Chapter Text
Bokuto Koutaro was having two HUGE problems.
One: His theatre club was performing Hadestown for their spring musical.
…Okay, that wasn’t so bad! Bokuto really liked Hadestown! The music, the acting, the costumes! Bokuto loved them all! But. Onto problem number two.
Two. They only had a violin, a big violin and a triangle for their onstage orchestra! A violin! A big violin!
“Bokuto-kun, I play the viola.”
“Bokuto-san, I play the cello…”
Whatever! Same things. And a triangle, as he was saying. The second problem was what made the first an actual problem! You couldn’t have a proper Hadestown performance with only a viola, cello and triangle! Hadestown with only a viola, cello and triangle was basically just sad talking with the occasional screeches and ding in the background!
What they needed was a piano. Yes, a piano would tie everything together perfectly! Bokuto made a mental note to learn how to play the piano before the show.
…Maybe that was a bit of a stretch, but what else could Bokuto do, huh!?!
Anyways, concluding his little self narration, he and the rest of crew and cast were currently discussing their predicament of their grand total of two instruments. Auditions were about a week earlier, and Bokuto had achieved the amazing narrative role of…–!?
*drumroll pls*
*like guys actually drumroll for our cutie patootie bokuto*
*pls*
HERMES!
Great, right?!
*yes very great*
Anyhoo, the self introduction narration part is over for REAL this time! Onto the rehearsal!
“Oikawa-san, do you know where my folder is?” Yachi Hitoka, their amazing Eurydice! At first, Bokuto was amazed at the fact that such a shy and small girl had gotten the role of a badass woman street savage, but man, when he heard Yacchan perform, he was blown away! Literally! Someone decided to turn on the stage fan at full force right where he was standing. “I’ve looked everywhere and I can’t find it!”
“Yachi-san, it’s sticking out of your bag,” a calm voice called from the front of the stage. Kita Shinsuke, forever reliable stage manager for the AGES!
“HAAAH!? BUT I CHECKED MY BAG! I PROMISE I DID! I‘M SO STUPID! I DON’T DESERVE TO BE A PART OF THE MUSICAL I‘M SORR-”
“Yachi-chan!! I saw Oikawa-san slip it in your bag after you looked in it!” HINATA SHOUYO! HIS NUMBER ONE, AMAZING, UP-AND-COMING, SUPERB DISCIPLE! For their musical, Hinata was the official choreographer of every musical number (plus being their triangle player), and UNSURPRISINGLY, they were all very fun to do, which basically meant Bokuto got to do a bunch of snazzy spins and poses!
“Chibi-chan~ whatever do you mean? I don’t ever recall putting it in! Ever!” Oikawa Tooru, their Orpheus that had a terrifyingly angelic voice and about ten bajillion fangirls trying to break into the stage area.
Pretty gay as well.
“Trashykawa, ya lyin’ dirtbag.” Iwaizumi Hajime, Oikawa’s terrifying boyfriend and ensemble partaker. How they got together in the first place was a scary thought for Bokuto.
“Hehe, tsundere boyo is angry~”
“Better post this for my Snapchat followers.”
“Can you two not?”
Fates 1, 2, and 3, Tendou Satori, who was also their violin-
“Viola.”
viola player, Suna Rintarou, and Tsukishima Kei, the ones who probably told little children that the monster under their bed would eat them if they didn’t go to bed on time.
No, Bokuto had not fallen for this!
Okay, maybe he had fallen for it ONCE, and ONCE only.
That night, he had gotten about 14 hours of sleep.
“HEY, DUMBASS! WHERE THE HELL DID YOU HIDE THE CONTROL REMOTE!?”
“Kageyama-kun, it’s on the table behind you. You don’t need to assume that everything is Shoyo-kun’s fault, yaknow…”
Kageyama Tobio and Kozume Kenma, their two lighting and sound board members! Kenma-kun used the lights like how he played video games, so Bokuto was sure that that department would be perfect! Kageyama-kun just seemed to go with the flow, yet the sound system and mics were still in tip-top shape so, that was also really good!
“Ohohoho… Kenma is exasperated! Better not venture farther, sorry Traveller!” Kuroo Tetsuro, his one and only bro, bro and ho, his Bro Nye the Science Guy, and the list goes on and on. All ya need to know is that Kuroo was Bokuto’s number one bro for life! He also was Persephone, and the hair and makeup crew was forcing him to wear a ginger wig and green robe. Kuroo, of course, was somehow excited about this.
“Kuroo-san, I will be exasperated if you don’t tell me why you dunked the wig I paid for in bleach.” Their aforementioned hair & makeup crew head, Sakusa Kiyoomi, number one germaphobe and clean freak. Though he constantly sprayed sanitizer everywhere, the stage makeup designs were tip-top, bold and elegant, with not a hair out of place.
