Work Header

you got a wicked smile (and those angel eyes)

Summary:

"Oh!", Tomiyama smiles as he takes a bite of his onigiri, "They're close, right? Kame-chan talks about Sakura-chan all the time!"

"He sure does", Wanijima scoffs, "It's always Oh, Sakura said this and Sakura did that and Sakura is so pretty. I felt like I knew the guy before I ever met 'im."

"W-wait a second", Akihiko waves his hands nervously, "Does…does Togame-san like Sakura-san?"

When Sakura's friends find out about Togame's feelings, they're determined to get the two of them together. Little do they know they might be too late to the party.

Work Text:

The Ori is emanating the same sinister energy it did all the way back when Bofurin and Shishitoren were still at odds, the gray skies threatening rain above as the neon sign glares ominously down at them.

However, Akihiko now knows there's nothing to fear. They're here on a friendly visit this time, a joint hang out to strengthen relations between the groups, especially with a change of leadership on the horizon for Bofurin, what with Umemiya's upcoming graduation.

Upon entering the abandoned movie theater, they're immediately met with members of their allied team milling about, loud and chaotic and carefree as they prepare the buffet. A bunch of fold-up tables and benches have been set up in the entrance hall, the doors to the main theater wide open, surely ready to host some fights after dinner. Akihiko is excited to see how the Shishitoren members have improved, and how their own guys measure up. He's hoping to take someone on himself, and it fills him with equal amounts of excitement and jittery anxiety.

"Thinking about your fight, Nire-kun?", Suo suddenly appears next to him, causing Akihiko to jump. God, that guy moves like a ninja.

He nods, fingers absentmindedly tracing the spine of the notebook he's holding.

"You'll do wonderfully", Suo reassures him with a hand on his shoulder, gently steering him towards where their friends have migrated. Akihiko didn't even notice he'd been left behind, too lost in his own thoughts. "And there's no shame in losing either, if you're worried about that. It wouldn't diminish your progress."

Akihiko knows Suo is right. He's not trying to prove himself to anyone except himself — and maybe Suo — , so he should just focus on applying what he's learned and having fun.

But first, food.

They mingle a little bit, Tomiyama and Togame coming by to chat. It's crazy how much the leaders have changed, Akihiko can't help but admire their dedication to returning Shishitoren to its roots and putting the past behind them. The two look relaxed and happy to be where they are, Tomiyama grinning brightly, light in his eyes, as he jumps around Umemiya like an over-excited squirrel.

On the other hand, Togame is watching it all happen with a quiet pride lighting up his constitution, his smile warm and lazy. Akihiko notices he's watching Sakura, who's trying to weasel some chicken skewers into his mouth before the buffet officially begins. He shakes his head in fond exasperation, and notices Togame doing the same.

They're friends, aren't they? Flipping through his notes, Akihiko recalls Sakura going to see Togame sometimes, mentioning that the older boy did this or said that. The summer festival also comes to mind, with the two of them standing apart from everyone else, chatting and eating. It's nice to see Sakura being so popular. He deserves it.

Soon, Akihiko finds himself seated at a table with the group from the original Shishitoren incident, Sakura and Suo on each side of him.

Before the buffet — which consists of an assortment of takeout from the various restaurants and bars dotted around Shishitoren's territory — is opened, Tomiyama and Togame get up to greet everyone officially. Notably, Tomiyama has decided to stand on the bench, yet Togame is still taller than him. As a short guy himself, Akihiko sympathizes.

"Thanks so much for coming, everyone!", Tomiyama trills, his delight palpable, "Kame-chan and I are so happy to host this meetup and we hope you guys enjoy yourselves!"

Everyone claps politely, smiling up at the energetic leader. It's good to see him without that dead look in his eyes. Akihiko shudders just at the memory.

Tomiyama opens his mouth again, but Togame smiles and speaks before any more words can come out.

"Dig in."

Unleashing dozens of teenage boys onto a banquet of fried foods and sweets is akin to feeding starving tigers at a zoo, Akihiko thinks as he observes the carnage. He's quite hungry himself, but — while he's ready and willing to fight someone today — he doesn't particularly want to throw hands over a piece of karaage. At his table, only Suo and Kiryu have also remained seated, which doesn't surprise him. Suo doesn't eat anyway, and Kiryu is too chill of a guy to fight someone over food.

The three of them smile wryly at each other as they wait their turn, eyes trained on their friends on the front lines, especially their grade captain.

Sakura is using his lack of height and superior speed to his advantage, filling up his plate with all sorts of goodies. Unfortunately for Sakura, it seems everyone wants to talk to him. His friends can tell he's more interested in the food than any conversation, his shoulders tense and foot tapping on the floor, but he still takes the time to listen — or pretend to listen — to what the others say to him. Occasionally, he even bothers with a reply that's not just an acknowledging grunt.

When Sakura seems about satisfied with his plate and begins his trek back to their table, Togame appears from his left to speak with him. Sakura comes to a stop and, for the first time, actually looks interested. He cranes his neck up to look at Togame, nodding along to the older boy's words. Akihiko can't believe he's actually taken his eyes off his spoils.

"Those two get along, huh?", Kiryu points out what Akihiko was thinking earlier, "I remember them hanging out at the festival."

"Mhm", Suo agrees, "Sakura-kun left quite the lasting impression."

He tends to do that, Nirei thinks. Out loud, he hums: "Sakura-san asked him for help against Noroshi. They must be good friends."

"What are you guys gossiping about?", a voice comes from behind them. It seems the other occupants of their table, sans the two boys in question, have returned. Hiragi's eyebrow is raised in disapproval.

Kiryu inclines his head in the direction of their observation targets. "Them."

"Oh!", Tomiyama smiles as he takes a bite of his onigiri, "They're close, right? Kame-chan talks about Sakura-chan all the time!"

Seems Suo was right about the impression Sakura left. It's really not surprising, Sakura has this effect on people all the time. With his earnest determination and adorable personality, it's a no-brainer why people would feel drawn to him.

"He sure does", Wanijima scoffs good-naturedly, "It's always Oh, Sakura said this and Sakura did that and Sakura is so pretty. I felt like I knew the guy before I ever met 'im."

Akihiko blinks. Out of the corner of his eye, he sees Suo's and Kiryu's matching expressions of surprise, which soon turn into equally matching expressions of pure cunning. Uh oh.

