Work Text:

There is one thing that Yuuta makes an effort to be sure that you know, and that is that you can always come to him.

The two of you bonded early on, with him being the reason that you ended up at Jujutsu Tech to begin with - and wasn’t that a long story? But he was quite easily your closest friend there. Then, he went abroad.

You couldn’t hold it against him, of course not, you knew the situation was complicated. Of course, at the same time, you did miss him. A lot. It was hard not to. Not so long ago you’d been together every day of the week, for almost every hour that wasn’t spent sleeping. Now you hardly even get to text, because of the significant time difference between you. You still had Maki, Toge and Panda, and they’re great friends - they’re just not Yuuta. Nobody really could be. The first years were sweet, Yuuji reminded you oddly of Yuuta, and it was a comforting presence sometimes.

Sometimes, things just got to be a lot. Being a sorcerer wasn’t easy and you were struggling to adjust more than Yuuta had, everyone did their best to help where they could but sometimes you didn’t need someone to fix it, you just needed someone to get it. The others? They didn’t get it. How could they? The only current student that hadn’t come from a sorcerer family was Yuuji, and he had his own stuff going on, he’d found a way to adjust. It was hard not to feel alone at the best of times.

Those were the times that you’d cave, and call Yuuta.

He said you could call any time, but you tried to avoid it as much as possible - he was busy, you’d hate to interrupt that. But that didn’t change the fact that you wanted to call him daily, that you wished he was still here right beside you. A phone call every now and then just helped to ease the ache.

“Hey, Yuuta.” You softly greeted as he answered the call, the knot in your chest already loosening, just knowing he was on the other end of the line.
“Hey, you okay?” He immediately replied, because he knew your habit by now. You called only when you needed him most, and not a moment before, no matter how much he insisted on you calling sooner, before you were left right at the brink.
“Yeah, just missing you.” It was easy to admit it, because you knew that he knew. You both did. You missed each other, and there was no reason to be ashamed of that, no sense in pretending anything else. Neither of you cared to lie to or pretend with each other. There was a thud and a grunt on the other side of the line that gave you pause. Was Yuuta exorcising a curse?

“Yeah, I miss you too.” He replied after a beat, sounding slightly more out of breath than he had just a minute ago.
“Sorry, am I bothering you? I can call back another ti-”
“You could never, don’t be silly. Talk to me, angel.” Yuuta insisted, words cutting like his own trusty blade right through your nerves and insecurities, as they always did. And for just a moment, you were almost glad that he wasn’t right there beside you, because otherwise he would’ve been able to see the flush on your cheeks that was a dead giveaway for just how that little pet name made you feel. The fluttering in your chest was a familiar one, the swoop in your stomach that made you just a little giddy. That was one thing Yuuta didn’t need to know.

So you talked. It was almost like being on a mission with him, you supposed. You told him what had been going on recently, told him about your own progress, and in turn he told you stories of things he’d been up to recently and the progress he was making in his work abroad. It was nice, it made everything feel just that little bit easier. Made you feel lighter.

“You sound like you’re feeling better already.” Yuuta commented as you laughed softly at a story you were calling from a week or two prior. You couldn’t help rolling your eyes, even as a fond smile settled on your lips.
“You have that effect.” You replied, shrugging even if he couldn’t see it. Yuuta’s soft responding laugh made your heart skip. You might be just a little doomed.

For a while after that, there was just quiet. Breathing in sync as Yuuta headed back to his accomodation, and you sat in your bed, chin rested on your knees. It wasn’t the same as having him there beside you, able to really feel his breaths and hear the beat of his heart when he gave you a tight hug - but it was enough. For now.

“You didn’t really think I’d ask you to hang up, did you?” Yuuta asked as you heard the jingling of keys, presumably him letting himself back into his accomodation.
“Well, maybe if you were busy?” You replied, scratching awkwardly at the back of your neck. Yuuta didn’t reply immediately, you heard shuffling fabric and did your best not to imagine him changing out of the clothes he’d been wearing, and into something more comfortable. Or maybe nothing at all.

“I know I tell you all the time that you can tell me anything, but I do mean it,” Yuuta finally began, making your attention suddenly refocus, “seriously. I.. I hope you never doubt how I feel about you. You’re my favourite boy, I’d never send you away if you needed me. Ever.” You could hear it in his voice, how determined he was. Yuuta’s loyalty was something you knew couldn’t be shaken.
“I know that.” You softly replied.
“Then never ask me that again. Don’t you dare. I’d rather put my own sword through my chest than leave you hanging, angel.”
