“I’ll tell you,” Mydei concedes, but there’s a growing, playful part of him who wants to make Phainon struggle more, until Mydei has to face his entire anger and possessiveness and shatter against it in a million pieces. “But only if you do something for me first."
He expects Phainon to fight him on this. It’s how it’s always been between them: they bicker until one of them gives up, and then makes the other fight twice as hard next time. It’s an Alpha thing, petty and annoying and instinctual, like looking back after someone bumped into you — but Phainon doesn’t fight. Phainon’s voice is clear and quiet, compressed in the closed space of his Sedan, and more honest than Mydei will ever be.
“Tell me," he says. "And I’ll do it.”
How simple. How frighteningly easy.
“Anything?”
“Anything.”
How sobering.
Mydei stops laughing. Mydei confesses.
