Work Text:
"–nie. Connor! Connor wake up, you're phone is ringing." Connor stirred before sitting up and pulling his phone off the dresser next to him.
He didn't recognize the number, "Hello..?" He waited for what seemed like 20 minutes.
"Oh! I'm so glad you answered!"
Connor froze, the far-too-cheery tone on the other end gave him way to many not-so-happy memories.
"Oh heyyy." He pulled himself from the covers and speed-walked out into the living room. He slowly shut the bed room door and turned on the kitchen light. He squinted as he made his way through the bright room.
"So... How have you been Ch–Connor!?" Connor frowned as swapped the phone from his hand to his shoulder and poured himself a cup of coffee.
"Good, I guess." He mumbled and took a sip.
"Great! So you're father and I have started on a new diet!" Connor rubbed his eyes and made a small 'mhm'. "Oh, I should probably get to the reason I called you." Connor opened his phone to see a shit ton texts from Zoe. She hadn't sent him this many texts since that one week he spent too much time at Evan's and their parents were gonna call the police.

"Connor you there?"
"Huh, yeah. What were you saying, Cynthia." Connor took another sip of his coffee.
"Oh. I thought you'd let go of your 'i hate my parents' phase by now. Anyway dear, I wanted to ask you if we could have family dinner at your house?" Connor coughed
"I mean you don't have to agree! I just really hoped you would since we haven't seen you in a couple years. I don't even know where you went! You just disappeared an changed your phone number." She sniffled. "I guess I'll just stop wasting your time. Bye Connor."
"Wait! It's alright. You guys can come over, just when?" Connor knew he would have one hell of a time explaining this to Evan later.
"Maybe sometime next week?"
"I'd have to check ou–my schedule."
"Ahh!! Yay!! I get to see my baby g–boy, after so long!!" Connor felt a small tug on his sleeve to see, Harmony standing with her medium-sized purple and white unicorn stuffed animal in her arms. "Daddy.. I had a bad dream. Why are you out here?" Connor set the phone down. "Hold on Cynthia."
Connor picked Harmony up. "Who are you talking to Daddy?" Harmony asked wrapping her arms around Connor's neck, the unicorn still in her hand. "No one, how about I take you to my bed and you lay down and try to go to sleep there?" Harmony nodded.
"Daddy, guess what!" Harmony asked right before they left the living room. "What is it ladybug?" Connor didn't worry about the fact that his mother could probably hear them right now. "I start first grade tomorrow! I'ma big kid now!" She grinned and they started walking into him and Evan's room. "Then I definitely gotta get you to bed! You don't wanna be late for big kid school!" He laid her on his side tucking her in and giving her a kiss on the forehead. Harmony squealed and slightly scrambled around before smiling at Connor. "Goodnight ladybug." Harmony smiled. "Good night-night Daddy!"
Connor walked back out into the livingroom and picked up his phone."Sorry I had to do something." When she spoke again she had a slight giggle in her tone. "Soooo. Who was that Connor?" Connor sighed. "Nobody." Connor responded quickly. "Anyway I gotta get ready for work soon. Bye." Connor hung up before she could respond.

When Evan finally got up and walked into the kitchen Connor snaked his arms around his husbands torso. Evan (insertstepstomakecoffeehereidontknowhowidontdrinkcoffee) and patted Connor's hands.
"Hey Evie, good morning. Uh. You might not like this but... Iaccidentallytoldmymomthatwecouldhaveafamilydinneroverhere. I'm sorry!" Connor hid his face in the crook of Evan's neck.
Evan stopped stirring his coffee. "Oh. Good I thought you broke something– I mean, oh no we're all gonna die!! Ahem, I'm sure it'll be fine. They know me right? We've been friends for a while." Evan placed his hands on Connor's cheeks and rubbed his thumb
"Yeah but they don't know we dated, or got married or have a kid!" Connor huffed leaning into Evan's touch
"We'll get through it." Evan gentle pressed his lips against Connor's and the two stood there for a while.
