Summary
Baelor Targaryen survived his injuries at the Ashford Tourney. When the Great Spring Sickness hit, he lost his son and heir Valarr. King Daeron survived, but his brush with death and his old age have led to a decline in his health. With Matarys being Baelor’s only living heir, King Daeron urges his son to remarry and goes as far as to arrange a political match with Lady Alyssa Mertyns.
A reluctant Baelor travels to Mistwood, for an even more reluctant Alyssa’s nameday, to formalize their betrothal, before they travel together to King’s Landing for the wedding. The morning of the Prince’s arrival, Alyssa is walking by the river when she discovers the dead body of a knight in her house’s employ. Among his belongings they discover a paper bearing the Blackfyre sigil. Amidst rising suspicions and the emotional tension of the engagement, the pair begins to investigate.