Kanuma and Arima chuckle, voicing their agreement. It seems Togame's…infatuation is a well-known topic among the members of Shishitoren.

"W-wait a second", Akihiko waves his hands nervously, "Does…does Togame-san like Sakura-san?"

At his words, everyone's gazes return to the boys in question, making sure they're still over there and haven't approached the table yet. It seems they all agree they'd rather not have them overhear this particular conversation.

To their luck, they're still standing there, Sakura diligently holding onto his paper plate. As usual, Togame seems to take his time, casually leaning back against the table behind him while he tells Sakura something. Sakura, for his part, is clearly paying attention to the words and replies eagerly. In typical Sakura fashion, his ears are pink. Akihiko wonders what the two of them could be talking about.

"I mean…", Wanijima grins.

"Obviously", Sako speaks up for the first time with a roll of his eyes, gaze fixed on the slice of cake in front of him. To his right, Hiragi elbows him softly, but the fond smile on his face doesn't look very reproachful.

With a gasp, Akihiko pulls out his notebook and immediately jots this new information down. Is it kind of invasive and maybe a little disrespectful? Well, he'll think about that when he gets home. Right now, his desire for data is clouding his mind too much to contemplate the ethics of his behavior.

"Can't blame him", Kiryu smirks. Suo nods along thoughtfully, a sly look on his face.

At the head of the table, Umemiya chuckles.

"Is this something we should be talking about?", he asks. While he's clearly trying to be the voice of reason, Akihiko can't help but notice that he hadn't bothered to interrupt them before.

"It's not like Togame is subtle", Sako rolls his eyes again. Akihiko hopes they don't get stuck like that one day.

"Oh, I'm sure Kame-chan wouldn't mind!", Tomiyama smiles at Umemiya, "He's a chill guy."

Right…The memories Akihiko has of him smashing a glass bottle on someone's head and beating Sakura's face in beg to differ, but he keeps quiet.

"More importantly", Suo claps his hands, "Does our dear grade captain feel the same?"

The table falls silent all at once. Akihiko eyes Sakura and Togame again, his eyes narrowed in contemplation. It seems they have finally ended their conversation and are moving towards the table. The unnatural silence they encounter there must tip them off, as Sakura immediately frowns at the group.

"The fuck are y'all actin' so weird for?"

"No reason, Sakura-kun", Suo smiles innocently, "What took you two so long?"

Akihiko sighs. He's curious too, but Suo is playing with fire.

Togame chuckles, a large hand coming up to ruffle Sakura's hair before he sits down, his own plate already on the table thanks to Tomiyama.

"Just wanted to chat", he says, digging into a truly impressive number of dumplings.

With reddened cheeks, Sakura plops into his seat as well, still glaring at his friends. He's an oblivious guy, but he has a knack for knowing when people are talking about him. Thankfully, Sakura seems to feel secure enough in their friendship by now not to assume the worst.

Kiryu offers to bring him some food as he finally gets up now that the rush is over, so Akihiko's able to remain seated and think. It must be mentioned that Sakura blushing because of Togame is no proof of anything, considering he grows red at almost everything. It's an endearing trait of his that will probably never fully disappear. Still, Akihiko can't help but wonder if there is something between them. Clearly, there is on Togame's part, but Sakura seems…different around the other boy in a way Akihiko can't quite put into words.

Within their friend group, they have never really talked about romance. It just hasn't come up, but considering that Sakura reacts incredibly strongly to the topic, it's easy to assume he's got no experience. Does he have interest in it, though? Does Sakura even like guys? Akihiko taps his chin, deep enough in thought that he barely notices Kiryu placing a plate of food down in front of him. He nods quickly in thanks, mind preoccupied.

Togame is a nice guy, if one ignores his past actions, which Akihiko graciously will. He's kind and patient, a nonchalant confidence about him, and he's tall and handsome to boot. He wouldn't be a bad choice for their friend, Akihiko can admit that. On top of that, he knows Sakura goes to see him sometimes. He also knows Togame gave him good advice at the festival, and that they clearly enjoy each other's company.

Still, that's not yet any different to Sakura's other friendships.

It seems he will have to do some investigating.

Clearing his throat, he addresses the rest of the table, keeping his words cryptic.

"About our earlier topic", he bravely looks at Tomiyama, heat rushing to his face when he feels Sakura's piercing gaze on him, "I will do some research."

Tomiyama giggles in excitement, while Hiragi massages his temples. Sakura frowns at him.

"No need to look so betrayed, Sakura-kun", Suo comes to his rescue, "We were simply inquiring about some renovation options for the Ori. Boring stuff."

With a huff, Sakura turns back to his food.

Phew, Akihiko breathes out a sigh of relief, Thanks, Suo.

Akihiko's not quite sure how to go about this.

There's no way he can just go up to Sakura and ask him if he has a crush, that'd be insane! Sakura's romance sensor would most definitely go off and cause the other boy to explode into a million little flustered Sakuras. Akihiko's too busy to deal with that.

So, he needs a plan.

How does one interrogate their friend without making it obvious? Sensitive and reactive, Sakura must be handled with the utmost care when it comes to matters of the heart, and while Akihiko thinks of himself as a decently smart guy, and he knows he's pretty friendly and trustworthy, he's not good at manipulating situations to his advantage.

Thankfully, he knows someone who is.

"Suo-san!", he catches the taller boy's sleeve as he passes him by and promptly drags him into the hallway. Suo lets himself be manhandled, well used to this behavior from his fellow vice captain by now. Akihiko is glad for it, as he does not have the strength nor the time to convince Suo to do anything he doesn't want to do.

"What is it, Nire-kun?", his friend smiles at him with a raised eyebrow. There's an amused twinkle in his eye that makes it clear he's already got a hunch about where this is going. He makes no move to relieve Akihiko of the burden to bring it up though.

"W-well", Akihiko stammers, wringing his hands, "I wanna ask Sakura-san about Togame-san, right? But like, I'm not sure how to do that in a way that doesn't, you know -"

"Activate Sakura's fight or flight response?", Suo finishes the thought with a smirk.

"Precisely. Any ideas?"

Suo hums thoughtfully, his gaze on the grimy window. It's a nice day today, the sun is shining and the autumn leaves are blowing gently in the wind.

