Work Text:
Flashing lights bursting all around, uncontrollable shaking, panicking people. That’s what Akaashi saw on a normal Tuesday night at a train station.
He saw a white and blacked haired man, who was seeming to have a seizure. The man seemed no over then 25. Relatively young. He could vividly see the panic on people’s face growing, seeing people frightened wasn’t comfortable for Akaashi, the only normal thing to do this time was to save the stranger.
He dropped his bag, immediately running over, yelling calmly on what to do. He turned the shaking man over on his side, his mouth facing the ground. The male’s eyes were wide and golden, he seemed frightened as well.
Akaashi almost, almost found himself flustered.
“Someone start timing this, how long has it been?” He asked while actively helping the seizure-induced man.
“It’s been maybe 30 seconds!” A middle aged man yelled as he went to his phone to start a timer.
“Great, let me know if it hits over 5 minutes, does anyone know this man?” He called out blandly.
Akaashi could see out of the corner of his eye, some teenage girls were recording as they laughed. It made him mad, someone’s life was in danger and these people were laughing.
It wasn’t right.
Admittedly, Keiji didn’t know near anything about seizures, he knew you were supposed to time it, bring the person to their side, and make sure it didn’t go over 5 minutes. But nothing else.
What if he was missing something, something key.
These thoughts crowded his mind, and before he knew it, the man stopped shaking. He rose slowly.
The man who had started the timer paused it, “2 minutes and 34 seconds!” He yelled.
Akaashi nodded in reply and did some quick mental math, before focusing his attention back to the rising man.
The golden-eyed boy awoke confused, looking around the train station like a lost puppy, his backpack and it’s contents spilled on the ground.
“Where am I?” He asked softly, even with the softness of his tone, the boy’s voice was much more bold then Akaashi had predicted.
“You currently in a Tokyo train station, station B. You sir, just had a seizure, measuring a time of 3 minutes and 4 seconds.”
The boy nodded slowly, looking around at his spilled items. Suddenly, Keiji could’ve swore he heard some sort of pop coming from the boy. In an instance, the man said “OH!” Very loudly and immediately went to grab his belongings including his dropped phone.
Akaashi got up, not wanting to disturb the man. People slowly began to walk away, seeing as the commotion was over.
Just as the black-haired boy was about to leave, he could hear the man he’d just helped call out.
“I’m Kotarou Bokuto! Thank you for helping me!”
“I am Keiji Akaashi, I hope you get well.”
And at that, Keiji walked over to his bag, grabbing it and leaving.
Nothing more should come out of that interaction. Is what he would’ve thought if Bokuto wasn’t sitting right across from him at a café not even a half hour later.
Akaashi gave a small look to his pudding-haired friend, trying to indicate that he’d already met this man. His friend noticed, and didn’t care much.
“Uhm.. so… Kuroo-san, this is my roomate—Akaashi— and, shall you introduce me to your friend?”
The boy named Kuroo leaned back in his seat, a sly grin appearing on his face.
“This is Kotarou Bokuto, one of my roomates aswell. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Akaashi, was it?”
Keiji nodded, slightly hoping that Bokuto didn’t recognize him. Afterall, it would make for a little less of an akward interaction.
Akaashi wasn’t quite good with communication after all.
“…Wait a minute! You’re that guy who helped me earlier!”
Kuroo and Kenma’s ears perked up.
“Helped? Mr. CoolestMcCool, what’s up with that?”
Akaashi could hear Kenma whisper something about the nickname of Bokuto to Kuroo, perhaps asking the context of it.
“Oh! I had another one if my seizure thingys, and he helped me!” Bokuto replied in an innocent and cheeky tone.
“Well! Welcome to Bokuto.” Kuroo said, directing his message towards Akaashi.
Keiji nodded, taking a sip from the teacup infront of him. This was certainly NOT the conversation he wanted to have.
“So! ‘Kaashi, however old are ya’?”
“20. And you?”
“Cool! I’m 21, ‘Kaashi-kun!”
“What’s with the nickname, Bokuto?” Kuroo asked.
“I dunno, it felt right. ‘Kaashi-kun’s fine with it, right!~”
Every part of him wanted to say no, considering if he said yes, he’d be indicating that they had some sort of relationship. But something about Bokuto’s face made it impossible to say no. So, he said it was fine. Kuroo wore a surprised look, Kenma wore his normal stotic one. But most importantly, it was as if more light had entered Bokuto’s eyes. And Akaashi, could feel the light getting to him. Surprised by his thoughts, he took another extra-long sip, trying to hide his reddened cheeks.
Kotarou Bokuto sure is one hell of a person.
—————————————
“‘Kaashi-kun! Heyy, Heyy, Heyy!”
Akaashi turned around to see the “owl with frosted tips” running towards him excitedly, he narrowed his eyes. Just why was he so incredibly excited.
“Hello, Bokuto-san,”
It had been a week since the two’s encounter at the train station and the coffee shop, they exchanged contact information, and they’d planned to meet up on this day. To do what? Not quite known. Akaashi didn’t care much for what to do, and Bokuto was horrible at deciding stuff. To Keiji’s surprise, Kotarou was surprisingly non-social, apparently, his only friends were his roomates. Certainly interesting.
“So! ‘Kaashi-kun~ whatdoya wanna do?~”
“It’s up to you, Bokuto-san.”
The black-haired boy had never faced someone like the “owl” infront of him before, it was certainly an interesting phenomenon.
“Can we go to an aracde?(!)”
Akaashi raised an eyebrow, weren’t arcades mean’t for children, nonetheless, he agreed. And the two got on a train, heading for the station that was closest to the arcade.
—————————
“‘Kaashi-kun! How many times have you been to an arcade.”
Akaashi looked up at Bokuto at his question, he somehow already had a plush snake wrapped around his neck. They’d only gotten there 10 minutes ago.
“Maybe a little over 5 times, why do you ask?” He replied in his neutral tone.
“Oooh waowww! That’s a lot!”
“Not really.”
“This is my first time!”
That made Akaashi surprised, he hadn’t expected such a bright boy like Bokuto to have never been to an arcade. The number one childrens place.
“Really? How come?”