"Oh shit, I have to pick up Harmony!" Evan kissed Connor's cheek and rushed out.
Connor placed a hand on the place where Evan had kissed his cheek. He felt like a lovesick teenager again.
He remembered their first kiss. It was in this house, the house Heidi gave them when she passed. Up in Evan's childhood bedroom. Right where Harmony's is right now.
He missed Heidi.

Almost a week of preparing for the dinner and it was finally time for the dreaded family dinner.
"Alright Harmony. What do you do if the tall man makes you scared or we start yelling?" Connor asked, well he asked again, a lot.
"Grab aunt Zozo's hand and go upstairs to my room and watch my little pony with her!" She smiled.
Connor had explained this to Zoe too. If Larry scared Harmony or everyone started yelling Zoe was supposed to usher Harmony upstairs and the two are supposed to watch my little pony.
"Good job, baby girl!" Connor lifted Harmony up and spun her around a little. "Wee! Wait Daddy! You're gonna mess up my dress!" She giggle-shrieked. Connor set her down and fixed her dress.
"Hey Evan! Come here." Connor called. Evan walked down the stairs quickly. "What's up?" Evan wore a dark blue dress shirt and it made him look absolutely stunning. Connor would have made a very sexual joke if Harmony wasn't here, but you gotta keep the seven-year-old innocent for as long as possible.
"Look at our little princess!" Connor said while Harmony spun around in her light purple dress. A dark purple bow in her braided hair, thanks to Connor's amazing husband, and a whole bunch of kandi that said a lot of different things, many of them saying Rarity or the other names of the mane six.
"You look so pretty, honey!" Evan kneeled down to fix Harmony's bow.
"Alright. So when did you say your parents and Zoe are gonna be here?" Evan said standing.
"In like thirty minutes." Connor checked his watch.
"That gives us enough time to play!" Harmony squealed and scrambled up the stairs, on all fours, "it's the better way of getting up stairs, Evan." Connor had told him after she started doing it.
"Of course, why didn't I think of that!?"
–
The door bell rung as the three sat on the floor in front of the couch.
"Do wanna get it or should I?" Evan asked.
Connor stood and whiped his legs off. "I'll get it. You guys should get ready." Connor quickly made his way over to the door. He hesitated and took a deep breath before opening the door.
There stood Cynthia, with a curled bob? And Larry, still looked like Larry.
Zoe dyed her hair again. His 'weird' little sister. This time it was a blue that faded into purple and instead of the millions of spike bracelets she usually had, her arms were covered in a bright rainbow array of kandi.
"Hi Connor!" Cynthia started beaming and reached forward to hug Connor. He just stood there while Cynthia hugged him. Larry walked in next. If Connor was still in high-school he wouldn't have stared Larry dead in the eyes. He was a coward when it came to his father. Zoe walks in after him. She and Connor do their little handshake thingy and Connor walks into the kitchen.
"Did you make this yourself Connor?" Cynthia asks staring at the food.
"Not alone but I did help-" Connor turned around and heard Evan shouting "We saved her!" And then Harmony cheering. Connor whipped his head around and tilted his head.
Connor smiled as Evan walked out with Harmony holding the missing Lyra Heartstrings toy. "Hey you guys found her!" Connor kissed the top of Harmony's head and kissed Evan on the lips quickly. Harmony shouted a little "EW!" And stuck her tongue out. Evan, Connor and Zoe all laughed.
Evan set Harmony in the chair next to Zoe and Evan sat next to Harmony. Connor sat next to Evan. "Well, uh, I guess I should introduce you guys." Connor took a deep breath. "This little princess right here is Harmony. My daughter." Harmony grinned wide and waved at her grandparents. Cynthia's eyes widened and a sort of smile-frown grew on her face. "I-i have a grandbaby?" She asked taking a tissue from her purse and whipping her eye.
"Yeah.." Larry was staring at Harmony, and Connor swore a small, faint, barely there smile crossed his face.
"Ahem.. And this." He gestured to Evan, who waved and smiled softly. "Evan, my husband of Seven years." Zoe gasped. "Seven years?! Already! I swore you guys were married yesterday." Evan rolled his eyes.
