Second Date (Rewrite)

Summary:

Mirio and Yuyu notice their friends are acting weird
Nejire and Tamaki go on their second date
Mirio and Yuyu find out afterward
:>

Notes:

This is actually quite a bit different than the original version of this fic. First off, I added the rest of the Bakusquad instead of just having Kirishima and Mina. I felt like it made more sense. I also made Tamaki strangely good at bowling.
Sorry if Tamaki seems OOC I guess in my AU, when he fully opens up to people, he's a lot less shy and shows a lot of different sides.
Basically I keep basing Tamaki's personality off of my own (except for that being good at carnival games and bowling. I've never been to a carnival in my life [I actually think I would hate carnivals. Too many people, I don't like a lot of junk food, and I get motion sick on pretty much anything that moves, and I'm pretty mediocre at bowling, I'd say).

Also, at the place that says (*insert image*), here's a link to the image: https://www.instagram.com/p/DQDOa2vgcOs/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

Work Text:

Nejire was outside, currently hanging out with Yuyu. The two were chatting with each other—well, more like Yuyu was talking, and Nejire was completely spacing out, thinking about the past week.

The past week had been the best week of her life. She’d finally gotten together with Tamaki Amajiki, whom she’d liked for a while. Now dating him, she was learning new things about him, as he was opening up a lot more. The two were practically inseparable these days. The only reason they weren’t together right now was that Tamaki was hanging out with Mirio, who’d finally recovered from the flu.

Every day with Tamaki was amazing. They’d hung out every day that week. Watching movies, snuggling on Tamaki’s bed, making breakfast together in the morning, and talking about whatever subject came to mind. And Nejire would kiss Tamaki on the cheek every time he headed somewhere (such as out on patrol with Fat Gum), which always left the boy an adorable blushing mess.

“Earth to Nejire,” Yuyu’s voice broke through the girl’s thoughts.

“Huh? Oh, sorry, what were you saying?” Nejire shook off all thoughts about love.

“What’s going on with you? You’ve been distracted all week,” Yuyu questioned. “Are you okay?”

“I’m amazing!” It wasn’t a lie. “Never better!”

Nejire’s face certainly matched her claim of happiness, and Yuyu couldn’t find any signs that the smile was fake. But she wondered what had her friend so cheery.

“Hmm, good week?” She pried.

“Yep, a great week! The best!” Nejire beamed.

Strange, school had been pretty boring that week. Nothing interesting outside of school either. There was definitely something Yuyu was missing here.

“What’s made it so-” Yuyu started, but was interrupted.

“Hi, Togata! Hi, Tamaki!” Nejire waved to the boys who were walking nearby.

“Hey, Hado! Hello, Haya. How’s it going?” Mirio greeted, joining the picnic table the two girls were sitting at. Tamaki sat at the table too, choosing to sit next to Nejire, across from Mirio and Haya.

“It’s going good, mostly. Except Nejire will not focus on conversation at all,” Haya replied. “Keeps getting lost in thought. “

“Her too?” Mirio asked.

“Too? Is someone else-”

“Pretty sure Tamaki hasn’t taken in a single thing I’ve told him this morning. He didn’t even react when I started speaking nonsense,” Mirio explained. “Although it seems he can listen to Hado just fine.”

Sure enough, Tamaki and Nejire were chatting with each other. And whoa, Yuyu had never seen Amajiki talk that much. But this time, he was making conversation instead of just listening while Nejire went on for a while.

“Those to have been basically attached at the hip this week,” Yuyu commented while Tamaki and Nejire whispered to each other, reconfirming their date that night. “I’ve hardly seen them separated. Neither has anyone in their class.”

“I haven’t seen much of them this week, but they were acting differently when they visited me the day after they went to the carnival. It helped them bond, I guess,” Mirio replied.

The four hung out for the rest of the day. But it seemed more like Tamaki and Nejire were hanging out just with them, while Mirio and Yuyu had their own conversation. Yuyu didn’t normally talk much with Mirio, but she decided it was actually pretty enjoyable.

In the evening, Tamaki and Nejire both said they had to go, and they disappeared.

Tamaki decided on a sweater for this date. He’d been to this bowling alley many times, and it always seemed to be freezing in there.

Seemed Nejire had the same idea by putting a jacket over her shirt. Her shirt was somehow the same color as Tamaki’s sweater.

“Do you have some sixth sense that allows you to find the perfect match to my outfit?” Tamaki asked. It wasn’t the first time that week, their casual clothing kept at least semi-matching.

“Maybe, because I don’t know how I keep doing that,” Nejire giggled. “You know, you look good with your hair in a ponytail.”

“So do you- we even matched our hairstyles this time,” Tamaki interrupted himself upon the realization.

“We must have some sort of link that makes us subconsciously pick things that match,” Nejire decided. “Well, should we get going?”

The two walked to the bowling alley, Nejire telling her boyfriend about her most recent patrol with Ryukyu along the way. Tamaki was perfectly content to listen to her.

When they got to the alley, they quickly got their bowling shoes and headed to a free lane. As they were doing their first throws, it was very apparent that Tamaki was practically a bowling god while Nejire rarely got anything other than a gutter ball.

