What he had meant to say was "Lacey, will you go out with me?" but thanks to nerves, it sounded more like...
"willyougooutwithmepleasethankyou-"
Lacey blinked. Crispin had clammed up and talked way too quickly for her to catch what he said (and it wasn't like this was the first time it had happened) but it sounded like...
Her eyes narrowed. There was no way...right? "Slow down, Crispin," she said. "I didn't catch that."
Face as red as his hair, Crispin shook his head rigorously before unveiling a white paper box from behind his back and offered it to her. Opening it up revealed a pink cake with the words "Will you go out with me?" written on it with frosting.
Lacey squealed. "Oh that's just too cute!" she exclaimed. "Of course I would! I was wondering when you'd finally get to asking!"
Crispin froze at the realization. She knew?! he thought in a panic before promptly fainting on the spot. Thankfully, the cake didn't splatter on the ground.
A short distance behind Lacey, who was looking at Crispin in concern, Kieran lowered his "You can do it Crispin!" banner and facepalmed.
"That wasn't how it was meant to go..."