"Leave it to me", is all Suo says before the bell suddenly rings. Akihiko seems to have no choice but to do just that.

It's lunch break when Suo seemingly decides to set whatever plan he has in motion. As usual, everyone's gathered around Sakura's desk, the boy himself munching on some curry bread as Tsugeura tells them about a bear that allegedly escaped from a zoo last week. It's quite the riveting tale, even if Tsugeura seems convinced he could fight the bear and win.

Akihiko would be interested in seeing that.

"Say, Sakura-kun", Suo uses his vantage point of where he sits right next to Sakura to lean over and poke his cheek. The grade captain reacts as predicted, snapping at Suo with red cheeks.

"What d'ya want?"

"Have you seen Nakamura-san lately?"

Akihiko blinks. Huh? Where is this going?

Obviously thinking the same thing, Sakura scratches his head in confusion but replies anyhow.

"Uh, I saw him like two weeks ago. Why?"

Suo smirks. "Are him and Shizuka-san together yet?"

Ah, Akihiko thinks he knows what Suo's trying to do, Get him worked up over someone else's romance to distract him from the actual goal. Not bad.

Of course, Sakura blushes furiously, his grip on the bread tightening. Some of the sauce spills out at the end and drops to the floor.

"W-what the fuck d'ya care?", he glares at Suo, who's adopted his well-practiced mask of innocence. Too bad none of them buy it anymore. "I dunno."

Undeterred by Sakura's bad attitude, Suo shrugs. "Just curious. They were quite sweet, don't you think?"

Kiryu giggles from his perch on top of his desk. He's yet to properly meet anyone in Roppo Ichiza, but he's heard the stories. Akihiko had told everyone the details with great dramatic flair, of course.

"Huh? I- I guess, whatever", Sakura grumbles into his food. His blush is still present, but it's cooled from bright red to a soft cherry blossom pink. It's now or never.

"I think so too", Akihiko speaks up, "I wish I had someone like that."

He cringes a little at himself but refuses to back down. Maybe his own vulnerability will be met with Sakura's own. It's a strategic venture, he's not thinking about anyone in particular, not at all.

"What about you, Sakura-kun?", Suo picks up the thread easily, "Anyone you have your eye on?"

Naturally, Sakura spits out his bread and his blush returns in full force. He looks at Suo like the boy's grown a second head.

"T-the fuck?"

Suo cocks his head. "What? I'm curious about my friends."

The tactic seems to have worked somehow, as Sakura mellows quicker than he usually would, noticeably staying seated. Suo managed to make it seem like this just naturally came up, rather than being a pointed interrogation.

Unaware of what's going on and yet surprisingly helpful, Tsugeura opens his mouth.

"Oh! We've never talked about crushes, have we? I met a girl at Muscle Power last week and her virtue really impressed me!"

Man, what a guy.

"That's great, Tsugeura-san!", Akihiko smiles at him.

Tsugeura nods, "I'm sure whoever Sakura-kun likes must be incredibly virtuous as well!"

Sakura becomes smaller in his chair, eyes trained on the ground and brows furrowed. It's clear he's thinking about something. Is there a chance…?

"I-", he scrunches his nose, "I guess there's someone. Or whatever."

Akihiko looks at Suo in surprise, who winks at him. Or at least Akihiko thinks it's a wink, it's a bit hard to tell when he's only got one visible eye.

"That's great, Sakura-chan!", Kiryu leans over to ruffle his hair, "Who is it?"

With a frustrated growl, Sakura crosses his arms. The now-empty wrapper of his lunch crinkles loudly as he does.

"N-none of yer business!", his words have alerted the rest of their classmates as well. Akihiko can see Anzai and Kakiuchi peering over at them. "It's like new, or whatever. I don't wanna talk 'bout it yet."

That's…surprisingly reasonable. Sakura must be pretty new to the world of romance, considering he'd never even had a friend until he came to Furin, so it makes sense that he'd take it slow. Akihiko can't help but burn with curiosity though.

"That's cool, you don't have to tell us who it is", he tries to calm Sakura down, "But maybe give us a hint! What are they like?"

Friends have the right to be a bit annoying, after all.

Flustered, Sakura glares at him. It does little to intimidate Akihiko though, he's in the throes of important research right now!

"Yeah, Sakura-chan, just tell us something small and we'll shut up about it", Kiryu grins, "Like, what do they look like?"

That's not something small!, Akihiko mentally reprimands Kiryu. Sakura doesn't seem to have noticed though, as he suddenly looks a little shy. His arms are still crossed and his cheeks red, but there's a softer expression on his face as he begins to mumble.

"T-tall", Akihiko needs to strain his ears to make out what he's saying, "Strong. Dark hair."

That's all he seems to be able to force himself to say. Clearly embarrassed, Sakura clears his throat before taking a sip of his water. The glare returns to his face.

"That good enough for ya?"

Akihiko meets Suo's eye, the two of them easily agreeing that yes, this is more than enough.

"Thank you for sharing this with us", Suo smiles at Sakura, trying to appease him, "We'd love to hear more when you're ready!"

It's got to be Togame, right?

Suo Hayato

He matches the description, but there's enough guys like that at Furin that we can't say for sure.

Kiryu Mitsuki

Yeah, but c'mon. It's too big of a coincidence not to be him, right?

Tall, dark and handsome? I mean...(˶•̀ ᎑-˶)

After hearing what Sakura had to say, Akihiko knows that they should leave it alone. Good friends wouldn't scheme to get him together with his crush when he clearly stated it was new and he needed time.

Still, it wouldn't hurt to help him out a little, right? They're not going to do anything drastic, like lock them in a closet or force them to kiss via spin the bottle (Kiryu was quite sad about his suggestions being shot down).

No, they'll just give them a light push. Gentle. Barely noticeable.

"They should fight", Suo suddenly says, breaking Akihiko out of his contemplations. The four of them are standing around a vending machine, Sakura having gone over to talk to Kaji, and they're trying to come up with a subtle matchmaking plan.

Akihiko fails to see how Suo's idea would help.

"That's how they became friends, right?", Kiryu asks, looking like he somewhat grasps what Suo is trying to say.

Oh, of course.

"Right!", Akihiko nods, "Fighting as a conversation…Togame became pretty smitten with Sakura after their first fight, so maybe if they go at it again…"

"Exactly", Suo smiles at him, "It might help speed things along."

