They Are My Boys

Summary:

With Caleb it was nearly instant. He needed someone to watch over him, and she needed someone to watch over. With Essek it was a slow, subtle change, and it surprised her as much as it surprised him.

A collection of short stories exploring the relationship between Veth and the wizards.

Notes:

This was not the first story I thought I would post, but this idea popped into my head while I was writing a much longer series.

Chapter 1: To Care For

Chapter Text

Ever since Nott said that she saw Caleb as her son, Jester has been watching them. Not in a creepy way! But she was still paying attention.

They were on a job that they had gotten from The Gentleman and had just set up camp off the road just a bit. They had finished their meal, a simple stew made with some of the perishable ingredients they bought in Zadash, and were settling in for the night. The stew was okay, but definitely not as good as the meals she had back home. A lot of things were like that.

Don't get her wrong, she was enjoying the adventure. She didn't get to do all of the things she did now back home. Nor see all the places she's seen. She had also met all kinds of new people and had so many stories to tell her mom.

But the food wasn't as good as the food back home. Her sleeping bag was nowhere close to as comfortable as her bed. And even though she loved her sketchbook, she missed her walls, her canvases, the bar chairs she painted hidden dicks on … all of the things she painted on back home. But most of all, she missed her mom - The way she would always compliment her art work, the stories she would tell when they had a night together, the way she would tuck her in late at night after she got back from a client, when she thought that Jester was fast asleep. She just missed everything about her.

Oh! Thinking of moms… she turned her attention to where Nott and Caleb were. They always set up their spaces next to each other with just a bit of distance from the rest of the group. Caleb was currently asleep, laying directly on the ground - and why he would do that instead of just buying a sleeping bag still confused her - with his coat laid over him like a blanket. They had some extra blankets between all of them, but for some reason Caleb was reluctant to use them. Which was stupid, especially on nights like this where the air was freezing. She didn't really mind of course, but she could see how the others began to shiver slightly and bundle themselves up.

Nott was next to him, pulling one of the extra blankets onto the sleeping human, like she was tucking him in. She repressed the sudden urge to squeal as she smacked at Fjord and Molly with one hand and pointed toward the adorable scene she was watching.

“Jester, what…?” Fjord mumbled next to her as he came out of dozing off.

“Well, would you look at that,” Molly said quietly with a smile. “She really is like a mother…”

“I know right!” Jester said in a whisper shout. “And I don't want to make it a big deal or anything, ‘cause I don't want to embarrass them. But that is so sweet!”

Molly gave a short laugh, “Well good for them. Last thing we need is a wizard shaped ice sculpture.”

Fjord sighed and laid back down, seemingly less amused by Nott's mothering. “Jester, why don't we give them some privacy and try to get sleep?”

“Okaaay, Fjord. Geez I just thought it was cute”, she said light heartedly. Then she laid down too, with thoughts of her own mother. She fell asleep with a smile on her face.
