Insecure

Summary:

„Jabber? What do ya have behind your back...?“ Zanka asked right away.

„Nothin‘, don’t sweat it, Zan.“

Zanka and Jabber were just looking at each other for a solid minute. Then Zanka sprang forward to pin Jabber down.

or: Jabber seems to be hiding something from Zanka

Work Text:

Jabber was currently sitting beside Zanka in the lecture hall. They didn’t share that many classes, but when they had a shared one, Jabber always sat beside Zanka. The latter was convinced it was to get on his nerves. And well, most of the time Jabber did achieve that goal. Though Zanka did get a bit better at ignoring the other boy. For the sake of his notes.

Speaking of notes, it was normal for Jabber to not take them, but in some classes he still took some here and there. However, today he was just doodling. Which, yeah, that was also normal, but he didn’t even have some of the words the prof said in between the doodles. Which was weird.

Zanka side-eyed Jabber’s doodles. Noticing it was chibi Jabber and Zanka. Like concerningly over and over again in different situations. All over the page.

To be honest, it was kinda calming to watch the doodles come together.
Jabber must have noticed the eyes on him, or rather, on his page, because he stopped drawing. Which finally snapped Zanka out of his trance, just to notice he had missed two pages of the presentation the prof was going through. Just awesome…now he would have to ask Follo again for some notes.

When the class ended, the both of them quickly packed up to get to the cafeteria. It would be full in approximately 2 minutes, so they had to hurry. This fact somehow didn’t reach Jabber, it seemed, since he threw his stuff into his bag in slow motion. Something was definitely up with him, Zanka noted. Normally, the other one was urging Zanka to gather his stuff faster with glances towards the clock so they could finally get some food without having a whole line of hangry people in front of them…

Which now was exactly the situation they found themselves in. That’s why they decided to drive to a nearby place to get food.

Once they sat at a table and had their food in front of them, Zanka just realized how hungry he actually was. Jabber seemed to realize the same thing because he was basically devouring the meal in record time.

„So, could ya lend me your notes sometimes?“ Jabber asked with a full mouth, which caused Zanka to cringe a little.

„Swallow first, would ya?“

Jabber obliged to that. Speeding up chewing.

„Why didn’t ya take some yourself today?“ Zanka decided to ask when he saw Jabber finishing his food.

Jabber didn’t reply immediately. He seemed to be thinking about what to answer, which was rare. Normally the guy blabbered out every single thought he had.

„Hmm, didn’t feel like it.“ Came Jabber‘s answer with a broad smile spread across his face. Zanka was agitated, to say the least. Which just seemed to broaden the smile on Jabber’s lips.

„Heh, don’t pop a vein, Zan-Zan.“ Jabber added, which didn’t really help.

Zanka tried to calm down. Still ending up agreeing to lend Jabber his notes later.

They were currently in Zanka’s dorm room. Having met up to study, or well, it was mostly so Jabber could go over Zanka’s notes. Because he definitely had lost the ’taking notes unsupervised’ privileges after that one time Zanka got them back all crumbled.

„Thanks a lot, Zan-Zan. Really needed these.“ Jabber thanked him.

„Take some yourself next time instead of doodling…“

„Yeah, yeah, I will.“

He didn’t. It became a routine for them to meet up after class so Jabber could copy his notes. And Zanka really didn’t understand why. I mean, if you’re already sitting in the class, why not do it right away and use the time productively?

Though, Zanka really couldn’t complain about their meetups. Jabber could help him with his chemistry homework, like that, which was, actually, pretty helpful. Zanka got the formulas and stuff for once without taking an hour for each problem.

At first he was a bit insecure about asking Jabber about the problem. However, he quickly realized it wasn’t that bad to ask someone for help. Zanka had been doing that before, but with Jabber, he felt like he could ask further if he didn’t grasp it at the first explanation. Which was rare since Jabber actually explained the stuff pretty well. Surprisingly well.

So all in all, their little meetups after class were used productively…besides their little breaks. Zanka didn’t want to go into detail.

It happened at one of these meetings. Jabber was searching for his phone in his backpack. When he couldn’t find it, he decided to dump the whole contents of said bag on the floor.

Zanka was ready to complain about the mess when Jabber almost sprang forward to grab something from the pile and hide it behind his back.
Well, that wasn’t normal or reassuring at all.

„Jabber? What do ya have behind your back...?“ Zanka asked right away. Since every time Jabber was hiding something in the past, it often resulted in some kind of prank, mostly on Zanka. And well, he really didn’t need that on top of uni stress right now.

