Dennis hummed softly as he sat at Robby’s work station after the amputation patient to try and grab a bite to eat before someone pulled him into another patient. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair as he looked around the very chaotic ER that was still without internet and digital systems, this shift had been one of the longest shifts of his life and that Park the Shark guy did not help. He knew who Park was, they had met when Dennis was on his surgery rotation and it was the first time someone older than forty had flirted with him. He didn’t like Park though despite the flirting during his rotation Park was a fucking asshole, he was the most insufferable human that Dennis had ever met so he never reciprocated Park’s advances and he never told anyone about it, not until he moved in with Trinity.
She was the first to know because she was currently in a situationship thing with Garcia who worked in surgery with this Park the Shark dude, so he knew sooner or later it might get mentioned that Park used to flirt with him, maybe Park didn’t tell people it was Dennis specifically but he had overheard Park mention once or twice to a couple people how he got rejected again by a med student. Trinity had made sure that Dennis was actually okay before noting to never bring it up, even when Robby and Jack clearly wanted to know if Dennis was into older guys she made sure not mention it at all and stay as nonchalant as possible about what Dennis liked. It wasn’t her place to say, she just wanted to make sure Dennis was actually loved.
Then came the amputation patient, the one where they had to call down an orthopedic surgeon consultant and who showed up? Park the Shark. He was still as much of an ass as he was when he was flirting with Dennis during the man’s surgery rotation and it was honestly annoying, Dennis could look after himself he is a Nebraska raised farm boy and if he needed to he could throw a good punch. If it wouldn’t land him in trouble for punching a senior member of staff he probably would’ve punched Park already and told him to fuck off, but violence in the workplace when he has no physical evidence of the flirting probably wouldn’t go down well with Gloria in HR or with anyone really.
The look he gave Dennis when he asked about the 3 litres and acted as if he was stupid not knowing he meant saline, honestly it was a shame that this guy’s flirting is the reason Dennis knows he’s attracted to older men, just not Park. If it wasn’t for Robby being in the room and giving him such a sweet and encouraging smile then maybe Dennis actually would’ve punched him, he knows Trinity would love to see him punch somebody at work but instead they finished with the patients and he went to eat at Robby’s work station.
Dennis brushed the crumbs off of the desk and into his hand so he could brush them off into the trash, he felt a hand on the back of the chair while he wasn’t looking and assumed it was Robby.
“Sorry, Dr. Robby, I’m done eating if you want your work station ba-”
He immediately stopped when he saw Park standing there. “Are you free tonight, pretty boy?” Park asked with a smile that made Dennis want to throw up.
Trinity looked over at Dennis and saw Park before quickly looking around for Robby or Jack or anyone. She saw Jack walking in and immediately waved him down, when Jack looked over and saw Park leaning over Dennis he felt his blood boiling. Mainly because Dennis looked very uncomfortable but also because that was his and Robby’s boy, no one else’s and he’ll be damned if he let any other older man ask Dennis out first.
Dennis was about to tell Park to fuck off when Jack suddenly grabbed the back of the chair and pulled Dennis close to him, he immediately placed his dog tags around Dennis’ neck. “Everything okay over here, baby?” Jack asked while staring down Park.
The entire scene had caught most people’s attention and even Robby was watching with a concerned face because he had seen Jack jealous, he had seen the man angry and pissed and all sorts of other emotions but this looked like Jack was about to actually hurt Park. He glanced at Dennis underneath Jack who was blushing and playing with the dog tags while also looking really relieved that Jack had come to his rescue.
“Oh I see how it is, you think you’re too good for me, huh? Decided to go and shack up with the night shift?” Park asked as he crossed his arms over his chest. “I expected more from you, pretty boy.”
Jack stepped forward and grabbed Park by the shirt immediately making Robby and Dana move from their viewing points. “If you touch my boyfriend again, Shark, I swear to god.” Jack was now not only extremely jealous of the fact that Park tried to flirt with Dennis, but he was now equally pissed that Park thought he had some superiority over Dennis just because he met Dennis first and trained him first.
Park glared at Jack. “Last I heard he was single, unless you managed to bag him in the last five minutes which isn’t substantial enough to be a serious relationship.”
Robby gently grabbed Jack and pulled him away from Park, practically ripping Park’s scrubs out of Jack’s hand because the man was so angry at this prick who made Dennis uncomfortable. He carefully moved in front of Jack and looked at Park.
“Thanks for coming to my rescue, Dr. Robby, now if I can just-”
“Park. Get your ass out of my ER before you end up in a patient bed.” Robby warned as Jack stood behind Robby and glared as if his eyes were going to shoot bullets at Park any minute.
