Chapter 1: sapphic old people

Chapter Text

Jack had been rather.. antsy, all day. And Marguerite really wasn't sure why. She noticed him sitting out on the porch, drinking some, much earlier in the day than usual, and not being as talkative to her at dinner…

That night… She decided they needed to talk. Her and Jack got ready for bed as usual, but once they were up close to each other… Marguerite spoke.

“Alright, Jack, I wanna know what's going on. You've had something on your mind all day, I can tell.” She said, pushing him to lay down further, so she could look him in the eye.

Jack blinked up at her, before brushing it off with, “Maggie, I don't know what you're talking about.”

“Oh, Jack - just tell me what you're thinking about, I want to talk to you.” Marguerite sighed, laying down on him with a small huff. Jack wasn't exactly one to talk about his feelings, but he usually at least talked to her some…

“Look, I - Marguerite, it's stupid, it's silly, it ain't… It's nothing, alright?”

“Bullshit. It's not nothing if it's kept you thinking all day on it. I'm your wife, Jack, you know I wanna help you.”

“I might… Be somethin’ else? Than myself?”

“... Pardon?”

“Like, I mean… Not Jack. But, well, I am- I'm not- just… A woman, I mean.”

Marguerite took a minute to process that. Her husband wasn't, well, her husband? She… No, no, she could work with this. After all, Jack would still be the same person, just not… Jack. That was alright.

“Oh, sweetheart, it's alright, it's not anything wrong, y'know…”

Jack didn't seem to think so, though. “Not anything - Marguerite, I'm-! I ain't - I can't be.. your husband anymore, I'm… I still love you, but, well…”

“... About that. I got something to tell you, I suppose.”

“Mm?”

“I… Do think I like women? As well as men, but… Well, my point is, this isn't necessarily a marriage ending revelation, alright?”

“... Oh. That's, uh, alright, I just… Y'know, it's gonna be a lot of.. change.”

“I can handle that.” Marguerite said, nestling her head against her shoulder. “Now, you wanna talk more in the morning?”

“Ah, sure. Goodnight hon.”

“Goodnight chére.”
