Work Text:
While buying sandwiches, Nile looked at something on her phone.
Nile: "If it is okay with you, I want to follow a hunch I got."
Joe: "Go ahead. Do you need our help?"
Nile: "Nah, I got this. See you back at the safe house tonight."
When Joe got back to Booker, he was trying to get the drone flying again after it had hit a wall.
Booker: "Where is Nile?"
Joe handed Booker a sandwich.
Joe: "She is following a hunch she got. It is good practice for her."
Booker nodded.
Joe: "And you are sure you cannot get into the laptop without the thumb drive?"
They had stolen the laptop three weeks ago.
Booker: "Yes, I need the thumb drive to unlock the laptop. See it as a key to a door."
Joe: "That much I do get, but can you not hack the laptop or something?"
Booker: "If I do that, all the information we need to shut down the weapon smuggler's operations will be lost. And if that happens, you can make the call to Andy and tell her that all the work she and Nicky have been doing has been in vain."
Joe: "I prefer to keep on breathing."
Booker chuckled before eating the rest of his sandwich.
Booker: "You drive, and I will see if I can get the drone to fly again."
When Joe and Booker returned to the safe house, they heard Nile in the kitchen.
Joe: "Okay, where did you get the cute fluffy hairball from?"
Nile was feeding a white Pomeranian with chicken.
Nile: "The cute fluffy hairball, as you call her, is actually the hunch I got earlier today. And her name is Minnie."
Joe: "I don't follow. Do you, Book?"
Booker shook his head and took a beer from the fridge.
Nile: "I noticed something strange on all the photos we have been taking of the weapon smuggler and his men."
Joe took the beer Booker offered him.
Booker: "And that strange thing was?"
Nile: "Minnie. Try taking a look at the photos and see what I saw."
While Joe and Booker looked at the photos, Nile offered Minnie more chicken, which the dog ate.
Joe: "That is a lot of protection for one small dog."
Nile: "That was what I was thinking. Either the weapon smuggler loves his dog very much, or else there is another reason for having five big men guarding a 3-pound dog, so I decided to borrow Minnie to see what all the fuss was about."
Booker: "When you say borrow, do you mean you kidnapped the dog?"
Nile: "No, I rescued a dog that was wandering around on its own in the park."
Joe: "What do you mean?"
Nile: "The only time the five men didn't look at the dog was when it was peeing. So, when the dog walked past me, I picked her up and took her home with me, just until I can find her owner."
Joe chuckled.
Joe: "Clever idea, Nile. So, did you find out why the dog has so much protection?"
Nile: "I did, yes."
Nile took the dog's collar off and handed it to Booker.
Nile: "I believe this is the thumb drive you have been searching for."
Booker: "Incredible. Nile, I owe you big for this."
Nile: "I will remember that."
Booker almost ran out of the kitchen with the thumb drive.
Joe: "And what is your plan with the cute fluffy hairball?"
Nile: "I will put her into witness protection, because there is no way in hell Minnie is going back to that guy."
Joe: "Great idea. You do that, and I will help Booker so we can get this mission done."
Nile: "Is that your way of saying you are missing Andy?"
Joe: "Also her, and she will get a hug when she gets home, but..."
Nile covered the dog's ears.
Nile: "Joe, there are children in the kitchen. Come, Minnie, let's find you a new loving family who will feed you chicken and play with you all day long. Or do you want to live with a sweet lady, who will spoil you?"
Nile picked up the dog and carried her towards her room, while Joe helped Booker the best he could.