“Welll, ‘Kaashi-kun!~” He said with a big level of cheekiness. “I have epilepsy! So my parents never let me do anything normal.”
Bokuto spoke, and Akaashi swore he saw him slowly deflating as he continued his sentence.
“That’s disappointing, I’ll make sure your time is well spent.”
Bokuto’s eyes lit up again, nodding like a little baby he grabbed Akaashi’s arm and began to drag him to every game in sight.
After winning an unholy amount of prizes, the two sat down. Akaashi MUCH more tired then the Owl across him.
“‘Kaashi-kun! ‘Kaashi-kun! That was so fun!”
“I was worried you were going to have a seizure…” Akaashi spoke out of breath.
Bokuto took a sip out of his cup, “I usually get seizures when I’m scared! So I was fine.”
“Huh…I thought epilepsy was caused by flashing lights?”
Bokuto put a finger up, “Not all! My type isn’t like that! My type is I get seizures whenever I get scared!”
Akaashi nodded slowly, more information about epilepsy he guessed.
“Well, is there anywhere else you want to go, Bokuto-san?”
The owl nodded energetically, “Yea! Can we go to a haunted house?”
“No….”
Bokuto pouted, and the two got up, Akaashi carrying most of his new friend’s bags.
They were maybe 2 blocks down the street before Bokuto paused, his eyes becoming dialated.
“Bokuto-san?” Akaashi called out.
The owl then fell to the floor, starting to shake.
Akaashi quickly started a timer on his phone, and he turned Bokuto to his side.
Staring down at the boy, he was scared. Perhaps scared the seizure would go on longer than 5 minutes.
He wondered why he was afraid of that possibility. He barely knew Bokuto.
After exactly 1 minute and 54 seconds, the shaking stopped, and Bokuto rose again. Giving a childish and confused look to Akaashi.
“Bokuto-san, you had a seizure. 1 minute 54 seconds, what were you afraid of?”
Bokuto shook his head, shotting right back up, Akaashi followed.
“It was nothin’, ‘Kaashi-kun!”
Akaashi nodded slightly, still trying to think of reasons as to why Bokuto got scared.
Nonetheless, the two continued to walk down the street. Akaashi acting like an unpaid tour guide for Bokuto.
“So, Bokuto-san, why were you scared at the train station?” Akaashi asked, attempting to seem innocent.
“Hmm…. I was on my phone and I had gotten scared because my favorite manga had a HUGE plot twist and it scared me.” Bokuto replied cheerfully.
Akaashi’s breath grew faster, “Seizures come that easy?”
“I guess so.” Bokuto replied solemnly yet cheerfully.
Akaashi put a hand on his new friend’s shoulders, “Don’t die.” He said more like a plead then a request.
The owl grinned, “I’ll stay around for ya!”
————————-
“I had a seizure today.”
All the people whom Bokuto lived with turned to him.
“Eh? How come?” A light-brown haired man asked.
Bokuto shook his head, “I don’t know why! I was hanging out with ‘Kaashi-kun and I suddenly got scared he’d hate me someday!”
The room’s vibe went slightly darker.
Kuroo gave Bokuto a slight tackle to the couch, “Oh when has you, the ever so brave and awesome Bokuto gotten scared of people hating him?”
Bokuto struggled a bit to get out laughing as he did “I dunno!”
A simple man with darker brown hair gave a soft smile, “If you ever need us we’ll be be here.”
Kotarou grinned as he shoved Kuroo off, “Thanks!”
—————————
Akaashi boarded the train that was heading to his home while definitely overthinking what he’d said to Bokuto. To him, he seemed vulnerable and he hated it.
Typically they’d board the train together and it wouldn’t leave Akaashi alone with his thoughts. However Akaashi had to stop by a crafts store to get some colored pencils.
Once he’d arrived home he walked to his bedroom, shut the door, and dropped his shopping bag to the floor. He took out his phone, staring at the contact he had saved has Bokuto Kotarou.
He clicked to edit it and he deleted the contact name.
Akaashi’s fingers moved across his phone and before he even realized Bokuto was now saved as his name with a heart next to it.
He couldn’t quite put his finger on why he’d done this but it felt so right.
“Akaashi.”
The boy jolted up and opened his door to see his roomate.
“I made cookies, want to watch a movie and eat them?” Kenma gave a small smile.
Akaashi nodded yes and left his phone as such there alone.
About 2 hours later, Kenma and Akaashi were left sobbing their eyes out.
“These movies should have a warning!” Akaashi whined slightly.
“I’m never going to watch romance movies again.” Kenma replied, a tear slipping down his already wet cheeks.
It wad around 11 pm, Kenma and Akaashi hugged eachother out of the pain of the romance movie and went to their separate bedrooms.

Bokuto <3: “‘Kaashiiiii-kunnnnm!!”
Bokuto <3: “Akaashiiiiiiiiii!!!!”
Bokuto <3: “Akaashi?”
Delivered, 10:48 pm
—-
Akaashi jumped seeing these messages and immediately replied.
—-
Akaashi: “Bokuto, hello. Sorry I was watching a movie”
Sent 11:13 pm
Bokuto <3: “‘KAASHII!”
Akaashi: “Hello, did you need something?”
—-
Akaashi could feel his heart rate accelerating.
—-
Bokuto <3: “I’m so very bored. Today was so fun and now it’s just boring!”
Akaashi: “It’s okay, Bokuto.”
Bokuto <3: “Can we hang out again soon :)))”
Akaashi: “Sure.”
Bokuto <3: “YAY! ^^.”
Akaashi: “What would you want to do?”
Bokuto <3: “Uhhhh, I dunno. Anything with you is fun!”
Akaashi: “I see.”
Bokuto <3: “Well I’m happier now knowing I’ll see you again. I love you ‘Kaashi-kun! Goodnight! Don’t let the bed bugs bite ;D.”
Akaashi: “Goodnight, sleep well.”
——
Akaashi near damn threw his phone across the room.
His heart was racing, his cheeks were red. He felt vulnerable. Just what the hell was this man doing to Akaashi!?
He groaned and stuff his face in his pillow.
He never felt this weak.
——————
Things weren’t much different on Bokuto’s end, afterall he was met with a feeling he could only describe as love. But it was different.
