Work Text:

Today was the day.

Daisuke was gonna confess to Ken.

It was Valentine’s Day. He knew usually girls gave out chocolates on Valentine’s, but neither him or Ken were girls, so screw that rule.

At first he’d thought about just calling Ken and asking if he wanted to go out somewhere together. But both because he thought straight-up asking him to go out would be too obvious, and ‘cause he wanted to walk with Ken there, he was now standing at his front door.

He just needed to knock.

Yup.

…any minute now.

If VMon was with him, he probably would’ve gotten impatient and just started knocking on the door himself.

But he agreed to stay home so hopefully Daisuke and Ken could have some nice time together, just the two of them.

That was if Daisuke could actually get the courage to do anything.

He took a deep breath, before finally knocking on the door. He pulled his hand away as soon as he finished.

And after only a few moments, a tall boy opened the door.

His long indigo hair was down and flowing over his shoulders and back, which was rare since it had gotten so long, he usually tied it into a low ponytail. But god, his hair was so gorgeous down.

He still hadn’t changed out of his school uniform, a black gakuran, but he’d unzipped the jacket and was wearing a light pink shirt underneath.

When he turned to Daisuke, his expression changed from tired and mildly annoyed to downright beaming.

“Daisuke!! What are you doing here?”

“O-Oh, um…”

Straight to the point. That’d given him almost no time to recover from seeing the most amazing, gorgeous boy in the world, and he now had to figure out where he wanted to go with Ken.

“I…was kinda just at home by myself and bored, so I was wonderin’ if you wanted to go out somewhere?”

Great job, Daisuke, using the exact phrase ‘go out’ even though that has romantic connotations. You’re not obvious at all.

Ken tucked a strand of hair behind his ear and grinned.

“I-I’d love to go somewhere! What do you have in mind?”

Wait. Wait, he actually said yes?

H-He didn’t already have a date or anything?

The thing he wanted to do on Valentine’s Day of all days was spend time with Daisuke?

“I-I guess maybe to like…a game store? Like, with claw machines and stuff...”

That was honestly just his first thought.

But his ideal Valentine’s Day really was just being with Ken in any capacity.

(And maybe giving him the Honmei-choco he made…)

“Oh! I should probably change out of my gakuran first, though, ha!” Ken laughed, and Daisuke nodded.

“You can go get changed, I’ll wait here.”

“Kay! I’ll be quick!”

Ken slipped back inside his house and shut the door.

Okay, this gave Daisuke a little time to plan. So they’d go to the game store, play some games, then maybe they could go grab some food? And then maybe…Daisuke could confess…

Right. Yeah, that sounded like a good plan.

After a short wait, Ken pushed open the door again. He was wearing a cozy-looking cream sweater with blue accents and Cinnamoroll on it, as well as matching blue sweatpants. He left his hair down, though he’d tucked it behind both his ears.

He looked so gorgeous. He always looked gorgeous. He didn’t wear this more cutesy style very often, though he’d expressed he liked it.

“Hikari-chan got this sweater for me,” Ken smiled shyly. “...do you like it?”

Every time Ken tried out something new like a new hairstyle or fashion style, he’d always worry someone wouldn’t like it.

Daisuke wished he didn’t have to feel that way. It didn’t matter what others thought about Ken’s hair or style, those were his to choose.

So Daisuke grabbed Ken’s hands, and smiled at him.

“I love it. It suits you! But it doesn’t matter what I think anyway. Do you like it?”

Ken’s smile went from a nervous one to a happy one.

“I do. Cinnamoroll’s my favorite Sanrio character.”

“I think mine is Pochacco!”

Ken slung his bag over his shoulder and the two boys started walking down the stairs out of the apartment building.

“So, how’s your day been?” Ken asked.

“Mostly just a normal day, except for all the Valentine's stuff. I got Giri-choco from Miya and Hikari, and I…well, I got a lot more Honmei-choco than I anticipated…”

It was no surprise to Ken that Daisuke had gotten a lot of Honmei-choco. He was incredibly handsome, and also unbelievably kind. But it’d be a lie to say he wasn’t a little jealous or disappointed. Daisuke had so many people who liked him. So many people who were probably better for him than Ken. So why would he choose him?

And…that was completely disregarding the fact that Daisuke was probably straight anyway.

“I didn’t return any of their feelings…I didn’t know any of them. But I didn’t wanna just refuse their chocolates, so I’m gonna try and eat them all.”