“Omi-Omi, I could be Persephone instead! Gimme tha’ wig- AUEGH NOYA-KUN GERROFF-” Atsumu Miya, official understudy of almost every role, otherwise their head ensemble performer. Regularly has fights with Oikawa on who should have been Orpheus.
“NO NO NO NOT UNTIL YOU GIVE ME BACK MY POWER TOOLS-” Nishinoya Yuu, sub-head of props and chaos gremlin. He and his other sub-head, Tanaka Ryuunosuke, who was currently having an internal crisis in the corner after Kiyoko Shimizu rejected him again, found and made surprisingly good props, but their power tools were super loud at every single practice.
“Guys, guys, please get off each other- I need you to let me know what you think about these set pieces-” Sugawara Koushi, assistant stage manager and sub-head of the set crew. A second mother to the whole cast, but scary when mad.
“Suga, I think you’re going to have to leave them be.” Sawamura Daichi, fellow assistant stage manager and sub-head of set crew, in addition to being the unspoken ‘father’ of their large group as well.
“Noya, I need you here for a thought I had, could you come over real quick?” Azumane Asahi, their head of costumes, successfully diverted Nishinoya’s attention from being near to placing Atsumu in the hospital.
In response, Nishinoya bounded over, staring at Asahi like a lovesick and focused puppy. Bokuto ships.
“Satori, could you hand me my script? I need to write some blocking down.“ Ushijima Wakatoshi, their Hades. Almost everyone was scared of his unimaginably deep stage acting voice, except for his equally scary boyfriend, Satori Tendou, who as mentioned before, is one of their Fates!
The red-head bounded over, laughing about something along the lines of “Wakkun, are ya going to lift up the Wall? I think it’s a good idea~!”
“Guyyyyyyyys… Can we talk about the band? I’m Hermes! I deserve a whole orchestra! But all we have are a viola, cello, and triangle!” And of course, best for last, Bokuto Koutaro, Hermes and currently in a mopey mood about the music.
“Hermes also deserves someone who can remember all of his lines,” Tsukishima muttered, looking over.
“Bokuto-san, where are we going to get more instruments?” Yamaguchi Tadashi, their cello player asked. “I’ve already asked everyone I know, and they’ve all declined.”
“Uh,” Bokuto huffed. “I’ll figure something out?”
Kita smiled wearily, stepping down from the stage.
“Bokuto-kun, I’m sure you will,” he assured. “But now, rehearsal is over and I really don’t want you all to be kicked out of the school.”
There was a resounding “Ossu!” as everyone packed up their bags, heading out for the day. As Hinata left, he stopped in front of Bokuto, who was still trying to shove his script in his already overflowing bag.
“Bokuto-senpai! Pleaseeeee get us a pio- no wait- piane- that’s not it- keyboarder? No, that’s not it either! Whatever, you know what I mean! A person that plays the piano!” Hinata jumped in excitement. “The choreo would be so much cooler with riffs and melodies and stuff!”
With that, he bounded out of the room to catch up with Kageyama, who was sprinting to beat the former. Bokuto took a deep breath, promising to Hinata that we would get a piano-player. He had to show his little underclassman how amazing his senpai was!
Finally managing to fit the script in, Bokuto hurried out of the room to be able to flop onto his bed and start planning out ideas to find a pianist. As he rushed down the hallways, a sound distracted him, low melodic notes drifting through the air. Bokuto skidded to a stop, following the music coming from a… piano! Yes, Bokuto had to find whoever was playing the music!
Eventually, Bokuto made it to an abandoned music room. He caught his breath, muttering, “This place is creepy. Why wouldja play the piano here?”
Bokuto peeked inside nonetheless, catching sight of a boy, probably around his age or a little younger, seated at the piano, fingers dancing over the keys. The boy looked ethereal, with a beautiful face, delicate features, and black hair mussed in multiple places.
As Bokuto watched, he noted one thing.
Even though the piece was a very emotional song, to Bokuto at least, the boy kept a flat expression, his eyes empty. Why would he be so emotionless if his music was so pretty, so emotion filled? He was so calm, while the song that poured out of the piano sounded as if the world was coming to a close, and the boy was the last one remaining on the face of the planet.
(Bokuto was very proud of this comparison, by the way)
The boy’s fingers stopped moving, and the melody concluded with a final flourish. His hands dropped as he sighed, a very pretty sigh, in Bokuto’s opinion.
That was when Bokuto had an idea.
A great idea!
The best idea of his life.
He popped up from his hiding spot, screaming,
“CAN YOU BE THE PIANIST FOR OUR MUSICAL?”
The boy froze, stared at Bokuto, then jumped up from his seat, rushing past Bokuto in a hurry to escape the loud madman.