His chest felt tight, and his heart was racing.
To Bokuto, Akaashi was gorgeous.
His short black hair was silky and looked soft. His dark blue eyes were striking and whenever he looked Bokuto in his eyes he felt he was being read like a book. Akaashi’s slightly tan skin seemed golden.
Bokuto could tell something was different. But he didn’t know what it could be.
A truly unfamiliar experience.
————————-
Akaashi was simply walking to the new class he was taking just for fun, art. It was a class about learning the basics of drawing. Basically, for people who usually draw scribbles it’s to help them draw less scribbley.
He walked with his headphones covering his ears. He hadn’t even noticed his bag being stolen.
“HEY! YOU GIVE THAT BACK!!”
Akaashi jolted behind him to see the person whom was yelling oh so loudly.
Instead he’d seen the person whom was recently constantly on his mind holding a man by the collar, the man being held had Akaashi’s bag.
He rushed over, “Bokuto-san!”
The man was pleading for the owl looking man to let him go.
“GIVE ME THE BAG.” Bokuto yelled, as scary and terrifying as he’d ever been.
The man yelped and dropped the bag then ran away.
Bokuto shook his head and handed Akaashi his bag, “Hi ‘Kaashi-kun!”
Akaashi greeted the boy, thanking him as he did.
“Hey ‘Kaashi! Whatcha doing around this area? This place is for the art majors like me!”
Akaashi was surprised Bokuto was an art major. But giving it a little more thought it made sense.
“I’m taking a beginning art class for fun.” Akaashi replied.
“Oohh! Nice! Wait, don’t tell me it’s Mr. Tengen’s beginning art class!”
Keiji smiled lightly, “It is, was that your teacher?”
“No.” Kotarou jumped with excitement, “I’m a teacher assistant for that class! The 9:00 one, right?”
Akaashi nodded, caught off guard. Bokuto wrapped an arm around his dear friend’s arm and began to skip “Let’s go together!” He cheered.
———————
“I AM A GOD!”
Akaashi shot Bokuto a look from across the classroom at this strange teacher.
“YOU ALL ARE MORONS!” The teacher yelled.
“Erm sir, I don’t think that’s legal.”
A boy chimed.
“Get out my classroom.”
Mr. Tengen replied to which the boy dragged himself out.
“MY NAME IS TENGEN UZUI! YOU SHALL REFER TO ME AS MR. TENGEN!”
The students slowly nodded.
“This is my teacher assistant, Kotarou Bokuto.” Mr. Tengen pointed at the owl. Bokuto got up and waved, smiling brightly.
Uzui’s face went serious, “See here Bokuto is a great kid. So don’t scare him or flash any lights up in his face since he has epilepsy. ‘Kay?”
The classes nodded and Kotarou stepped up, “Today we will be doing an almost assessment assignment! Draw a minimum of 5 things you like, Mr. Tengen has his own paper as an example.”
Akaashi looked at Bokuto wide-eyed. He’d seen him always so bubbly, never mature like he was currently.
Mr. Tengen slapped a drawing on the whiteboard.
“THIS IS MY PAPER! It has my three gorgeous wives, my best-bud, my son and daughter Tanjiro and Nezuko, aren’t they adorable!”
“YOU HAVE THREE WIVES!?” Another boy yelped.
“What of it?” The teacher replied.
“Anyhow, there’s jewelry and then a facepaint kit.” Uzui spoke, “NOW GET TO WORK!”
Akaashi looked down at his desk at the blank paper, he began to grab his pencil and sketch.
What did he like? He didn’t know. Bokuto slid next to him with his own paper.
“Bokuto-san, why do you have a paper?” Akaashi questioned.
“Just for fun!” Bokuto replied cheerfully.
Akaashi racked through his brain. He found the thought process of others interesting, he liked owls and cats. He enjoyed listening to music. And he liked Bokuto.
Akaashi shook his head, he couldn’t draw Bokuto.
Kotarou was staring at Keiji and then sketching, Akaashi noticed and got flustered.
“Bokuto-san? Is something the matter.”
“I’m drawing you! I mean I like you so it’s only right.” Bokuto replied innocently.
Akaashi nodded, his cheeks turning a light pink. Surely Bokuto meant platonically. He himself knew that. Kotarou probably had a girlfriend.
Afterall, even Akaashi whom never found anyone attractive found Bokuto striking. His black and white hair always catching his eye, his dashing golden eyes always made his own knees weak.
“May I draw you aswell then?” Akaashi managed to mumble.
“Go for it!”
At the end of class, Akaashi had finished his drawings. A cat, an owl, a human brain, headphones, and Bokuto.
Bokuto had cotten candy on his paper, a sketchbook, a manga of the title “Measures,”, an arcade machine, and Akaashi.
They turned their papers in and walked out together. Uzui narrowed his eyes staring at the papers, but then threw it into a pile of other papers to grade later, forgetting Bokuto’s wasn’t supposed to be graded.
———————-
Certain research showed that Akaashi was inlove with Bokuto. It however didn’t make sense.
Keiji had never been one to feel this romantic attraction, and he hadn’t know Bokuto for long.
He felt as if he’d known Bokuto since forever even though they’d only met a little over a week ago. Upon more research he found of the term soulmate.
Surely not.
Love was just driving Akaashi insane.
Nothing more.

January 14th, Monday, 2019.
“Today Akaashi was a student in the class I was a teacher assistant for. The class was supposed to start 14 days earlier but Mr. Tengen was sick. Akaashi is so pretty! I couldn’t stop staring at him so I just figured I’d draw him for the project. I feel like I’ve known him forever! I wonder what this means. My heart beats faster and I feel all warm. Akaashi’s hands look nice, will I get more warmth if I hold them?”
Signed, Bokuto
Bokuto wrote in this new journal he was keeping, he had started it when he met Akaashi. It just felt right to keep their memories in a book.
———————
“Daichi! You have a boyfriend?” Kuroo gasped whilst he spoke.
The male suddenly blushed and put his hand on the back of his head. “Yea,” he replied.
“I wouldn’t never assumed your attraction was towards guys!” Oikawa laughed lightly.
“Well, I’ve sorta always knew. I mean when I first layed my eyes on him in highschool I fell for him.”