It's a pretty brilliant plan. They all love to fight, so there's nothing suspicious about it, and a friendly spar between the two might help them work through some feelings. And if not, then no harm done.

"Tsuge-chan", Kiryu bumps his bottle of melon soda into the taller boy's biceps, "You guys have relatively similar fighting styles, how 'bout you ask Sakura to hit up Togame. Have him show you some moves?"

Togame is not a wrestler, but Akihiko agrees that Tsugeura might still benefit from some of his grappling techniques. And if they set it up like this, Sakura won't realize that the main purpose of the hang out is for him and Togame to spar. Akihiko is sure that will happen naturally.

Tsugeura lights up at the possibility of a friendly fight with someone this skilled, so he easily agrees.

Akihiko can't wait to see how this turns out.

"Tell me everything!", Nirei insists one last time before Mitsuki parts ways with him. The other boy is going on patrol with Suo, while Mitsuki is accompanying Sakura and Tsugeura into Shishitoren territory for their little sparring session with Togame.

"Don't worry, Nirei-chan", Mitsuki reassures the over-excited boy, "You'll receive periodic updates."

Once the other two leave, Mitsuki has to jog a little to catch up to Sakura and Tsugeura. He wishes he could ask Sakura to give him a piggyback ride again but that might send the wrong message if Togame happened to see it.

He asks Tsugeura instead, who happily takes him up on the offer and lifts him onto his back.

"So, have you sparred with Togame before?", Mitsuki asks.

Sakura, who's walking beside them with his hands in his pockets, shakes his head.

"Nah", he says, "Haven't gotten around to it yet."

Perfect.

Mitsuki hopes he won't have to do much to make it happen, but he's willing to pull out all the stops should the two of them somehow not stumble upon the idea themselves. There's no way they won't though, he thinks to himself, considering what he's heard about their original fight. They must both be itching for a rematch.

"Hey", Togame greets them once they arrive at the Ori. He's sitting up on the roof with a bottle of ramune, despite the fact that it's definitely too cold out to be doing that. Especially in fucking geta sandals.

"Hi", Mitsuki waves after Tsugeura lets him down, "I'm Kiryu Mitsuki! Nice to properly meet you."

Togame climbs down from the roof, relaxed and unhurried. He gives him a once over and a nod.

"Yeah, I remember you from the bridge", he inclines his head in Tsugeura's direction, "You too. Good work."

"Thanks!", Tsugeura grins, "I'm Tsugeura Taiga."

With introductions out of the way, the four of them make their way into the lair. Togame leads them to a smaller side room, which might've once been a staff or storage room. It's quite large, and most importantly, there's nobody else there.

It's clearly been refurbished into a training room of sorts, with mats on the ground and padding on one of the walls. There's various posters hung up, alongside a couple menus from local restaurants and some rather racy prints of scantily clad women and men. It makes Mitsuki giggle.

"Alright", Togame says from where he's migrated to stand next to Sakura, "Who was it that wanted the tips?"

Tsugeura involves Togame in conversation about wrestling or whatever, while Mitsuki observes Sakura. Their height difference is almost comical, with Sakura's head only coming up to Togame's chin. Though, Mitsuki's short ass isn't one to talk. As they chat, Togame casually wraps an arm around Sakura's shoulders — Bold! Mitsuki likes it — and to his utmost surprise, Sakura barely reacts. He seems to accept it as a normal gesture, even leaning into it slightly as he watches the two boys talk with half-lidded eyes.

Curious.

"Shall we?", Mitsuki claps his hands once. As much as he'd love to watch these guys interact all day, he does have plans for the evening he'd rather not miss.

Without further ado, Tsugeura pulls off his school jacket and gets into position. Togame, however, takes his time. He dips his head to mumble something unintelligible into Sakura's ear, the younger boy blushing and rolling his eyes in response. He shoves slightly at Togame's chest, but it doesn't have enough strength behind it to actually move him.

"Shuddup", he hears Sakura mutter, "Ya better kick his ass."

Togame chuckles deeply and finally lowers his arm, leaving Sakura to walk away while he also drops into a fighting stance.

Mitsuki and Sakura lean against the wall as they watch.

At the beginning, the two seem rather evenly matched, Tsugeura, as is par for the course, letting Togame get the first hit in. However, it quickly becomes apparent that Togame has the upper hand. He's got a good few centimeters on Tsugeura and while Tsugeura is a huge gym rat and Togame doesn't seem like the type, the older boy is naturally broader and matches him in strength easily.

The fight ends after about 15 minutes and Mitsuki has to admit that Tsugeura held his own quite well, especially considering what he's heard about Togame's fight against Sakura. As mellow as the dude seems, he knows he can be absolutely terrifying.

"Good job, Tsuge-chan!", Mitsuki gives him a thumbs up. His friend looks delighted. Even having been beaten, he's clearly already rearing to go again.

They spar for another two rounds that end similarly to the first one, though Tsugeura does manage to hold out a bit longer every time. It's impressive to witness how fast and vicious Togame can be. Sure, he's big and clearly strong, but he appears so sleepy and easygoing that his fighting style comes as a surprise even to Mitsuki, who has heard the stories.

Also, with his hair kind of messy and sweat starting to gather on his brow and chest, Mitsuki can't say he doesn't see the appeal. When Togame picks up his water bottle and his bicep flexes, Mitsuki briefly considers taking a shot at Sakura's man. He would never, of course, but the point stands. The dude is attractive.

A glance at Sakura fills Mitsuki with delight, because his friend's bi-colored eyes are laser-focused on Togame, clearly watching him with interest. There's no emotion showing on his face except slightly furrowed eyebrows, but Mitsuki feels more confident in their theory than ever.

He's scheming how to get Togame to take his shirt off when the older boy looks over at them. He waves Sakura over, a warm smile on his face. "How about it, Sakura? D'ya wanna have a go?"

Oh, that's even better! Mitsuki didn't even have to say anything.

( ˶°ㅁ°) !!

Tsugeura and Sakura switch places and their grade captain takes off his jacket and begins to stretch. Togame sits cross-legged on the floor while he waits, watching the other boy with a fond look in his eyes. Ugh, Mitsuki sighs, He's got it bad.

