She startled and turned. The vending machine behind her hummed daintily, a comforting hotel sound. “No,” she frowned. “I was just window shopping.”
“Oh,” he said, “Ok. Like that song—how much is that Mars bar in the window.” He kind of half sang it and then looked like he wished fervently he had not.
“Yes,” she said, nodding, trying to be dead serious, “exactly like that. You got it.”
They froze. Both in their pajamas, arms crossed over their chests, with no idea about the placement of their arms or that they were mirrored, down to their stances: slouched to mean no harm. The hallway was wide and perfectly straight. A thin quality of light diffused over the carpeting. It seemed, suddenly, very dark, though it was not.