An “aww” came out of the mouths from all of Daichi’s roomates.
“Well, we should probably clear up our sexualities. Just so we don’t learn them when they finally start dating the love of their life,” Kuroo smirked at Daichi indicating him and his new boyfriend at that last part.
“Well, to put a title on it I guess I’m bisexual, I’ve liked girls but I really like Sugawara, my boyfriend.” Daichi smiled.
“I’ll go next! I’m bisexual also!” Oikawa stuck a tounge out the corner of his mouth.
“We already knew that you liked men,” Kuroo laughed as Oikawa flipped him off.
“I’m pansexual.” Kuroo spoke.
The heads turned to Bokuto.
“Hm? Me? Well I don’t really know….”Bokuto replied.
“I mean, I don’t know what it’s like!” Kotarou defended.
“Well, the easiest way to tell is when your heart beats faster around them, and when you feel…complete?” Daichi explained.
“Also warm! You feel very warm with their presence. That’s the only word I can use to describe it.” Oikawa chimed in.
“Huh, I do feel that way!”
A collective “Ooohh~” came from the room.
“So I…like this person?” Bokuto asked, confused.
Oikawa nodded.
“Huh.”
———————-
“‘Kaashi-kunnn!!! Where do you want to go?”
About a week later Bokuto found himself across from Keiji once more.
The date was January 21st.
“How about… a pottery studio? One recently opened and you get to make your own pottery.” Akaashi replied.
Bokuto nodded cheerfully and grabbed Akaashi’s arm and began to run in the totally wrong direction!
“B-Bokuto-san! This. Er.. This is the wrong way!!” Akaashi spoke almost like he was yelling from how startled he got.
Bokuto had grabbed his arm before. Why now did he get so shy?
“Ah… sorry!” Bokuto stopped running but didn’t let go of Akaashi’s arm.
Keiji slipped his own arm out to point in the right direction, “It’s a 2 minute walk, you go to the left and then to the right.”
“Gotcha!” Bokuto spoke excitedly.
The pottery studio was a warm and welcoming place. The two made their way inside to be greeted by a black haired girl.
“Hello! My name is Suzuki! Thank you for coming to our studio. What is it that you wanted?”
Her voice was soft, definitely someone good for Bokuto, Akaashi thought to himself.
“Hey, hey, hey Suzuki! Me and my friend wanted to make some pottery!” The owl spoke in his mature tone as he did at the class.
“Perfect! Please come this way.” The girl, Suzuki guided the pair to a 2 person station where they each got a lump of wet clay, in the middle of them was a big water cup.
“The directions are on the station’s wall! Please let me know if you need any assistance.” Suzuki spoke before leaving.
“So, would you want to get started?” Akaashi asked.
“Yes!” Bokuto replied and thus they began.
Forming the object on the spinning wheel was a difficult task, luckily for them there were clear instructions on how to make a basic pot. You get some water, that’s the first step on the instructions infront of them.
“Seems you first get your hands wet,” Akaashi spoke, unknowingly imitating the softness in the girl’s voice.
Akaashi put his hands in the water, only to feel something else. Bokuto’s hands. His chest became tight, and a hot shot flew up his hands.
He bit the inside of his lip as he smeared the water on his clay.
Kotarou found himself staring at Akaashi’s slender hands as he shaped the pot, his insides felt funny. He was so gentle, he wondered how Akaashi’s hands would feel on his face.
———-
“Bokuto-san, have you finished making the pot?”
The owl attempted to wipe some clay off his face. “Probably!”
Surprisingly enough, their pots looked quite nice.
“I can go get Susumi!” Bokuto cheered. As he walked over to the front he overheard the girl whom helped them and another girl worker.
“Oh my gosh. The boy with blue eyes was so attractive!” Suzuki blabbered.
“Hey hey hey! Me and my friend finished our pots, what do we do now? And also..” Bokuto cleared his throat as he shot the girl a smile, “I hear you think Akaashi is cute?” He was burning with an unfamiliar feeling.
Suzuki covered her face and blushed, “Ah! You heard?”
“I can give your number to him if you write it down once we leave!” Kotarou suggested.
Suzuki’s eyes lit up and she nodded excitedly, “Yes! Thank you!” She them wrote her number down on a sheet of paper and told Bokuto to give it to him only once they left. Bokuto agreed and walked with Suzuki back to the pod where they were sat.
———
Once leaving Bokuto handed Akaashi the peice of paper Suzuki had handed him.
“What’s this?” Akaashi asked.
Bokuto smiled sweetly, “Open and see~”
Keiji reluctantly opened the paper and once he saw it’s contents he immediately crumpled it up and threw it in the trash.
“I wouldn’t want to give her false hope.” Akaashi explained to the owl’s shocked expression.
“Well, did you have fun?” Keiji questioned, changing the topic.
Bokuto hesitated. “As always!”
——————————
January 21st, Monday, 2019.
“Today me and ‘Kaashi-kun went to a pottery studio! It was fun making the pots but being with him made it even better! Although, this girl Susumi I think her name is had a crushhh on Akaashi. I think she’s straight. But she wrote her number down on a peice of paper and when I handed it to Akaashi he threw it away! I wonder why. She seemed good for him. Recently I heard of the concept of Valentine’s Day. Apparently it’s a common day where people say their feelings to who they love. I think I might tell Akaashi how I feel during then! I’m both scared and excited but I think I really love him. I want to hug him so bad! Maybe I will!”
Signed, Bokuto.

“Kenma, want to watch a movie?”
Kenma gave a small smile once more, “It better not be an annoyingly sad one!”
And yet again, 2 hours later. The usually cold looking people were sobbing.
“I swear I thought it was a happy movie!” Akaashi cried as Kenma tried smacking him with a pillow.
“Didn’t you read the summary!” Kenma roared only to be interrupted by an incoming call.
The blonde boy turns to look at his phone, it was Kuroo.
Akaashi attempted to take a peak at the contact name Kenma has for him, he already knows of the slight romantic tension they have but not much else, he however fails.
“I should take this, but I’m beating you up later.” With a click on his phone Kenma picks up, “What’s up.”
Akaashi doesn’t hear much, but he sees Kenma’s face drop. “I’m coming over.”
