A Day(te) Around Vivid Street

Summary:

Early on in Kohane and An's partnership, An decided to take Kohane out on a day around Vivid Street. To Kohane, the place was still familiar and all she knew was rumors of it being a wild place, so An wanted to show her just how friendly and welcoming it could be.

And Kohane hoped to god that the entire time they told the story of the day - brought all those memories back of intimacy and sweet words to the forefront - that the paint was covering up just how much she was blushing.

(Based on March 2026 Fandom-Free Bingo prompts; and late Kohane birthday fic.)

Notes:

Based on the March 2026 Fandom-Free Bingo:
- "You look like a cotton candy machine threw up on you."
- Doing One Another's Nails / Make-Up
- "You like pink, right?"
- Decorating Baked Goods
- Finger Painting Together
- Face Painting
- Blushing

This is a late Kohane birthday thing; and given she's a March birthday, that's why I used the March prompts.

Work Text:

Early on in Kohane and An's partnership, An decided to take Kohane out on a day around Vivid Street. To Kohane, the place was still familiar and all she knew was rumors of it being a wild place, so An wanted to show her just how friendly and welcoming it could be.

By the time they came back that evening, they were covered head to toe in new colors.

"What the-?!" Akito was the first to blurt out, as his, Toya's, and Ken's eyes bulged. "You look like a cotton candy machine threw up on you."

"It's paint, actually," An replied.

"I'm guessing not face paint?" Ken asked, shooting a glance at the splotches on their clothes and limbs.

"Yeah. There was an art project happening across the street."

"Instead of graffiti cans, people were allowed to finger paint on the wall," Kohane added, still beaming in excitement. It wasn't the kind of activity she'd encounter in the parts of town she frequented, so she was still high on the thrill of it - but maybe more importantly, of how it went between her and An.

As they would go on and share with the guys: they'd started their day going over to a salon to do each other's make-up and nails. An thought it'd be a good way to bond as a duo and get to know each other more - having to pick out colors that went with each other's style and guess each other's favorite colors.

"You like pink, right?" An had asked, pointing to the pink packet that Kohane had started to wear on the regular.

"It's a nice color," Kohane replied back with a smile, trying very hard not to notice how it tickled when An brushed the pink nail polish onto her.

After that, they headed to a bakery to eat. But once the owner learned of An's plans to show Kohane the true spirit of Vivid Street, they suddenly found themselves in the back with the rare opportunity of getting to decorate their own desserts.

"Ah, you got a little something on you," was the warning Kohane got before she suddenly felt a finger tap her nose. Yet Kohane felt food on her face after the action.

At her surprised look, An continued with a cheeky grin, "Sorry, I guess I misunderstood the assignment."

In their retelling, Kohane neglected to go into that much detail on that part, nervous that the guys would pick up what she had - that it had been An's disguised attempt of calling Kohane a "sweet thing".

As for where all the paint came from, they'd come across that open art project as they walked up and down the street. Kohanae was in awe of not just the concept of it, but just how many people were pitching in. Not only were there young adults and teens, but even little kids leaving behind hand prints and the elderly carefully balancing themselves on the walls as they left their own mark.

"Come on, we should draw something too!" An suggested, grabbing Kohane's hand in the process.

Yet Kohane didn't immediately move her feet. "Is it really okay...?"

"Yeah, it's what-"

"No, not the painting," Kohane quickly clarified. "I mean... Is it okay for me...? I haven't been here that long..."

"You could've showed up just yesterday, and I'd still think you could join in. This is a community, and if you wanna be part of it, Kohane, then you are."

Her heart fluttered as they walked over to the wall - but not as much as when they decided to copy some of the kids around them and paint each other's faces. Kohane fought to stay still as An drew a hamster on her cheek and fought to keep her hands steady as she drew stars and hearts on An's.

And Kohane hoped to god that the entire time they told the story of the day - brought all those memories back of intimacy and sweet words to the forefront - that the paint was covering up just how much she was blushing.

Notes:

This ended up slightly different from what I was picturing in my head as I picked the prompts. Well, maybe only regarding the blushing part - I originally imagined slipping that in as something happening as they were face painting, but it ended up being in a different place in the fic.

So, uh, sickeningly sweet fluffy covert flirting and pining AnHane, everybody. Originally the fic was going to be following them as the day went on, but when I started writing I pivoted to starting at the end of the day and having them recollect / retell / reflect on it, since that felt like a more natural start to something that was supposed to be short and technically a bunch of prompt fills in a trenchcoat. Hope this doesn't feel too stilted due to that.

I tried to figure out if Kohane's favorite color was pink or something else while writing (because of the dialogue prompt mentioning liking pink), but that's surprisingly not easy information to find. I wish there was a place where people just obsessively list out all the small character details that have been dropped in dialogue across the hundreds of event stories, card stories, and area conversations. The wiki sometimes has that, but mainly for relationships between characters, at least from what I've seen.

Also it’s been a hot minute since I read the early stories; this was inspired by my vivid memory of the Toya1 event set-up being that someone Kohane knew saw her walking into a livehouse and told her parents who got scared because they didn’t know what Vivid Street truly was like. I think I vaguely remember Kohane starting out intimidated by Vivid Street in the Main Story, too, but I can’t remember if it was because of bad rumors or if it was just an unfamiliar place.
