Reze looked afar at the horizon of ashy blue, the muffled waves lapping at the sand, and the empty feelings of confusion that would detonate every line of thought that would course through her. Her toes curl in the sand, her torn sleeves stained with dried-up blood, and her green eyes that almost seem to have a pit of exhaustion deep inside. There were strands of purple sticking to her sweat-laden forehead. She looks over at this crazy- no- deranged boy sitting in the sand next to her, Denji. How strange Denji was, he just couldn’t understand anything. She bites her lip, nose scrunching, almost..barely there was a tear which was then pulled back in. Her voice then carries out silently.
“I don't believe it….why did you revive me are you crazy…”
She says oh so quietly, so cold that you couldn’t read the tone, her hair covered her face, and the way she gritted her teeth so tightly. Her eyes stuck to the grey sand now. Denji starts to speak after a long pause, and everything starts to muffle out in a warm hum.
“I’m sittin here thinking about what a great life I have, sure I get my ass kicked— I die more than I’d like to…” Denji mutters.
Reze now hears the chainsaw devil’s heartbeat, a sound almost as if it were a light.
Denji keeps going. “I can’t just turn you in– it’d feel like there would be somethin at the back of my throa-”
Suddenly, it feels as if a needle has been driven through her heart.
“You think you’d still say that if I tried to kill you right now.”
She said in that same cold tone, Denji's words were slammed by a ruthless brake. The moment Reze said that, everything went silent. The waves crashing down, the soft snores of Beam beside Denji, the seagulls above them. The moment she said that, this needle had torn through her heart completely, and these feelings she had would wash away with the waves and the soviet union.
Then Denji had said something.
Something so stupid, so utterly infuriating… along the lines of “Going out from a hot girl would be pretty badass.”
Reze had just paused, stopped and blinked a couple times.
She dusted the sand off her legs when she stood up. She spat out a small laugh, then she just kept... going. She laughed for a long moment before her soft voice cut through the air. Her voice was layered with such a bitterness you couldn’t place it.
“You naive boy, do you still think I liked you for real..”
“The look on my face when I met you, I even learned how to fake blush. It was all a lie.” She looks at him, standing up while looking over with that smile, still living that lie.
“I took too much time before I fought you. I failed.”
In her mind, those explosions from the city were still ringing.
“Well, I’ll be going now.”
In the middle of the explosion, she kept seeing Denji.
Reze turns away to walk back along the sand when she hears a shuffling and the call of Denji’s voice. “Do you wanna run away together-”
Reze stops again, and the atmosphere silent except for the soft rolling waves. She couldn’t do this now. Not right now, she’s trying her hardest. It feels as if someone’s hands have clamped around her throat, but she only stops to look back in indifference. This voice inside her was scraping like metal across metal, begging her to agree.
“You know I’ve killed tons of people. If you run away with me, you’ll be an accomplice to a murderer, you understand that, right?”
She’s now looking directly into Denji’s eyes, who is now sheepishly rubbing the back of his head, making her feel the tiniest bit warmer.
“I know I shouldn’t be saying this, but I still like you. After all, you taught me how to swim.” Denji declared.
Reze can’t help but tease Denji, going so close to his lips before hitting his legs. He loudly thuds in the sand, unable to move, and finally walks away.
“You should learn to be smarter.”
One tiny voice calls out “Oi Reze!.. Reze.. Come on.. Reze! I’ll be waiting for you at the cafe at lunch!” Then Reze’s figure disappears.
Reze walks through the alleyway, rain pouring down on her, and hoping to see Denji at least one last time, being selfish and disregarding her mission. As she sees the back window of the cafe, she sees a small sliver of Denji’s face, her stomach filling with something she couldn’t place. She feels a cold, sharp pain in her abdomen as she falls and hits the ground with a loud thud. Reze is in a state of shock. She sees her blood pool around her; she looks down to see two spearheads poking out of her. The rain pouring down on her makes it harder to breathe. She sees a silhouette of a person just barely, a devil hunter? As her body starts to twitch. “D-Denji.” She whispers before the air goes silent, and the only sound that could be heard now is the pouring rain.
Silent hums could be heard from Reze. Someone's ears were always listening, the ears of control.