He grabs his keys, Kenma afterall lives relatively close to Kuroo’s apartment.
“Akaashi I have to go.”
“Wait! Why? Is Kuroo-san okay?” Akaashi asks, worried.
Kenma’s face goes stern and he’s alreafy halfway out the door. “He says bad thoughts.”
The boy shuts the door and runs away leaving Akaashi and his tear stained cheeks alone. His judgment decides that it’s best to call Bokuto.
He pulls his phone out and clicks the button in order to call Bokuto.
“Hey, Bokuto-san.”
“Hng…Hey hey hey ‘Kaashi-kun…”
Akaashi could hear the sleepiness in Bokuto’s voice.
“Is everything alright at your apartment?”
“Uhhh, I think so. I mean ev’ryone’s just asleep right now, it’s 1:09 AM afterall.”
“Oh, alright.”
“Why do you ask?”
“Well, Kenma suddenly rushed out after getting a call from Kuroo. I’m sure it’s nothing though. Please don’t check.”
“Whatever you say ‘Kaashi….”
“Alright then.”
“Hey Akaashi?”
“Yes Bokuto-san?”
“Can I come over?”
There was silence for a moment before Akaashi replied. “If you want, it’s about a five minute walk.”
“I hear Kenma coming in by the way…”
“Good.”
“Well, I’ll come. See you.”
Bokuto hung up the phone and left Akaashi wondering why he was coming over. Nonetheless he waited and low and behold 5 minutes later the “Owl” was at his door.
“Hey hey hey ‘Kaashi-kun…”
Bokuto spoke as he slumped into Akaashi’s arms.
“I was having a nightmare.” Bokuto stated.
“Did you have a seizure?” Akaashi asked, feeling a mix of curiosity and worry.
“No. Whenever this would happen when I was little my mom would cuddle me untill I fell asleep.”
What exactly was Bokuto implying Akaashi wondered as he led Kotarou in and towards his room.
He layed Bokuto on his bed only to be met with a wave of shock when Bokuto dragged him down.
…
“‘Kaashi-kun.. can you hug me?” Kotarou had spoke with such innocence it was surprising.
Akaashi’s breath became fast. This possibility hadn’t even come to his mind. The man below him seemed so vulnerable and weak. It was just a favor. It would mean nothing. Akaashi convinced himself as he reluctantly wrapped his arms around Bokuto.
Bokuto had led out a small hum of victory and joy. He leaned into the hug.
“I love you Akaashi.”
“Or.. is the word inlove? I’m not sure.”
Bokuto’s face squished into the pillow as Keiji’s eyes went fully open, he didn’t believe it. It was surely just some sleepy blabbering.
Soon enough Bokuto had fallen asleep, he snored softly contrary to how Akaashi had assumed. They were on their side now, afterall it’d be difficult to sleep with someone right on top of you. Akaashi ran his hand through Bokuto’s hair, his face was bright red and it showed in the moonlight of the night. He himself fell asleep pretty quickly after that, rethinking Bokuto’s words over and over.
——————
Akaashi woke up to the sun shining in his face, it didn’t quite make sense afterall he was typically on the side where the sun didn’t shine. It was 10 AM, he had slept in.
Akaashi got up, his baggy shirt was slightly falling off but that was the usual when he woke up.
“Akaashi,” he heard his roommate say as he left his bedroom.
“Yea? Sorry I slept in, Kenma.” Akaashi replied.
“‘Kaashi-kun!”
Keiji almost flinched, “Bokuto-san? What…what are you doing here?”
“Eh? You don’t remember?” Kotarou asked sadly.
“He slept over last night apparently, Akaashi can’t remember anything past 12 AM every night so anything that happens just leaves him.” Kenma explained to Akaashi, then to Bokuto.
“It’s some sort of weird trauma thing?” Keiji cleared.
“Ah. I see.” Bokuto spoke, clearly disappointed.
Akaashi nodded as he went to go brush his teeth. Soon as he left, Kenma started up.
“Something happened between you two didn’t it?”
“Well.” Bokuto replied sheepishly, not quite being able to finish his sentence.
“If you have something you have to say to Akaashi. You should say it before it’s too late.” Kenma suggested.
January 22nd, Tuesday, 2019. Only 24 more days until Valentine’s Day and when Bokuto would confess properly. He thought to himself.
Akaashi came back outside and asked Kenma what was for breakfast. He didn’t know why but he couldn’t quite look Bokuto in the eye.
“Bokuto-san, do you have classes today?” Akaashi asked.
“Nope! It’s a free day for me!” The owl smiled ear to ear.
“Lucky! I have an 1:00 PM class today, it’s a 2 hour lecture.” Akaashi whined.
Bokuto nodded sympathetically, “Well, I should probably leave, Kuroo must be worried. His daily morning includes tackling me so he must be going crazy!”
“Goodbye, see you.”
“Byebye ‘Kaashi-kun! Bye Kenma!”
Bokuto walked out the door and asked soon as he was gone Akaashi slumped over.
“Akaashi, what’s wrong?” Kenma asked, partially worried.
“I can tell something happened last night. But it’s annoying me to death not being able to remember!” Keiji replied.
Kenma hummed for a moment, “Well the best way to learn is to ask isn’t it?”
“I guess so,” Akaashi agreed, “Oh, is Kuroo-san okay?”
“He is alright.” Kenma responded quickly, clearly not willing to touch further on the topic.
“Good to hear.”
———————
It had been about 2 days with no contact with Bokuto, January 24th. It felt lonely, oh so lonely to Akaashi.
Typically Bokuto would text him first, excited to chat. Now his only notifications were from the Duolingo he no longer used.
Should he text Bokuto? Should he call him. Should he go over to his apartment to see what was wrong!?
Akaashi settled on the first option, pulling out his phone and typing a simple “Hi.”
2 days felt like a lifetime without Bokuto. A sure of hell boring one. He knew there was no way he could live without Bokuto.
———————-
Akaashi: “Hi.”
Bokuto <3: “Hey.”
———————-
Bokuto was acting different, Akaashi noticed and noted inside his head.
———————-
Akaashi: “How’s it going? It’s felt like forever since we talked, lol.”