That made Ken perk up a little bit. He tried not to let it show, though.

“I see.”

“I just…I dunno…the only girl I’ve ever really liked is Hikari-chan, and I don’t even have a crush on her anymore.”

He wanted to tell Ken the real reason.

It was because he liked Ken.

He’d never liked anyone else as much as he liked Ken.

But…he made a plan, he was gonna confess later. He just had to be patient.

“That’s okay,” Ken reassured him. “I’m sure they appreciated that you took the chocolates anyway.”

“I hope so.”

Daisuke probably would. If Ken rejected him…

Even thinking about being rejected by Ken made him wanna give up trying to confess and run away.

Cause what if he…

No, no, Ken was the kindest person he’d ever known. If he did reject Daisuke, he’d do it nicely.

“So, I’m pretty sure there’s a game store near here. But if you had a specific one in Odaiba you wanted to go to, we could do that too.”

“Let’s just go to a closer one. I kinda just came up with that on the spot anyway.”

Ken laughed.

“Fair enough. We could’ve just hung out at my house if you didn’t have any plans.”

Yeah, they could’ve done that.

Daisuke just…wanted it to be special.

But he couldn’t tell Ken that cause then he’d probably figure it out.

“I just thought it’d be fun to go somewhere.”

Ken nodded.

“I get that.”

Daisuke let Ken lead the way to the game store, the two of them heading down the street.

“So, you never told me what your day was like.”

“Long. I don’t really know anyone at my school, so I didn’t get any Giri-choco. I got some Honmei-choco, but like you, I wasn’t interested.”

“Mm.” Daisuke hummed.

He couldn’t say he wasn’t a bit excited to know that Ken didn’t already have someone at his school. But that still didn’t mean he liked him.

Soon enough, the two of them reached the game store, and they headed inside.

It was loud, the sound effects and music of games playing over people talking and laughing. A lot of people seemed to be here on dates.

W-Would they assume Daisuke and Ken were on a date?

The thought made Daisuke blush. He hid his face in his scarf.

“There’s so much stuff here. I don’t even know where to start.” Ken looked around, the bright colors and flashing lights overwhelming him.

“Whatever you wanna try, we can. Or if you wanna find somewhere to sit for a sec, we can try that too.”

Ken nodded.

“Wanna know something funny?”

“Sure.”

“I’m pretty sure I’ve actually never tried a claw machine before.”

Daisuke blinked.

“Really?”

“Mhm. Not for lack of trying,” He chuckled. “We’ve just never really gone somewhere with them on purpose, they were always on the way to something and we didn’t have the time to stop and play one. And when I was little, my parents didn’t want me to be disappointed if the claw didn’t even get anything, or got something I didn’t want.” He shrugged.

“Mm, fair enough. We have to fix that, though.”

Daisuke took a coin from his bag and pulled Ken over to the nearest claw machine.

Ken chuckled and smiled fondly at Daisuke.

“I probably have a coin, I can pay for it.”

“Aw, c’mon, my treat! This is your first time ever playing a claw game!”

Ken affectionately rolled his eyes, before taking the coin Daisuke handed to him and placing it in the machine.

Ken finally looked at the claw machine they’d sort of randomly picked. It had a couple Valentine-themed plushes of Rilakkuma and Korilakkuma holding little hearts.

“Aww. I hope I get one!”

Daisuke grinned and watched as Ken began to move the crane, trying to center it over one of the plushies.

After a little bit of moving the crane, he pushed the button and the claw moved down, grabbing one of the Rilakkuma plushies.

“I got it!!” Ken waited as the claw dropped the plush, and took it out of the machine, happily showing it to Daisuke.

“That barely took you any time, and you got the plush,” Daisuke laughed. “I’m real bad at claw machines.”

Ken crossed his arms. “Well, this one was easy. I bet I’d be bad at the hard ones too.”

The two of them looked around again, and Ken decided to try a harder claw machine to prove to Daisuke that he was also bad at them. He picked a Sanrio one, this one had smaller plushies so it was easier to miss them.

As Ken moved the crane, Daisuke cheered him on. He couldn’t stop himself from blushing.

He carefully made sure the crane was centered over a little Pochacco plush, and then he lowered the claw.

As the claw slowly picked up the plushie, Ken waited nervously. It successfully dropped the plushie in the chute.

“You did it again!!” Daisuke cheered, as Ken took the plushie out of the machine.