Park glanced between the both of them before he walked away, Dana stood next to Dennis with a hand on his shoulder and looked at the ER who had all stopped. “Hey, no time for breaks, get back to work! This is a personal matter!”
Everyone quickly hurried off back to whatever they had been doing beforehand, Dennis carefully held the dog tags that were now around his neck in his hand and ran his thumb across the cold metal softly. He looked at Robby who was trying to calm Jack down.
“Okay I really thought Huckleberry might’ve been the first one to punch Park’s lights out.” Trinity said as she also stood next to Dennis and looked at him. “You okay, huckleberry?”
Dennis didn’t say anything, he just got up and went to the stairwell, Robby and Jack looked at each other before they followed him since they knew Dennis was probably going up to the roof. The young doctor had made his way to the roof and he was just standing by the railing and looking at the dog tags on his neck, when Jack and Robby got there they wasted no time in walking over to him.
“Dennis? You okay? I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable.” Jack said as he watched him and waited for a reaction of any sort.
There was nothing for a moment but then Dennis pulled Jack into a kiss, it was fast and a little shocking at first but Jack melted into it and pulled Dennis closer. The kiss was filled with love and also so much gratitude for Jack finally getting that man away from him. Robby watched them for a moment because yes this was what he wanted and he was glad that he and Jack were finally able to talk to Dennis, but also this whole situation was going to be a HR nightmare and he just hoped that neither Jack or Dennis got into trouble for it.
Jack slowly pulled away from the kiss and looked at Dennis before he looked at Robby. “Robby?”
“Sorry I uh-I want a kiss as well, but I’m also very worried about what Gloria’s going to do about this.” Robby said as he rubbed his face a little before he moved closer to Dennis. “Just-are you okay? Like are you okay?”
Dennis gently placed his hands on Robby’s cheeks and nodded. “I’m okay, Robby, I promise.” Dennis whispered before he leaned in and kissed Robby softly.
Robby hummed as he kissed back and leaned into it, this kiss was Dennis letting Robby know that he was okay and that whatever Park’s plan was with the flirting it hadn’t hurt Dennis. Jack smiled softly as he watched Robby relax and the fact that Dennis felt the same was a relief, he took a huge risk with his dog tags and calling Dennis his boyfriend like that.
“Okay so um…do we go back to work now?” Dennis asked as he looked at the two of them once his kiss with Robby had ended.
“There’s still a few hours of your shift left, but I’m going to get a nap in my car.” Jack replied before he heard his phone buzz. He took it out and saw a HR email, “actually I’m going to HR.”
Robby sighed and just gently placed a hand on Dennis’ arm. “Come on, we’ll finish our shift and then deal with everything that happened okay?”
Dennis nodded and went back into the hospital with the two of them, Jack went off to HR while he and Robby went back down to the ER to continue helping patients. The hours felt like they were going slower after everything had happened and it was torture, especially since a lot of people kept glancing at him constantly and kept saying how they didn’t know he was dating Jack and Robby. It was a very tough rest of the shift but eventually it was over and Dennis stood in the locker room staring at his hands, he still had Jack’s dog tags on and he was just reading the details on them over and over again.
He felt a hand on his shoulder and turned to see Jack standing there, a soft smile on his face as he realised Dennis was still focused on the dog tags. “I’m fine, by the way, I’ll still be your hot boss at work.” Jack said.
Dennis breathed a sigh of relief and smiled as Jack kissed his head softly. “So I guess Robby and I will see you in the morning when you get back from work.” Dennis said.
“You will, they’ve also given us the next few days off to let the situation calm down a bit.” Jack said as he held Dennis close.
Robby walked over to them after he entered the locker room and kissed Dennis’ cheek softly before he took Jack’s hand and lifted it to his lips to kiss the back of his hand. “I am very glad that neither of you two are in more trouble than you could be.”
Jack chuckled slightly. “Yeah well, at least we have the next few days with each other.” Jack replied and smiled softly before he started to walk away. “See you when I get home!”
Dennis smiled softly as he grabbed his stuff out of his locker and looked at Robby, the older man kissing him on the head softly. “Wait-aren’t you leaving for sabbatical today?” Dennis asked.
“No, I just got you, I think I’ll just stay home for three months and let you and Jack come home to me.” Robby said as he wrapped an arm around Dennis to hold him close.
“I think that’s one of the best ideas you’ve ever had.” Dennis replied as he leaned against Robby slightly as they walked out of the hospital together.