Bokuto <3: “Oh, sorry. I’m kind of in the hospital. I had a seizure over 5 minutes. Nothing major and I don’t really know the details.”
Akaashi: “What!? What were you afraid of! When… are you okay!?”
Bokuto <3: “I’m okay. Happened when I got back to my place after I left yours.”
Akaashi: “Oh. Which hospital are you at?”
Bokuto <3: “I’m at Miyagi hospital. It’s pretty far but it was the only one with availability.”
Akaashi: “I’m coming.”
Bokuto <3: “Really! No need. It’s a 2 hour ride with the train.”
Akaashi: “I don’t care. I need to see you and make sure you’re okay. Give me about 2 hours.”
Bokuto <3: “Akaashi. Really, no need.”

“Bokuto, you have a vistor by the name of Akaashi? Is he permitted to enter.” A kind-looking nurse stated.
Kotarou nodded weakly and Akaashi practically flew in and right next to the cold hospital bed.
“Bokuto-san! Are you okay?” Keiji asked hurriedly.
The owl laughed lightly, “I am, really! I’m supposed to be discharged soon.”
Akaashi breathed a sigh of relief, “Good. I’ll just stay here though..” he spoke as he slowly sunk into the side of his crush’s bed. Keiji slowly dozed off, exhausted from the stress and long road.
Bokuto thought he looked stunning as he heard his slow breaths. The owl couldn’t help but run a hand through his silky hair.
“It is soft.” He thought silently to himself.
“Akaashi.” Bokuto spoke gently, almost soothing.
“I love you. I love you so much.”
So overwhelmed, he blurted everything out.
“It feels like I’ve known you since forever, I miss you when you’re not around. Jesus, ‘Kaashi-kun. It felt so amazing when you hugged me. So warm, it felt like home.”
Bokuto paused and took a deep breath before sleeping once more.
——————-
A couple days had passed, Bokuto was fine, healthy even. And Akaashi was enjoying his love’s presence once more.
It was Febuary 1st, Bokuto found his excitement building up. There were 2 weeks untill he was scheduled to confess. They’d have been buds for a month, but it felt like years to Bokuto.
He loved Akaashi, he loved every bit of him. He was kind and understanding, his hair was soft, his body is warm. His eyes are an indescribable event to Bokuto.
Akaashi Keiji is an indescribable event. One never seen before.
Bokuto adored that.
…
It had become harder for Akaashi to hide his feelings. He had to force his face not to go bright red around Bokuto and he’d always exuse himself to cool his burning face in the bathroom.
To Akaashi, Bokuto was like no one he ever knew.
His black and white hair that stuck up was so incredibly unique he adored it. His golden eyes were that of an owl’s at night, truly incredible. He was bold, like a giant light in the midst of it all. He was caring, considerate.
All of that awesomeness was something Akaashi could not put into words.
And Akaashi loved it more than he had loved anything before.

Febuary 3rd, Sunday, 2019.
“Bokuto-san.”
“Yess ‘Kaashi-kun?” Bokuto smiled sweetly and Keiji almost couldn’t control himself.
He wanted to hug him right there and then.
“This may seem of a strange question, but do you have a girlfriend?” Akaashi asked, jealousy burning in his eyes.
Kotarou laughed aloud, “‘Kaashi-kun, you’re hilarious! I don’t.”
Akaashi had to avoid breathing a sigh of relief.
“It’s not like anyone would have a crush on me anyhow!” Bokuto laughed half-heartedly.
“That’s not true.” Akaashi looked Bokuto in the eyes, “You are an amazing, kind, and totally tubular person. I don’t get how you’d think no one would like that.”
Keiji saw with his own two eyes, Bokuto’s pale skin was turning pink before his eyes. Surely not. Absolutely not. Never in his life would the love of his like him in any other way but platonic. It was his brain playing cruel tricks on him.
“Thank you…” Bokuto mumbled, still seeming pink in Akaashi’s lying eyes.
“Well! Uh! ‘Kaashi-kun. Uhm. Do you have a girlfriend?” The owl asked sheepishly.
Akaashi shook his head no, “I’ve been asked out a few times but…I guess I’m just inlove with someone else.”
He couldn’t believe he’d admitted it, obviously he wouldn’t say who. He’d rather have the pain of not having Bokuto than loosing him after all. He could see Bokuto perk up, perhaps curious, he didn’t however push further.

Febuary 3rd, Sunday, 2019
“‘Kaashi-kun asked me if I had a girlfriend today, I wonder what made him think that? ‘Kaashi-kun likes someone. Granted it’s not me but that’s alright. I enjoy his presence. But I now know the outcome of me confessing. No more Akaashi. But there’s always the slim chance he’ll love me as well. And I think I want to take the chance. I love him so much! I wish Valentine’s Day would come sooner!”
Signed, Bokuto.

February 5th, Tuesday, 2019.
Bokuto was bored in his bed. Even not being by Bokuto’s side for a minute felt empty. Like a life with no purpose. Even texting the person whom he loved so dearly didn’t completely fill that void of emptiness, or perhaps the warmth he craved from Akaashi. “Oh well,” he thought to himself as he pulled out his phone and began to search for Akaashi’s contact.
“‘Kaashiii! :D.” Was the name he had saved for Akaashi.

Bokuto: “‘Kaashi-kunnnnn!!”

Impatiently, Bokuto began to sketch in his book. He began to draw a dove. As that was something that reminded him of Akaashi.
He was beautiful and elegant like a dove.

Bokuto: “What major are you?”
‘Kaashiii! :D: “I’m a psychology major, I took a gap year after highschool through so I’m not nearly as advanced as others my age are.”
Bokuto: “Woah!! Psychology! Coolio!! Even so, you’re still amazing!”
‘Kaashiii! :D: “Thank you, Bokuto-san. Likewise for you :).”

Bokuto began to kick his feet, Akaashi used an emoji! The first time!

“Akaashi.”
The boy next to Akaashi in the passengers seat spoke up almost immediately as they reached a stretch of road.
“Yes, Kenma?”
Akaashi replied.
“You like Bokuto don’t you?” Kenma confronted.
“Of course I do, he’s my friend.” Keiji replied.
“Not. Not in that sense. In the romantic sense.” The cat-like man pushed.