“This one wasn’t that hard either.”

“C’mon, just accept that you’re good at claw machines,” Daisuke crossed his arms. “You’re amazing, it’s no surprise.”

Ken’s cheeks turned red and he quickly looked down so Daisuke wouldn’t see.

He held out the little plush to Daisuke, whose eyes widened.

“So that’s why you got the Pochacco one.”

Ken smiled.

“I got it for you.”

Daisuke happily took the plushie, internally squealing. Ken got him a gift on Valentine’s Day.

Even if he didn’t mean it that way, it still made his heart flutter.

“I wanna play one next!” Daisuke exclaimed, looking around at all the games. “The racing game over there looks kinda fun.”

“Let’s try it!”

The two of them played games for a couple hours, talking and laughing and having so much fun. They played a few more crane games, getting a bit more stuff for themselves and some stuff for their friends. By the time they finally finished in the arcade, it was afternoon.

After grabbing quick snacks from the vending machine, Daisuke and Ken headed outside and sat on a bench together.

“That was so much fun. Thanks for suggesting that, Dai.”

Daisuke grinned at him.

“Of course! I had so much fun too.”

As the two sat in silence, Daisuke realized this was…probably a good time to give him the Honmei-choco.

There weren’t many people around, and they were far enough away from the people who were around that they probably couldn’t hear.

So…

“Um…Ken…?”

He didn’t mean for his voice to sound so quiet and nervous.

“Yeah?”

Ken turned to him, his beautiful blue eyes filled with worry.

“I…there’s kinda a reason that I wanted to hang out today. Of course, I also just love hanging out with you, but…I…”

Daisuke fidgeted with his hands, Ken just waiting in silence for him to finish.

His heart pounded as he slowly reached into his bag.

And he pulled out the box of Honmei-choco.

Ken’s eyes widened.

“...here. Um…I made these for you.”

Daisuke swallowed as Ken took the small box, and opened it to see a bunch of chocolates, painstakingly and lovingly decorated.

By Daisuke.

For him.

“...I love you.” Daisuke finally mumbled.

As Ken stared at Daisuke, tears began to form in his eyes.

They quietly streamed down his face as his shoulders trembled.

“Ken, I…I-I’m so sorry, I…”

Wait. No, no, no! He was getting the wrong idea.

“Daisuke, no, no! Y-You have nothing to apologize for!! I’m crying because I love you too. And I…I thought you’d never, in a million years, reciprocate. Because why would you like me when there’s so many amazing people better for you than me?”

“...r-really? You really like me back?”

Ken nodded, a smile spreading across his face.

Daisuke tackled him into a hug.

“C-Careful,” Ken laughed. “You worked so hard on the chocolates, I don’t want them to get messed up.”

He gently closed the lid of the little box and put it in his bag so he could hug Daisuke back, so tight it felt like he’d never let go.

“Ken, I just want you to know, there’s absolutely nobody better for me than you. You’re so amazing and kind, I’m so lucky to have you as my best friend.”

Ken beamed, hugging Daisuke even tighter.

“I’m so lucky to have you as my best friend.”

After a long hug, the two boys eventually pulled away.

“So…does this mean we’re…y’know…dating now?” Daisuke asked.

“A-As long as that’s okay with you, I…I would love that.” Ken replied.

Daisuke grinned

“I would love that too.”

As Daisuke and Ken smiled at each other, they found their faces naturally moving closer and closer.

Until finally, Ken wrapped his arms around Daisuke to pull him into a kiss.

It was…breathtaking.

This was basically all Daisuke had wanted since he started high school. To be Ken’s boyfriend. And maybe to kiss him if he was lucky.

He couldn’t believe it. He was Ken’s boyfriend.

When they inevitably had to pull away, Ken gave him one more kiss on the cheek for good measure.

“How could someone as amazing as you like me?” Daisuke asked, his heart still fluttering.

“How could someone as amazing as you like me?” Ken added.

“Cause you're so amazing.”

Ken giggled.

After a few moments, Ken looked up at the sky to see that the sun had begun to set.

“I should probably head home pretty soon…It's almost dinner time.”

“Yeah, me too. But I’ll see you tomorrow!”

Ken nodded.

“I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

As the two boys got up and walked over to the sidewalk, they shared one last hug.

“I love you, Dai. I’m never gonna stop saying that now.”

Daisuke chuckled. “I love you too, Ken. And I’ll never stop saying it either.”
