crush, not that his thick skull would understand it even if I told him about it.

Nah, I better not blame her. Lucy would kick me out before I could even speak.

The thought sours the edges of my growing hunger. Something that I had forgotten about in the heat of the moment but was now rearing back that the fight turned out to be a bust. I better find a restaurant or firepit after this. The thought of eating any fire enticing as always had the hunger coming back tenfold.

A scoff from the dark mage had me perking up again. Pinning the cloaked man with a snarl and glare, he began to tremble in his spot.

"Got something to say punk?"

The dark mage jolts, you grin as he begins to shake but it falls just as quickly when he begins to laugh instead.

"You fool! Walking into my trap! And they said the Fairy Tail Guild was impossible to fight." The dark mage's taunts grate on my nerves, worsening as he points at my feet. "You're gonna be in a world of pain as I suck the magic from your very being! Soon, I'll be a Dragon Slayer and you'll be nothing!"

"You done talking?" I ask, folding my arms over my chest.

The dark mage pauses, mimicking my movement. "What?"

"Great!" I don't wait for them to come to, sticking my fingers in my mouth and whistling. A whoosh of feathers fills the air and as white fills my vision, a voice cries out in delight,

"I missed you!" Little fury arms wrap around my face and I grin again.

"Wonder! Ready for some action?" I ask the Exceed, the one companion who's been with me since I was a child.

The little, calico furball backs off, paws wringing together in worry. "Oh, me, uh….I don't know?"

I laugh, waving it off. "Doesn't matter, just get us out of here."

"The fight is finished?"

"Will be."

"Will not!" Shouted the dark mage as they raise their hands up. They begin to chant, the magic circle lighting up in response.

I leap back, snarling at the glow spreads to my legs. "Wonder, a lift." I ask.

The Exceed jumps into action, paws grabbing the back of my shirt and beginning to lift. But the dark magic isn't letting us go. The ground warping, caving in as dust kicks up. The dark mage doesn't stop chanting, in fact, they are chanting louder at the show of power.

Wonder flaps her wings harder, trying to get free of the drag that has started to pull.

"Uh, Wonder?"

"I'm sorry. It's just…too…strong…" Wonder groans.

"Fine, I'll just punch it!"

Wonder's paws slip on my back for a second, then tighten. "What? Wait, no-"

Her plea drones into silence as I charge my magic up, the fire moving and magic igniting as it reaches my fist. An attack that both me and my brother love to use screaming from my lungs. "Fire Dragon's Iron Fist!" I push down, fire blazing, Wonder has no chance to stop me.

The circle of dark magic glows, blue bursting up to meet me. Clouds of white swirling into being, and an even darker blue sloshing before my eyes. Not that it matters as my fist meets stone and it explodes….

Huh?

The world is shifting my attack pushes through the stone and out into fresh air. Salty and fishy all in one as clouds surge up around me.

My fist is still on fire and Wonder is screaming somewhere behind me. But the sudden gale is pushing it away, further and further.

The water is getting dangerously close.

Am I falling? I realize to late. The fire goes out, I swing my arms about, head tipping up where a rip in the sky is. Wonder is diving towards me, her yellow eyes wide in panic. And beyond her a dark mage who's manic grin sears its way into my brain.

A growl tears through my throat, one last shout as the gape is closing in, healing over. "You coward! I'm gonna make you pay!"

I'm gonna find that bastard…

The rift closes and I face the current problem with renewed anger. I'm still falling. I can control my descent, but if there's nowhere to land there's no point. So, I search using my enhanced sight.

No.

No.

No.

No-wait, there!

A boat rocks against the waves, the head of a ram staring out at its head. I'll land there!

"Fire Dragon's Iron Fist Booster!" I shout, igniting both my hands, but this time I gather them into the palms and throw them behind me. With a flex of my fingers, and surge of magic, the fire sends me flying forward.

Speeding along the sky, right towards the boat. Faces are peering up, a man with green hair, one with blond and funny eyebrows, a girl with orange curls. There's another boy with a layout of objects set before him, a girl with black hair and sharp eyes. And the last I spot is a small deer who's waving his hooves about.

Their faces are full of shock, panic taking over the closer I get.

I have a second too late to realize why. Wait, I'm going too fast-

I hit the deck, wood caving beneath my feet as the world goes dark.
