Work Text:
Long, long ago, when the Universe was teeming with chaos, a creature drew itself up from the Earth, naming itself Gaia. He wandered the planet, with creatures like himself popping up from his wake, but not as strong. Some were merely furred, others scaled, and yet others feathered. These "animals" were interesting, but they could not understand things as Gaia did. And so he was lonely.
One day, however, the bright star lighting the Earth flared greatly, with a strange creature bursting from it, landing upon the planet. It looked like the hot insides of Earth, with a strange protrusion covering the top of its mouth. Like the "birds", it was feathered, only the ones it possessed were seemingly made of fire. Most different from the animals, it stood upon two legs, and had strange ends to its "arms", seemingly for grasping objects. Confused, Gaia approached the creature.
"Who are you?" he asked, cocking a head at the being. Meeting his gaze, the stranger thought for a minute, before introducing himself.
"I am Solaris. Who are you?"
"I am Gaia." he said, looking up at this new being. As the two met each other's gaze, they realized something.
This other being understood. Understood like what it was like.
Steadily, the two developed a routine of sorts. Solaris even began keeping records of what happened day after day, penning the terms of "time" and "history".
Still, one other came to call Earth their home. A creature unlike both Gaia and Solaris. She had the same arm endings as Solaris, calling them "hands", but had no plummage, fur, or scales. Her skin was smooth, her feathered wings attaching to her "clothes". Still, she did not seek to claim Earth for herself, but to coexist with those who already called it home. Thus, they became a trio.
Other lesser beings came about, similar to Solaris and Illumina, called "faunan" and "human". Still, the three couldn't think of anything more to do.
One day, however, they made a grave mistake.
While frolicking through this world, such energy being concentrated put a terrible strain on the crust, causing the Earth to break apart from itself.
Gaia, Solaris, and Illumina felt horrible. They had hurt their home. So, they set to work.
Solaris began to slow down how fast the planet was breaking apart. Illumina started gathering all the hope in the world, imbuing herself and her friends with them as strength. And, being the eldest of the three, Gaia took up the job of pushing the pieces back together.
By the time they had finished, it had been two weeks, and all three were spent.
Still, the oddest was yet to be revealed, since in the cracks of the Earth, Gaia had found seven gems of pure chaos energy. Capricious, were these seven new beings, hard and sparkling.
"Where all did you come from?" he asked them.
"You made us." they said. "The three of you gave off the chaos energy that hardened into the seven of us."
This made the three divine beings step back. None of them had intended to hurt their home.
Stewing slightly, Gaia gritted his teeth before dashing off, telling his friends to bring the chaos-filled jewels and follow him. They didn't fully understand, but they did as he asked.
Upon reaching a clearing, Gaia began to gather some dirt and a bunch of stones, pressing them together with chaos energy of his own.
As he pressed and pressed, the clump began to look like the gems they'd found, its surface becoming smooth and greenish, its shape, sharp and defined.
"Gaia... What is this?" Illumina asked.
"Both of you, place the jewels on the ground around what I have made, and put your hands on it." he said, steadfast.
The human and faunan shared a look before acquiescing to Gaia's orders.
As they placed their hands next to Gaia's front paws, the world around them began to glow. Streaks of green, red, yellow, white, purple, and two shades of blue seemed to zap up from the ground into the air, before diving into the giant gem. Chaos energy soared all around them, to the point where the trio couldn't even see each other, just the blinding power of unbridled chaos.
By the time everything had died down, the seven gems had shrunken, all while the one Gaia had made was now radiating chaos energy. The seven were silent.
Their world settled, but it wasn't as it was.
The three divine beings sat for a while, trying to figure out what to do. Hours passed, with an idea only being solidified under the light of the moon.
Slowly, Gaia stood. Taking a deep breath, he turned to Solaris and Illumina.
"I need you two to tear me in half."
"WHAT!?" they shouted.
"Gaia, what are you talking about?" Solaris asked, stepping closer.
"We have not fixed the problem. We have fixed the consequences, but chaos energy will still build up in the Earth. It will break apart again."
"Then we can fix it again!"
"But what if something happens to us? What if you or Illumina are unavailable? Please, tear me in half, so I can handle both parts."
"Parts..?" Illumina repeated, confusion laced through the word.
"One half of me will tear the Earth apart, and the other will put it back together. The breaking will allow all the chaos energy building up to escape, without risking permanent damage to the planet."
"Fair enough, but why must you be in half, Gaia? Why split your strength?"
"I need to be split not for my strength, but my will. I know myself well enough to know if I am whole, I will slack. I'll think I have more time than I do, and then something unfixable may happen. I can't risk it, Sol."
"The populace will come to hate half of you. Do you really want such a fate?"
"It is necessary, Illu."
Solaris and Illumina tried to come up with some day to shut down Gaia's solution, but couldn't think of anything outside of that they didn't want him to go.
Reluctantly, they agreed, holding him close for the last time.
Steeling themselves, Solaris lit the place they were with all the heat of the sun, while Illumina made a single slash through Gaia. As the smoke cleared, the two halves became two separate beings. Neither stirred.
Carefully, Solaris had the clearing go back, to when the world was torn, dropping both Gaias into the crack before sealing it shut again.
"See you later, Illumina." he said, before taking to the skies as brilliantly as the dawn. He never spoke to her again.
As the years past, Illumina's prediction came true. "Dark" Gaia came to be hated, if not feared for its actions, while "Light" Gaia was revered as fiercely as when he was whole.
Illumina decided to find a good place to hide all the chaos-filled gems, choosing a small island in the middle of the ocean to take her rest. Due to this, such a place came to be known as "Angel's Island"
As for Solaris, he stopped living time linearly. The only place he lived like that again was a small kingdom connected to Spagonia, which came to be known as "Soleanna", "The Sun's Respite", due to the fact that they had given him a place to stay during his wanderings. As such, he claimed the kingdom as under his protection.
The gems came to be known as the "Chaos Emeralds", with their controller being dubbed the "Master Emerald".
But the rest? All lost to time...