Akaashi blushed slightly, “That obvious?”
“Not really, I just saw your contact name for him.” Kenma replied blandly.
Akaashi sighed, he was embarrassed.
“Really, don’t worry. I won’t tell him or anything.” Kenma reassured, “It just means we are one in the same.”
He laughed lightly as Keiji looked over.
“What do you mean?” Akaashi asked.
“Liking someone you shouldn’t.” Kenma replied.
“Like…Kuroo?”
“I guess I’m pretty obvious.”
———————
“Kenma-san!” An orange haired boy cheered.
He was pretty short, but he had bright orange hair and eyes. He seemed bright and bold. Kind of like Bokuto, Akaashi thought to himself.
“Shoyo, Hello! This is my roomate Keiji Akaashi.” Kenma spoke brightly, he seemed happy around “Shoyo.”
“Nice to meetcha, Akaashi-san! I’m Shoyo Hinata.” Hinata spoke.
Akaashi nodded in response.
“Well, Akaashi. Me and Shoyo are going to go play a bit of volleyball. Are you interested?” Kenma said.
“Not really. I’m not quite the fan of sports. Sorry.” Keiji replied solemnly.
The pair nodded.
“I’ll just walk around, Kenma, let me know when it’s time to go.”
Akaashi then walked out the door and began to walk down the street.
It wasn’t quite a private neighborhood, Hinata lived in an apartment complex near a shopping center. Akaashi had learned by checking his phone. Making his way to the mall his mind drifted to the indescribable person known as Bokuto. Maybe he’d get him something. He reached the mall, it was pretty spacious and had a nostalgic vibe to it. A bookstore, a few thrift stores, Hot Topic, and a market. Akaashi first decided to check out the thrift stores, he enjoyed thrifting after.
After around 10 minutes in one store, he managed to dig up some baggy black jeans and a plaid blue polo shirt. He also managed to find a black beanie that had some elegant stitchings sewn in. He decided to get all three pieces, it had came out around ¥1,500. The other thrift stores didn’t give much luck, he however did find a cool ring at one that he bought for ¥400.
Akaashi decided to check out the bookstore then. Strolling in he made his way to the manga section and his eye caught on that manga Bokuto had drawn on his poster.
“Measures.” Was the title.
He gently picked up the book and began to read the back.
“It had all started in an all boys school in Tokyo. Kaito Yuusuke is a 2nd year student at the “Butai Geijutsu All Boys Highschool,” he is in their band playing clarinet. Kaito has a problem. He has a crush. Rin Takeru is a 2nd year student as well playing trumpet who also has a problem! Rin has never felt love in his life. Through these measures of songs and time will their problems be solved?”
Akaashi hummed, it had seemed interesting. He decided to search it up and the first thing he saw was… FANART OF THE MAIN PAIR KISSING!?
He learned it was a BL manga. He didn’t know Bokuto was into that stuff. He decided to get the manga for Bokuto, Keiji hoped he didn’t have it. Akaashi began to search the aisles a little more and picked up a book called “Bungo Stray Dogs.” Once he was done he went to the front, it had came out to about ¥640.
He hadn’t realized how much time had passed in all the stores, it was 2:03 PM, and they had only gotten there at about 12.
He pulled out his phone to call Kenma.
———————————
Febuary 8th, Friday, 2019.
“Bokuto-san, I have a gift for you.” Akaashi smiled lightly as he handed Bokuto the bag.
Upon opening the gift, Kotarou’s eyes went bright. “EHHH! OH MY GOSH THANK YOU SO MUCH!!” Bokuto began to jump like a little kid and Akaashi laughed a little.
He was adorable, Keiji thought to himself.
Suddenly Bokuto blushed, “Er. Did you read the back. Or search it up..?”
Akaashi nodded and Bokuto sunk to the floor out of embarrassment.
Keiji put a hand on Bokuto’s head, “I don’t care that is BL.” The owl looked up and smiled sweetly, “That’s good..”
“Well! ‘Kaashi-kun. What do you want to do?” Bokuto asked.
“Want to go…Shopping?” Akaashi suggested.
“Ooh! Like where?”
“How about Thrift Stores? There’s a plaza that’s just full of them!” Akaashi’s eyes lit up slightly and Bokuto nodded excitedly!
Upon arriving to the plaza, Akaashi was bursting like a little kid with excitement and he dragged him to the nearest place.
Going in felt like a totally different world. Bokuto hadn’t seen many places in his lifetime so this felt like something totally new. Like an expert Akaashi began to rack the aisles as Bokuto stood dumbfounded.
“Bokuto-san! I think I found a shirt you may like!” Akaashi said excitedly as Bokuto skipped over to see.
It was a bright shirt with two simple drawn cats on it, it was a cute shirt admittedly. Bokuto picked it up off the rack and stared at it wide-eyed.
“Is it cute?” Akaashi spoke his face excited as ever.
Kotarou nodded, he’d never seen Akaashi like this. Like a little kid.
He had found it adorable.
And yet 1 hour later, Akaashi and Bokuto had made their way through only 2 thrift stores.
Bokuto had twice as many shirts as he already did, and Akaashi had bought an unholy amount of clothes.
Checking his wallet Keiji nearly tripped, “I have… 500 yen left.”
Bokuto opened his, “I have 2,000 left.”
“We should probably stop…” Akaashi mumbled sheepishly.
Bokuto agreed with him, “Most likely.”
“Oh no!” Bokuto suddenly yelped.
“What’s wrong!?” Akaashi replied fast, ready to turn Bokuto to his side.
“I have a test tomorrow!” Bokuto cried aloud. “That means I need to study!!” Bokuto whined even louder.
Akaashi pat his shoulder, “It’s okay Bokuto, we’re going to hangout on the 14th anyhow. I have some tests this week aswell so I won’t be able to hangout untill then.”
Bokuto looked at Akaashi. Looked at him real close and sighed.
“Okay… I’ll miss you though!” Bokuto stated and Akaashi nodded.
“I guess that makes two of us.”

“Me and ‘Kaashi-kun hung out today again. He’s so sweet! He bought me a copy of my favorite manga!! I love him so much! We went to the thrift store today, two of them actually. He got so much stuff for me! I’m sad though, I won’t get to see him untill Valentine’s Day! And that’ll probably be my last day being his friend. Either way, I love him. That’s the best words I can use to describe it.”
