Chapter 1: Damage

Chapter Text

Before you say anything,

It was an accident. I didn’t mean to- I don’t know what came over me!

The pure shock comes over me as soon as I see it. As soon as I see… his… lifeless corpse. I really didn’t mean it- I think. Did I mean it? Am I just lying to myself? I stand there for a second, staring at him. His torn body. The damage I had done. Everything just happened so fast.

What am I supposed to do? What will they think of me? They already compare me to that Steve guy, what next? Put me in handcuffs? Metag was in handcuffs for something they couldn’t control. What will they do when they find out I MURDERED someone!? Will they murder me too!? I can’t let that happen, I can’t let anything happen!

I’ve got to get out of here. I can’t let them see me. They’ll find out eventually if I stay. And before I know it, I’m walking. Running? Should I run? I might be suspicious. Stop running. Just walk. The air is cold and it’s dark out. Why did he think the best time to apologize was now? No time to think. Just get out of here.

I probably should’ve disposed of the body. Oh no. What if someone sees it?! They could use it as evidence! What if they suspect me? How would they suspect me...?

Stop spiraling Poppy. Just breathe. Calm down. I need to go somewhere, just get away from him. Where to go…

I could go to the restaurant. I don’t exactly have a place to stay… would it be empty right now? It’s late, but there might be people who eat late.

I turn around on my heel, making a beeline for the restaurant. The atmosphere is uneasy. The grass crunches under my shaky steps. It feels scarily easy to breathe. It’s like my chest hurts with every cold breath. The walk feels like hours, the guilt weighing heavy on my shoulders.

I walk up to the building. It, for some reason, has no door. I’ve always been a little confused on why that is.

I try my best to not look nervous. I hope I’m not failing at that. The last thing I want is to draw attention to myself. I’ve already got everyone here suspicious of me. Now they have a reason to. There’s a couple people there, but they aren’t focused on me. That’s good, I hope. There’s no one at the front to check me in or ask if “I have a reservation.” I’d assume that means no one is in the kitchen, either.

I sit at a booth near the back of the restaurant. The Cherries are mopping up a spill, but they’re focused on themselves.

Calm down… just calm down. I use this second to breathe. It’s only a matter of time before someone finds out. It’s the calm before the storm. I know what’s going to happen. He’s going to get found, and the hope of redeeming myself is out the window. I just need to… calm down.
