Work Text:

Colby has always loved animals. It was a known fact between the fans and his friends. He was the kind of guy that would walk into a house and immediately start petting the cat at the entrance. You could say he had this sorta pull that made animals gravitate towards him—well, mainly cats and dogs, but still.

But if there was someone who loved animals more than Colby, it was Sam. Sam loves animals—more than the typical “cats and dogs” kind of love. He loves beautiful and majestic creatures like a peacock, down to scaly skinned reptiles, which yes—included snakes.

Colby can admit that seeing Sam get rejected by animals tugged something within him, but Sam didn’t seem to mind, at least on the outside.

“Dude, can’t believe that cat scratched you. I told you not to pet it,” Colby said, glancing at the scratch.

They were on the road now, driving back to the hotel after an investigation.

“Hey, I told you I’m alright. It only cut through a few layers of skin, see?” Sam held up the back side of his hand to Colby from the passenger side.

Colby wasn’t pleased with that response, but he still kept his eyes on the road.

The car ride was silent for a moment, until Sam suddenly shot forward in his seat.

“Colby! Stop the car!”

Colby instantly slammed on the breaks, the car screeching to a halt. “What—? Sam, what is it?”

But Sam was already out the door.

Colby got out of his seat and scrambled after him. His eyes darted around the dim road. “Sam—”

“Shh,” Sam hushed. “There.” Sam pointed towards a fluffy ball of fluff on the side of the road.

Upon closer inspection, Colby could make out its light brown color, and long ears.

A rabbit.

Its hind legs were wrapped in a thin piece of string.

“Oh, oh damm…” Colby mumbled out.

Sam crouched down immediately, already working the knot out with his fingers.

Colby stared at Sam as he worked. Mumbling a few “be careful” and “it’s still a wild animal.”

Soon, the string fell away. The rabbit shifted—testing its legs, before giving a test hop.

But before it bolted, it pressed itself briefly against Sam’s hand. A tiny nuzzle. Then hopped off into the darkness.

They watched it disappear. Colby blinked, “No way.”

A grin then creeped onto Colby’s face. “Guess that’s an animal that likes you,” He nudged Sam lightly on the shoulder.

Sam gave a small laugh. “Yeah… guess it is.”

Colby places his hand on Sam’s arm, helping him up from the ground. “C’mon, let's clean up that scratch before we hit the road again.”

“Okay,” was all Sam could say as he continued staring off into the direction the rabbit hopped away to.