He truly hopes this works out. Sakura deserves a fun, normal teenage experience and Togame seems like a nice guy. He clearly cares about Sakura, he's a good fighter, he's hot and he likes food. A perfect match! Also, Mitsuki is hardly surprised by how smitten Togame is. After all, Sakura is a goddamn national treasure. Honestly, if Sakura was interested in him like that, he'd give it a go.

Alas.

"Go, Sakura-chan!", he cheers on his friend, who only waves him off. Mitsuki and Togame both laugh.

The fight is intense from the get go. As friendly of a spar as it is, the two are clearly taking it seriously. Togame has no qualms about knocking Sakura down and throwing him around, and Sakura gives back as good as he gets with those signature kicks of his and an agility that could probably send him to the Olympics.

Mitsuki whistles in appreciation when Sakura manages to knock Togame down, though the taller boy quickly gets up again. He seems a little dazed though, broad smile on his face as he eyes Sakura. Mitsuki would almost say he looks smug. Or proud.

Sakura gets a few more good hits in before Togame eventually succeeds in wrestling him to the ground, and it looks like they won't be getting back up again this time. Both of them are breathing heavily, chests touching as Togame hovers above Sakura, the younger boy's wrists firmly clenched in one of his hands.

Still determined, Sakura kicks his legs but with Togame's full weight on top of him, he has to admit defeat. Though, Mitsuki notices he doesn't look particularly upset about it. He looks quite distracted, actually, they both do.

Mitsuki raises an eyebrow when after several seconds, they still haven't moved from their position. It's beginning to look kind of compromising, the boys staring into each other's eyes and essentially breathing into each other's mouths. Sneakily, Mitsuki pulls his phone out to take a picture.

Unfortunately, Sakura seems to return to reality the moment Mitsuki shoves his phone back into his pocket. He wiggles around a little, face suddenly bright red, as if he has only now realized the nature of their position. Togame only chuckles lazily, rolling off of Sakura with ease and standing up. He holds a hand out to pull his sparring partner up, and Sakura takes it.

Their hands linger for longer than necessary, Togame leaning down to whisper something once more. Ugh, Mitsuki wishes he had supernatural hearing.

Pink-cheeked and grumpy, Sakura shoves Togame with his shoulder before turning to Mitsuki and Tsugeura, who have started getting ready to leave.

"Time to go?", he asks.

Mitsuki nods as he grabs his bag off the floor.

"Yeah, it's getting late and I've got a date tonight", he sighs, "You don't have to come with us, though."

He doesn't think Sakura will do anything with this little nudge, but Togame's a smart guy and takes the initiative. Damn, Mitsuki approves.

"Just stay for dinner, Sakura", he smiles, "It's on me."

With a huff and another glance in their direction, Sakura agrees. He wipes the sweat off his forehead before picking up his jacket.

A date? Mitsuki smirks.

"Have fun!", he calls over his shoulder as he quickly drags Tsugeura out of there. Better not give Sakura a chance to change his mind.

The next day, Akihiko pesters Kiryu for the details immediately. He listens to the story attentively, his excitement growing with every word. There's no way Sakura doesn't return Togame's feelings, right?

"Do you think their dinner date went anywhere?", he asks.

"I doubt it", Suo speaks up from behind him, causing Akihiko to jump. How long has he been standing there? "Sakura is quite repressed, after all."

That's not untrue. But it must have been a solid first step!

"I wonder, if Togame knew he had a chance…", Akihiko mumbles to himself, already reaching for his notebook, "If he just asked Sakura out, maybe…"

Kiryu hums but shakes his head. "We can't exactly tell him that. It'd break Sakura's trust, and we don't even know for sure."

With a sigh, Akihiko falls down into his chair.

"Yeah, but I wanna know if Togame is planning to do something, you know? Like, what if he's content to just yearn from a distance! We can't let this opportunity pass Sakura by!"

His two friends chuckle at his antics.

"So dramatic", Suo smiles teasingly. Akihiko blushes.

"I just…care…", he mumbles, embarrassed.

Kiryu shrugs, pulling out his phone. "Can't say I'm not curious."

"I'm sure Tomiyama would know."

Akihiko and Kiryu both whip their heads around to look at Suo, twin ideas visibly blossoming in their minds.

"Do you have his number?", Kiryu asks.

Luckily, Akihiko does! He got it from Umemiya, just in case. He knew it'd turn out to be useful one day.

Quickly, Akihiko sends off a text to Tomiyama, politely asking him if he knows anything. He's heard through the grapevine that Tomiyama is an awful texter, so there's a good chance he won't reply. Still, if it's about his precious Kame-chan, then surely he would care. Right? Akihiko can only hope.

Both things turn out to be true, as Tomiyama doesn't end up texting him back, but he does call. Akihiko scrambles to answer when his phone rings after class, Suo raising an eyebrow at the caller ID. Thankfully, Sakura is occupied talking to Anzai.

"Hello?"

"Hi!", Tomiyama's voice is loud and excitable through the tinny speaker, "You're Nirei-chan, right? The blonde guy from Furin with the freckles?"

Akihiko nods in agreement before realizing that Tomiyama can't see him.

"Yes", he answers diligently, "I hope it's alright that I contacted you."

While Tomiyama is very nice to them now, Akihiko still gets shivers down his spine when he remembers the tiny boy dragging an unconscious Furin student across the school courtyard. And he certainly remembers the horror he felt watching him scream his lungs out and take a bite out of Umemiya's neck on stage. So, he'd rather not piss him off.

"No problem!", comes the cheery reply, alleviating Akihiko's anxieties, "You wanna know about Kame-chan, huh?"

"Uh, yeah", Akihiko hushes his voice and hopes Tomiyama can still hear him, "Do you know if he maybe has any plans to, uhm, ask Sakura-san out?"

God, what a strange conversation to have with someone.

There's a delighted laugh on the other end of the call, Tomiyama answering: "I dunno, but I can ask! I know he likes Sakura-chan though. Like, a lot."

How cute, Akihiko laments, I hope someone likes me like that someday.

"It'd be great if you could find out", he tries to sound diplomatic, as if their discussion isn't completely ridiculous, "We don't want to accidentally interfere with anything."

"Ohh", Tomiyama giggles, "Are you guys matchmaking? I love that!"

Akihiko only chuckles awkwardly.