„Nothin‘, don’t sweat it, Zan.“

Zanka and Jabber were just looking at each other for a solid minute. Then Zanka sprang forward to pin Jabber down. The other boy dodged, though, which resulted in a little chase around the room.

After a few minutes Zanka finally had Jabber where he wanted him. Pinned under him. They were both out of breath. Zanka was intently looking at the boy under him. Jabber tried to avoid eye contact, squirming around. Probably trying to escape, but Zanka’s grip was too strong even for Jabber.

„Jabber. Once again. What do ya have there?“

Jabber let out a sigh before bringing his hands out from behind his back.

„A case?“ Jabber answered though it sounded more like a question.

And Zanka wasn’t dumb. He immediately realized it was a case for glasses. I mean, he himself had some too. So how would he not know what case it was?

„Why do ya have glasses in your backpack?“ Maybe Zanka wasn’t that smart after all. „Ya stole em?“ He added. This was the only explanation he had for Jabber acting that way about it.

„Huh? Why would I steal glasses?“ Jabber just asked back.

Now they were both back to staring at each other. Dumbfounded this time.

Zanka was connecting the dots. Jabber not taking notes but still needing them.

„These are yours?“

Jabber was just nodding in affirmation. Now, once again, avoiding eye contact.

„Why would ya not want me to know?“ Zanka continued his questioning.

Jabber let out a sigh before answering. „I don’t like how they look on me…“

Zanka was shocked. The Jabber Wonger was insecure about his glasses. Who would have thought that? The guy seemed to not be worried about a single thing. Always loud and obnoxious. Wearing whatever he wanted. Not giving a damn about what others think about him.

„So that’s why you needed my notes.“

„Mhm, yeah, couldn’t really see that far.“ Jabber added to Zanka’s statement.

„But the first semester you did take notes.“

„Yeah, I had contact lenses, but my eyes were always super dry because of em, so I had to stop.“ He explained further.

Zanka was just nodding at that. It made sense.

„Can I see em on ya?“ Zanka asked hesitantly. He was just really interested to see what kind of glasses Jabber was hiding in that case. On top of that Zanka couldn’t believe that anything could look bad on Jabber.

Jabber started at Zanka wide-eyed. He then got into a sitting position. The best he could do. Still being kinda under Zanka.

Jabber turned around. A click could be heard. Then he turned back around to face Zanka, with glasses decorating his face.

Zanka was opening and closing his mouth. He didn’t know what to say. The glasses simply looked beautiful on Jabber. No idea why that guy was insecure about that.

Jabber misinterpreted the silence. He was reaching for the glasses sitting on his nose to take them off when Zanka’s hand grasped his wrist to stop him.

„Leave em on. They make ya look real pretty.“ Zanka blurted out in a hurry. Not wanting to send the false signal about him not liking what he sees any longer.

Jabber’s ears reddened a bit at the comment. The same thing happened for Zanka. However, for him, the blush was ten times worse. Covering his whole face. He seemed to gain consciousness about what he just blabbered out.

„I mean, you’re always pretty. No I mean…I guess they make you look…okay?“ He decided on.

Jabber broke out in loud laughter at Zanka’s fumbling.

„Don’t laugh, asshole!“ Zanka yelled and shoved Jabber a bit. Which caused the other boy to fall back down, not without bringing Zanka down with him.

Their heads crashed together, though none of them were bothered by that. They were staring at each other again. Zanka admired Jabber under him, with his locs laid out beautifully around his face. His glasses making his facial features pop even more. He was simply…

„Beautiful.“ Zanka spoke out loud.

Jabber smiled softly up at him. „Man, you’re really buryin‘ me under compliments today, huh, Zan-Zan?“

He was about to go on, probably with something mocking, but Zanka shut him up with the only thing he knew would work. Their lips clashing together. At first Jabber was caught off guard, but he quickly reciprocated the kiss, even deepening it.

After a while it had to come to an end since both boys were out of breath. They parted, their breaths mingling between them.

„If I knew glasses would rile you up like that, I would have worn em sooner.“ Jabber mocked.

„Ugh, shuddap!“ Zanka hid his face in the crook of Jabber’s neck.

On the following Monday Zanka was sitting at his normal place in the lecture hall. He was getting his stuff ready when Jabber entered the hall with a smug look on his face. Said face being decorated by his glasses. Zanka’s mouth fell open watching the other boy making his way over to sit beside Zanka.

During the class Zanka couldn’t stop stealing glances at Jabber. He even abandoned the idea of getting any notes done. Once they got ready to leave the room, he embarrassingly had to ask Jabber for his notes for once…