"Seven years?" Larry spoke up and thought for a moment. "So you two got married at eighteen?" There was a barely there hint of disgust.
"Yep! Happily married for seven years!" Connor smiled and gave everyone dinner.
"How old are you, Harmony?" Cynthia asks. Harmony looks up and thinks for a long moment before starting to count on her fingers. Zoe whispers something into her ear. "Seven!" She smiled proudly. Cynthia smile dropped slightly and she turned to Larry.
-
"So Evan. How long were you and my son dating before you got married?" Larry asked setting his fork down.
Evan looked up. "Two years."
Connor looked up at Larry as well.
"So, tell me this Connor. You had a relationship for two years and never told me or your mother?" Larry had that scowl on his face, that same fucking scowl.
"Yeah." Connor stayed calm and just looked him dead in the eyes. "Why, is that a problem for you?" Both Zoe and Evan's eyes widened. Cynthia plastered the same smile for when she was panicking.
"Actually it is." Larry scowled. "I thought I was okay, only have one gay kid, but no. You ruined it. Even after all these years you still bring shame on our Murphy name." Larry growled. Zoe stood up and grabbed Harmony by the hand and the two walked up the stairs.
Connor heard Harmony's door shut and he turned his head back towards the people in front of him.
"Oh well good think I'm not a Murphy anymore. Y-ya know. To be honest, I never felt like I was a Murphy to begin with." Connor added a dry, hollow laugh to the end. He felt Evan pull his hand into his.
Larry rolled his eyes and scoffed. "When you're mother told me you agreed to this I hoped you would have matured a bit. Let me guess are you still battling your 'depression'? Have you stopped your little cries for attention yet?"
Connor actually stopped breathing. His suicide attempts haven't been brought up by anyone since before Heidi died...
Connor coughed and stared at the table he couldn't move, he was so fucking stupid for letting the source of all of his trauma into their house. He should've asked Evan first. He shouldn't have let these people into their house where their daughter could see or hear everything. He's so fucking stupid, Larry's always been right. Connor will always be the suicidal, psychopath, fucking faggot, tranny that brings shame upon Larry's golden last name. He should've just ended it that first day of senior yea–
Connor was pulled from his trance by Evan, Evan fucking Hansen, the man raised by the nicest lady in all of New York, jumped up and slammed his hands on the table.
"The two of you better get the out of my house. No one talks to my husband like that. Get out." Evan almost growled
"He was just asking!" Cynthia tried to reason.
"Get out."
"But-"
"Out."
"Connor, tell him that Larry was just askin-"
"I don't cared what he was asking! Get out!!" Evan screamed and pointed at the two.
Cynthia and Larry gathered their shit and took off.
And they were gone. Connor hoped he'd never have to see them again. Evan was at his side humming and rubbing soft circles into his back as he slowly sat Connor down on the chair. Zoe raced down the stairs.
"What happened?" Zoe asked.
Evan cringed at the volume in her tone.
"Larry brought up Connor's, uh." He looked towards the top of the stairs before putting two fingers on his wrist and made a slight slicing move. "You know." Zoe nodded and stepped back.
"I don't know why he does that! It's so.." Zoe bit her lip and grumbled not finding the right words.
Evan sighed as Connor stopped crying and started sniffing. "I've never understood that man Zoe. I'm surprised he actually used Connor's name this time."
Harmony raced down the stairs and screamed. "DADDY! What happened!? Are you okay?!" Harmony wrapped her small arms around Connor's arm and torso.
"Daddy's alright. Just not-so-nice memories. I'll be okay." Connor lifted Harmony into his lap and hugged his daughter back.
-
The next morning Zoe got downstairs before Connr woke up.
When he walked out into the kitchen Zoe was looking down typing and smiling at her phone.
"So, Zoe."
"Yeah?" Connor stirred his coffee.
"Do ya got a girlfriend yet?" Zoe spit out her drink and started coughing as Connor cackled behind her like a dieing hyena.