Signed, Bokuto.

Febuary 14th, Thursday, 2019.
It was a nice day, the air felt fresh. Bokuto got up early. No one else was home.
It was 9:00 AM sharp.
Akaashi had promised to pick Bokuto up from his house at 11 AM, the owl never got his license.
Kotarou grabbed the bright colorful shirt with the two simple drawn cats that Akaashi had picked and put them on. He wore some blue jeans Akaashi picked as well.
He loved Keiji. Every part. He didn’t know what he’d do without him.
He grabbed his journal, and placed it on his kitchen’s counter as he began to make himself some waffles. He went to grab the chocolate syrup out of the fridge when it suddenly hit him.
“Akaashi is going to hate me.”
He found his fear growing bigger and bigger as he tried to shove it down.
“Damnit! Bokuto don’t think about it!” He yelled at his mind.
But he knew it was coming, he tried to make his way to an empty area. But suddenly Bokuto began to fall. He banged his head real hard on the kitchen counter and there was an ugly sound of a crack. Blood began to pour out but Bokuto was still shaking.
After a few long-feeling minutes his shaking stopped. But as he tried to rise he saw it.
He saw the blood pooling on the floor near his head.
His eyes went wide. He couldn’t feel it. He couldn’t feel anything.
Bokuto tried to move, tried to find his phone. He was stuck in place. Tears couldn’t even fall down his cheeks.
He couldn’t speak or think or move or feel. He was nothing.
Bokuto Kotarou died on the floor of his kitchen, blood pooling at his head as his fractured skull pierced his brain.
His refrigerator began to beep, but he couldn’t hear it.
———————-
The doorbell of the empty apartment rang, “Bokuto-san, it’s me.” Akaashi stated. He frowned when the owl didn’t open the door.
Keiji was however grateful, he brought the spare key Kenma had that he’d gotten from Kuroo. He put the key in the keyhole and twisted it untill the door open.
He smiled lightly with success.
Akaashi looked up and around, he saw the Journal on the Kitchen’s counter.
“Bokuto-san?” He called out.
Akaashi felt his foot his something, he looked down and his stomach dropped.
There Bokuto was layed, his clothes were the same ones Akaashi himself had chosen, but his skin was pale, and his eyes were no longer shining as bright.
He dropped down to the floor and picked Bokuto up a bit.
“Bokuto-san.”
Surely, surely not.
He brought Bokuto’s chest closer to his ear, there was no pulse.
Akaashi let out a strangled cry as he began to say no over and over.
He shook Bokuto’s lifeless body. Once, twice. He lost count.
He screamed his name over and over. He saw the wound in Bokuto’s dead brain with his own two eyes.
Nearby neighbors heard the screaming and called officers to the apartment.
They had arrived 10 minutes after Akaashi had gotten there.
Still sobbing Akaashi hugged the dead boy tight, so tight Bokuto would’ve complained that he couldn’t breathe.
But there was no breathe for him to breath now.
The cops had to drag Akaashi away from Bokuto, he was still sobbing uncontrollably.
At one point they had to knock Akaashi out, as he hit a cop when they began to cover Bokuto’s body.
Waking up hours later, Akaashi didn’t immediately remember what had happened.
Keiji was in a hospital bed for an unknown reason. He saw an unknown journal on the counter next to him. He reached for his phone and nearly jumped when the time read 5:53 PM.
He immediately texted Bokuto, apologizing for being late and explaining that he was someplace he didn’t know.
Akaashi accidentally pressed the call button and nurses came in.
Akaashi demanded to know why he was in the hospital, the two nurses stepped aside and they revealed Kenma.
The corners of his eyes were red, Akaashi found that quite strange.
“Kenma. What happened? Does Bokuto know I’m here?” Akaashi spoke.
“He had a seizure.” Kenma stated, a tear slipping down his cheek.
That made Akaashi worried, “Is he okay!? Was it over 5 minutes?”
“We don’t know.”
“So there was no one there? How does no one know!” Akaashi raised his voice.
Kenma sighed with a shaky breath, “He hit his head. His skull cracked on impact and punctured his brain.”
“What?” Akaashi’s voice went higher.
“He died. Bokuto was pronounced dead at 11:12 AM.” Kenma replied.
Akaash felt his world spin. He felt this similar feeling a bit ago as well, and it was all returning to him.
“No. No. No.” He repeated over and over.
“He- He can’t be dead?”
…
Convincing wouldn’t work on Akaashi, in his mind Bokuto was still alive. And everyone was just lying to him.
But Akaashi had one problem.
He didn’t know where he could find Kotarou and explain this stupid situation.
He decided to pick up the journal, Kenma told him to read it. 44 entries.
44 entries about Akaashi.
Keiji flipped through each page,
On the 15th entry, Akaashi spotted a switch. It was the first time in the book where it was stated that Bokuto had romantic feelings for Akaashi.
He felt his chest tighten.
Keiji flipped through more, and reaching the end of the journal felt like reaching a cliff hanger in a book that would never update againz
Because in reality, that was what their relationship was.
Something that ended before it had started.
About a week after Bokuto’s death, Akaashi finally realized the filthy truth that the love of his life was dead.
A life without Bokuto mean’t nothing to Akaashi.
He found himself at the top of a roof. Only right before was he dragged back down, sobbing hardly, by Kenma.
This had happened multiple times.
Multiple times on the brink of ending it all Kenma had been there dragging him down.
Over the course of his young years, Akaashi felt nothing besides the pain and lingering warmth of the event known as Bokuto.
The rest of the world moved on, living like Bokuto would’ve wished for them.
Only Akaashi was there, still clinging on for dear life. He was stuck in the final day they had together for years.
He read Bokuto’s journal everyday for years and years, memorizing every word.
———————
Akaashi lived a long life. A long but painful one.
He died at 83 years old.
Akaashi never got married, never got a job, never finished college.
He was stuck on the day Febuary 14th, Thursday, 2019 his entire life.
The day Bokuto had his last breath.
And the day he learned that the love of his life.
Loved him just the same.
