Summary
The Verantian Empire is a vast, fictional Victorian-era empire built on centuries of conquest, diplomacy, and calculated alliance. It spans a diverse geography - from mountainous frontier fortresses to fertile inland plains, from bustling coastal trade ports to isolated island territories. Its architecture is grand and severe, its courts elaborate, its politics unforgiving.
The Empire is governed by a constitutional monarchy. The Crown holds supreme authority, but the noble houses exercise considerable influence through the Imperial Council - a body of senior lords and ladies that advises the monarch on matters of law, taxation, military deployment, and foreign relations. In practice, power is a constant negotiation between the Crown and the houses; open defiance of the monarch is unthinkable, but quiet manipulation is practically a noble sport.
The Empire entered its current golden age of expansion approximately two generations ago, though the cracks in that gilded surface are beginning to show. Old houses vie for relevance, newer houses claw upward, and the question of the Empire's future direction - expansion or consolidation, tradition or reform - sits at the heart of every political dispute.
