Work Text:
There are so many things that Sirius loves about James.
He’s his best mate. He’s the sunshine in his life.
He’s cute and lovable.
And… Sirius has been pining for him something terrible since they left Hogwarts.
While the war had helped to distract him for years, but now, he finds himself looking at a bright future that might go on forever and a best mate that he fancies that … doesn’t appear to fancy him.
It’s not that James has a fancy of his own. They both opted to wait on the love front until such time that the war was over.
Now, though, Sirius watches from afar as Lily flirts with James and he suspects that James’ waiting will have paid off. He’s going to go home with her and celebrate and Sirius is going to go home, heartbroken, he just knows it.
It hurts, but he could… try and find someone else. Someone to take his fancy off of pining for his best mate.
He looks around and finds a few of the Order members that he knows would be open to something with him (if only because he’s I’d turn gay to sleep with you gorgeous according to a couple of them). He’s open to that.
Anything to take his mind off James.

James is smiling politely on Lily’s flirting.
It’s nice. It feels good, but she just isn’t Sirius.
He’s come to realize that he’s hopelessly pining for his best mate.
He’d assumed incorrectly that putting the war first would take his mind off his terrible pining, but, unfortunately, it hadn’t.
Things had only gotten worse after that.
James’ pining increased every day of the war, and now that it was over, he doesn’t really have a good excuse for not confessing his feelings… well, other than the obvious.
“Oh, just go kiss him already,” Lily states.
“What? No, I’m – I’m not –” he flushes.
“You definitely are. You’re flushing so hard right now, and despite your fancy of me when we were younger, it’s plainly clear that you fancy him now.”
She’s giving him that knowing look and he sighs.
“Perhaps you’re right.”
“Good, so go celebrate winning the war with a new love.”
He gives her a smile and she gives him a slight push.
He nearly stumbles as he weaves through the party guests, but as he makes it over to where the likes of Gideon is flirting with Sirius, he finds that little nugget of Gryffindor bravery and turns him around.
“I fancy you,” he confesses.
It takes Sirius a second before his face splits into a grin and he kisses him soundly.
It’s short and sweet.
“Good. Then, let’s go home and celebrate.”
“Gladly.”