"I'll get you your info, don't worry! Bye bye, Nirei-chan!"

He hangs up as abruptly as he had called. Akihiko wipes sweat off his brow.

"And?" Lifting his eyes from his phone, he finds both Kiryu and Suo looking at him.

Nodding reassuringly, he says: "Tomiyama-san will find out for us."

"Kame-chan!", Choji makes sure to catch his best friend before he leaves the premises. They just had a successful training session with the rest of Shishitoren, and he remembers Togame mentioning that he has to go help his grandpa out after. Still, he should have a minute to talk, right? "Wait up!"

Togame comes to a stop, letting the shorter boy catch up before they start walking together. They don't live in the same direction but that's fine, Choji doesn't mind taking a bit of an evening walk.

"The mid autumn festival's coming up, isn't it?", Choji asks. Around them, the colorful leaves make for beautiful scenery where they're strewn across the asphalt and flying in the wind, the waning daylight painting the bar street a warm orange. This is probably Choji's favorite time of the year, he has to make sure to plan a Momijigari trip for the team before the trees are barren.

"Mhm", Togame hums happily. He seems content as well, and Choji is so glad to see it. In general, he's beyond relieved that they were able to build Shishitoren back up to how it used to be. No, better. Still, he often feels the guilt gnawing at him when he has a spare minute to think, anger coiling in his gut at the thought of what he put his best friend, and all of their friends, through.

He sighs, and lets the thoughts go. The past is the past, they can only look forward now.

Speaking of looking forward…

"You gonna take Sakura-chan to the festival?" It's a bold question, and Togame might think it comes out of nowhere, but at the same time, everyone in Shishitoren is painfully aware of Togame's affection for the younger boy. It's not like Togame will suspect him of anything.

Togame chuckles, his gaze trained on nothing in particular. He's smiling, the warm, lazy smile Choji loves so much. He hopes Sakura appreciates his best friend for how wonderful of a person he is.

"Was plannin' on it, but I gotta help gramps with the stall so I don't know if I'll have the time", he sighs. Ugh, Togame is such a responsible guy. Choji would offer to take a shift for him but he's a horrible cook, and Togame's grandpa would probably fire him after five minutes.

Oh well. He got the information the Bofurin first year wanted, so maybe he and his friends will come up with a course of action. Surely, they could figure out how to get Togame enough time off to enjoy the festival with Sakura.

Choji can see it now. The two of them alone, reminiscing about the last time they went to a festival together, enjoying the food and the sights. Maybe they'll win some game prizes for each other, and Sakura totally has to wear a really cute yukata! Then there'll be fireworks and voilà, no way they're not gonna kiss! Or at least confess their feelings. It's a foolproof plan.

Once he's waved goodbye to Togame at the guy's front door, he takes out his phone and sends off a text to Freckles.

( ˶°ㅁ°) !!

That's so cute!!!!!

We gotta find a way to make this happen!

Do you know anyone who could feasibly take over for him for an evening?

Satisfied, Choji pockets his phone. He doesn't bother to reply, they'll figure it out.

Akihiko is certain they've conducted the perfect plan.

Without Tomiyama's help — the guy really is an awful texter — they had to ask Hiragi to ask Sako about filling the time slot at the festival stall. Reluctantly, Sako asked around and some guy named Wanijima offered to do it. Akihiko remembers him vaguely as the dude with the weird eyes from the hang out. He was also coincidentally the one who exposed Togame's crush to them in the first place. He trusts him.

So, Wanijima is going to convince Togame to take an evening off from working at the stall and replace him, leaving Togame free to spend time with Sakura. They even chose the day that'll have the coolest fireworks show. On top of that, Kiryu already bought a beautiful yukata for Sakura to wear and Akihiko's gonna do his hair. Togame will be unable to resist him!

Satisfied, Akihiko updates the group chat — a new one that now involves several Shishitoren members — about the final details. He feels like the leader of some kind of spy group, and he loves it. Maybe he should get into tabletop role playing games or something, he might make a decent Dungeon Master.

The day of the festival, they all meet up at the Kiryu family estate to get ready.

"Do we really need to make this big of a fuss?", Sakura grumbles as Kiryu and Akihiko lay out an assortment of hair accessories and make up on Kiryu's floor table.

"Duh", Kiryu insists, motioning for Sakura to take off his outer layers. Blushing, the boy complies, soon left in only a white t-shirt and a pair of gym shorts. "Gotta look pretty, it's a special occasion!"

Sakura seems to disagree but wisely doesn't say another word. They all put on their yukatas and help each other wrap them properly. Appreciatively, Akihiko eyes Sakura. The piece Kiryu chose for him is a beautiful dark green — almost black — decorated with delicate, hand-stitched cherry blossoms along the collar and down the sleeves.

"You look lovely, Sakura-kun", Suo compliments him from where he's adjusting his earrings in the mirror. His own yukata is black with an intricate red dragon design. Akihiko thinks it's beautiful.

"T-thanks, I guess", Sakura stammers, clearly flustered, "Y'all look nice too. Or whatever."

They all giggle and thank him, Akihiko seeing his chance and stepping forward with a hair brush in hand. He gently guides Sakura to sit down in a bean bag chair and begins to brush his hair. Carefully, he parts the different colored strands so that neither color overlaps with the other. Sakura's hair is a bit longer than it was when he first arrived at Furin, and Akihiko wonders if he usually cuts it himself or if he goes to a barbershop. Somehow, Akihiko cannot imagine him getting his hair cut professionally.

Maybe he could do it for him.

"Can I put something in your hair?", Akihiko asks tentatively. He doesn't want to scare Sakura off, and it's not like he doesn't already look amazing, but he thinks a cute hair clip could really pull the look together.

Sakura eyes him with clear suspicion, but eventually just grunts in approval. Akihiko lights up, immediately rummaging through the mountain of hair accessories he and Kiryu had thrown together. It'll be a bitch to separate his own pieces from Kiryu's at the end of this.

Aha! He finally finds what he's looking for, pulling out a thin silver hair pin, a delicate cherry blossom attached to the end of it.

Gently, he pins the left side of Sakura's bangs back with the pin, dousing it in a fair amount of hairspray to ensure it stays in place. After all, Sakura likes to move around a lot.

"All done!", he grins at his handiwork.

Lips pursed, Sakura gets up to look in the mirror. He blushes brightly once he sees himself, the color only complimenting the rest of his ensemble. Akihiko can't quite tell what he's thinking but considering that he hasn't yet taken it all off or yelled at them, he must not hate it.

"Looks fine", he shrugs, "T-thanks."

Akihiko smiles proudly. He can't believe their beloved Sakura is going to have a boyfriend soon! Things change so quickly.

Jo was surprised when Wanijima suggested he take over a shift for him at the festival, but now that the day has come, he's honestly quite happy about it.

After all, this means he can enjoy the festivities with Sakura after all!

So, when 4 pm rolls around, Jo can't help but anticipate his team member's arrival. He hopes Sakura doesn't mind the smell of greasy food too much, there's no time for him to run home and take a shower before their arranged meet up time.

"Jo!", Wanijima calls out as he approaches. He's carrying a bag with him that feels a little out of place at a festival. What does he think he's gonna need to work at a food stall for a few hours? "How're you?"

Jo smiles and wipes his hands on a kitchen towel. The next batch is in the deep fryer, the perfect time for them to switch. Wanijima insisted he knew how to work all of the equipment, and Jo made sure to send him the instructions beforehand, so it should be fine. Hopefully. Wanijima is not the type of guy to mess around.

"'m good, you?", he asks as Wanijima makes his way behind the counter. He presses the bag into Jo's hands, who hesitantly holds onto it while Wanijima puts on the extra apron Jo's grandpa has provided.

"Me too", the other boy replies. Jo tries to hand the bag back to him, but he waves his hands. "Oh no, that's for you. Can't have you smelling like food on your date."

Jo blinks. This won't be able to get the smell out of hair or off his skin, but he appreciates the gesture. His shirt does feel a bit sweaty.

Shrugging, he opens up the bag to find a simple black t-shirt and a rolled up hanten. They're his. How the hell did Wanijima get access to his wardrobe?

He raises an eyebrow at the guy, but he just smiles at him slyly, so Jo reckons it's better not to ask. He'll worry about it later.

"Thanks", he nods at Wanijima before making his way behind the stall, quickly changing shirts and tying the cords of the hanten. He runs a hand through his hair and gulps down a sip of water. It'll have to do.

A glance at his watch tells him that Sakura will arrive soon, so he slowly makes his way to their designated meeting spot. Apparently, Sakura's friends wanted to enjoy the festival together for a bit before handing him over to Jo at the Shateki stall. Thinking about it, Sakura's friends have also been acting kind of weird lately, at least according to what he's told Jo. Oh well.

When he arrives at the stall, Sakura is watching his friend with the eye patch. Jo raises an impressed eyebrow when the guy knocks every target down with precision. Not bad, especially considering this game is most definitely rigged. The guy — he thinks his name is Suo — chooses a big dog plushie and immediately hands it over to that little blonde guy. Cute.

"Haruka", he greets Sakura, coming up behind him to tap him on the shoulder. The shorter boy jumps, whirling around to shove him slightly. "Hello to you too."

Sakura rolls his eyes but allows himself to be pulled into a quick hug. Jo waves at his friends, who are all staring at them like dead fish. Alright.

"H-hello Togame-san!", the blonde kid — Nirei? — speaks up, "Have fun!"

Quickly, and a little awkwardly given the gigantic stuffed animal he's holding onto, he ushers the others away, leaving Jo and Sakura alone. They both blink in confusion for a second before simultaneously shrugging. Jo winds an arm around Sakura's shoulders, finally taking a moment to appreciate his appearance.

He looks beautiful, of course, he always does. Still, whoever chose that yukata for him has a great eye, and the cherry blossom hair clip does funny things to Jo's heart.

"You look pretty", he compliments the other boy and begins to lead him down the path.

Blushing, Sakura bumps his head into Jo's jaw. Jo grins.

"Ya smell like fried food", he mumbles, "But I guess ya look good too."

Laughing, Jo presses a quick kiss to Sakura's head, ignoring the other's affronted squeak.

"We're in public", he hisses at him. God, he's such a cat.

Jo just hums, not bothering with a response, since he knows Sakura's not actually mad.

For a while, they just enjoy the festival together. They try the different foods being offered and play a few games, winning cheap prizes for one another as they chat about anything and everything.

As they're trying to find a good spot in the park on the outskirts of the festival in order to watch the fireworks, Sakura asks: "Do you think they know?"

Humming, Jo pulls him down to sit on the grass in a free spot. They'll get their clothes stained, but neither of them thought to bring a blanket, so they'll just have to deal with it. Once they're seated properly, he considers the question.

It's not like the two of them actively try to hide their relationship, as there's no reason to worry either of their friend groups would have a problem with it. They're far from the only gay people in Makochi, and it's not like there's any remaining tension between the teams. No, the only reason they're keeping it on the down low is because it's so new, and Sakura is still learning how to be in this type of relationship. As well-meaning as they may be, his friends knowing might cause them to tease him or press for information Sakura is not yet ready to share, so they've kept it mostly quiet.

Though, Jo thinks the Shishitoren guys have figured it out. Choji literally asked him if he was going to take Sakura to the festival! Clearly, they've realized the couple's desire for privacy and respect it. He's sure Sakura's friends either are or will be the same, depending on whether they have indeed realized the truth.

He knows Sakura is a little worried that they'll be mad at him for keeping a secret from them, but Jo can't imagine that at all. They're nice guys, understanding, and they know Sakura well. There's no way they'd take it personally, especially since Sakura didn't even lie to them about anything.

"Maybe", he finally answers. Jo's not close with the other Furin guys, so he can't say for sure. That Kiryu kid did look at him weirdly though, so who knows what's up with that. "Do you wanna tell them? Then it'll be out there and you won't have to worry anymore."

He never wants to be a cause of distress for Sakura, even indirectly. Of course, Jo understands his boyfriend's hesitance and reluctance considering everything he's been through. Romance, and even just the thought of it, is new and terrifying to him. The idea that anyone sees him as a friend, much less as a lover is occasionally still unfathomable to the boy. Still, Jo thinks his friends would understand if he asked them not to tease him too much. Even that Suo guy, mischievous little devil that he is, cares about Sakura deeply and would definitely adhere to his wishes.

Also, it's been a good two months now that they've been together. Keeping it under wraps any longer would probably just make it even more difficult for Sakura to finally open up.

"I-", Sakura makes a contemplative noise. His head comes to rest on Jo's shoulder. He smells like honey and spice. Not his usual shampoo but lovely nonetheless. "I think so."

Warmth spreads through Jo's chest at the admission, his arm coming up around Sakura to hug him tightly. Sakura sighs in response to the reassuring pressure, nuzzling his head further into Jo's neck. Every time they do this, Jo is filled with the anxiety one feels when a skittish cat decides to curl up in your lap. One wrong move, and it'll recoil and run away.

"Okay", he looks up as the first of the fireworks light up the sky. They're green and yellow, far enough away that it's not too loud, but still close enough for them to admire their beauty.

More colorful lights follow, the explosions taking different shapes and forms. The air is crisp but still mild enough that they're not cold, curled up together as they are. With a wistful sigh, Jo looks down at Sakura, admiring the way the fireworks bathe his face in multicolored lights. His features, both sharp and delicate, beautiful from the long eye lashes framing expressive eyes down to the small nose, pouty lips and shapely jaw, stand out even more like this. Jo is truly a lucky guy.

He wonders if Sakura would let him kiss him here. Sure, there's a lot of people around but no one's paying them any mind, everybody's eyes fixed on the fireworks display or their own dates. He respects Sakura's stance on PDA, of course, but in moments like these it's hard not to just lean down and take what he wants.

"Haru", he says quietly, the boy's responding hum resonating in his chest, "Can I kiss you?"

Jo expects him to shoot up and glare at him, maybe berate him for being so callous, but instead he just blushes a pretty pink and looks around them, head barely lifting off Jo's shoulder to do so. He must be really comfortable.

Eventually, Sakura bites his lip and shrugs. "Fine."

Delighted, Jo smiles and lets his arm fall from Sakura's shoulder to secure it around his waist. He pulls the boy even closer, dislodging his head from his shoulder in the process. A little sleepy, Sakura looks up at him, cheekbones still a pretty pink to match the blossoms on his clothes and in his hair. His heterochromatic eyes are bright and his lips are pursed in embarrassment. God, he's perfect.

Fireworks in the background and a pretty boy in his arms do make Jo feel like he's landed himself in some kind of rom-com, he can almost feel the generic pop music playing in the background. Regardless, he leans down to meet Sakura, who has helpfully tipped his chin up, halfway. Their lips meet softly, no fanfare necessary. As always, Sakura's are a little chapped and he tastes like the bebi kasutera they just had.

Gingerly, Jo lifts his other hand to cup Sakura's face, a thumb pressing into his cheek as they deepen the kiss. Sakura kittenishly licks into his mouth, sugary saliva getting mixed between their tongues as they lazily explore each other. Jo sighs deeply, a profound happiness settling in his entire body.

Just as Sakura lets out an adorable little groan, a loud yelp interrupts them. They jump apart, the voice having clearly come from right behind them, and turn around. Sakura's face is burning, while Jo just lifts his eyebrows in annoyance. Whoever just messed this up for him better have a damn good reason.

"S-sakura-san!" Oh, great. It's Sakura's anxious friend. Nirei, if he's not mistaken. "Togame-san! I'm so sorry!"

Next to him, Sakura sighs loudly. Clearly, this is not how he had wanted his friends to find out.

"'s fine, don't yell so much", Sakura mumbles. He quickly stands, pulling Jo up with him. Nirei is standing there with his mouth hanging open, eyes wildly jumping from Sakura to Jo and back, like he doesn't quite know where to look. Jo hopes their lips aren't too red. For Sakura's sake, of course, if it was up to him he'd happily make out with Sakura on national television.

"I'm so sorry!", Nirei repeats himself and bows awkwardly.

"Just, uh", Sakura wrings his hands and boldly, Jo reaches over to take one of them. He rubs soothing circles into the pale skin, hoping to reassure his boyfriend somewhat. "I'm sorry, I guess."

Nirei blinks, clearly confused.

"Why?"

Sakura's grip on his hand tightens, Nirei's eyes jump down as if only now noticing the gesture. A grin clearly threatens to break onto his face.

"'Cause I didn't tell y'all about this", Sakura shrugs, "I was gunna, but ya know…It's still new and -"

"Well, yeah", Nirei interrupts. It would've been rude if he didn't look genuinely flabbergasted. "Of course it's new, when would you even have told me? It's all good, Sakura-san, I'm really happy for you!"

Oh. Oh.

Sakura's friends did not know.

"No, Nirei", Sakura shakes his head, "Uh…We've been datin' for like two months."

Frozen in place, it seems to take a moment for this information to compute in Nirei's mind. After a few tense seconds, he abruptly doubles over in laughter. Sakura yelps, perplexed.

"It's f-", Nirei chuckles once more before finally calming himself enough to speak, "It's fine, Sakura-san. You don't owe us any information unless you're comfortable sharing it! I'm so happy for you, and the others will be too."

His smile is sincere and blinding. Jo knew there was nothing to worry about, and he's glad Sakura can now rest assured as well.

"Then why'd'ya laugh?", Sakura pouts. Though, he would deny it if anyone called it that to his face.

"Oh", Nirei giggles again, "It's just that we've been trying to set you guys up."

Of course. Jo should've realized this earlier. While Wanijima is a nice guy, he's not so nice that he'd offer to work Jo's shift for no good reason. And that random sparring session too…Jo can't help but laugh. After a moment of shocked silence, Sakura joins in as well, his chuckles soft but relieved.

"Uh, well", he mutters, "Clearly not necessary."

"I can see that", Nirei smiles at them and bows again, "I'll take my leave then! See you tomorrow, Sakura-san. Bye, Togame-san!"

With that, the boy quickly turns on his heel and walks away, presumably to find the rest of the Furin first-years. They didn't tell him not to tell anyone else, so Jo is sure the whole school will know about them tomorrow.

Looking over at Sakura, he tries to gauge the other boy's reaction. Surely, he also knows that their secret is now fully out of the bag, but he looks nothing but relaxed. Maybe a little miffed, but Jo attributes that to the meddling and the awkwardness of being discovered kissing.

"You okay?", he asks anyway.

Sakura squeezes his hand and steps closer to him. A quick kiss is pressed into his jaw.

"Jus' fine."