“Wow, you’re just a man of many hidden talents, aren’t you?” Nejire commented.

Tamaki shyly rubbed the back of his neck. “My mom has been bringing me here since I was little, so I have a lot of practice.”

“Your mom seems like a lot of fun,” Nejire stated as she threw another gutter ball.

“If you keep throwing the ball like that, you’ll never hit any pins,” Tamaki told her. He grabbed his own ball and got into position. “You should try doing it more like this.” Tamaki demonstrated the way his mother always told him to throw the bowling ball, getting a perfect strike after it left his hand.”

Nejire watched with determination, copying his exact movements. When the ball left her hands, it rolled until it hit the pins perfectly.

“I did it! I got a strike!” She jumped up and down in excitement. She’d never gotten a strike in her life. “Thank you!”

Tamaki smiled. “You’re welcome.”

The two took a quick break to eat a dinner of french fries and chicken nuggets. They watched as other people bowled, a lot of them not being great at it.

Once they were finished with their food, they went back to bowling. Nejire didn’t get nearly as many strikes as Tamaki did, but at least she wasn’t getting gutter balls anymore. Tamaki won the game.

“You’re like a god when it comes to bowling and carnival games. And it’s cute when it brings out your confident side,” Nejire complemented.

Tamaki blushed. “I’m not that great…”

“Pretty sure you got mostly strikes today. Be proud of yourself!” Nejire replied.

Instead of starting another round of bowling, Nejire and Tamaki decided they would join the ice cream sundae eating contest that was happening by lane 5.

The sundaes were insanely huge, so the contest was in teams of two. Tamaki and Nejire immediately decided to be a team. A very bored employee explained the rules and what prizes would be given out to the first, second, and third-place teams. After the explanation, a timer was started.

Not far into the sundae, Tamaki noticed ice cream melting on Nejire’s cheek. He grabbed a napkin, temporarily setting his spoon down.

“Nejire, you’ve got something on your face,” Tamaki pointed out. Nejire set her spoon down and tried to wipe the dessert off her face, only getting a little bit of it off.

Tamaki chuckled, taking to wiping her cheek off with the napkin. Nejire giggled a little.

Then they took to eating more of the sundae. They both kept laughing when the other would get a brain freeze, or the one time Nejire launched some ice cream onto Tamaki’s nose.

They’d eaten a little more than half the sundae. Only 3 other teams had managed to do that, who, to their surprise, were all UA first years who must have come together.

Third place went to Bakugo and Sero. The explosive blond wasn’t very happy, both because the team didn’t win and because he had quite the brain freeze. The team was given a couple of coupons that would get them into a local roller rink for a night for free.

Nejire and Tamaki managed second place. They were given coupons for a free meal at a restaurant that had recently opened up. The place looked like it’d have some good food.

First place went to Kirishima and Ashido, who had somehow managed to eat the entire sundae. They earned coupons to go to the amusement park for a day completely free. The two were very excited about that.

Meanwhile, the other first-year team was a little disappointed. Well, one of them was.

“Fourth place is still pretty good, Kaminari,” the girl of the team was telling a Pikachu-looking boy.

“Yeah, but it doesn’t give us prizes,” Kaminari pouted.

“Alright, you can all go now, it’s almost time for us to close,” The employee said in a monotone voice before walking away.

“Well, he’s lively,” Tamaki commented. Nejire giggled.

“I love when your sarcastic side comes out,” she told him as they exited the building.

Tamaki blushed. “So, when should we plan on dinner?”

“Looks like the coupons are good for a couple weeks, so anytime in that time frame,” Nejire replied. “Maybe we can go next Saturday?”

“Saturday’s a pretty good day for a date,” Tamaki agreed.

The two continued walking back to the dorms, pretty unaware of the group of first years walking a little ways behind them, but close enough to see how flirty the two kept being with one another.

“Are those two together?” Mina questioned to Kirishima.

“I dunno, kind of looks like it,” Kirishima nodded.

As Nejire and Tamaki approached the dorm building, they saw that Mirio and Yuyu were still outside talking to each other. They were sitting on the grass in between the two dorm buildings.

“Oh, hey, you two!” Mirio greeted them. “Where have you two been?”

“At the bowling alley,” Nejire answered. “Did you know that Tamaki is a bowling master?!”

Tamaki flushed as the attention turned to him.

“Yeah? I’ve gone bowling with his family before. I can never beat any of the Amajikis because they won’t share their tricks with me,” Mirio replied.

“Oh, really?” Nejire smirked a little at Tamaki. Her boyfriend flushed even redder. “So, am I the only one you’ve given that secret to?” She whispered into his ear. Tamaki nodded.

“I feel like we’re missing something here,” Yuyu commented.

“It’s not much, I just know the Amajiki family secrets for good bowling,” Nejire smirked. “And quite a few carnival games.”

Mirio’s jaw dropped. “You actually gave her the secrets?!” he questioned his best friend.

Tamaki nodded.

“Hold up- were you two at the bowling alley just you two?” Yuyu interjected.

Well, now seemed as good a time as any to let these two in on the fact that they’d been together for the past week.

“Yeah, we were on a date,” Nejire declared. “Our second one, technically.”

“Unless you count having movie nights and cuddling as a date, then we would have had one every day for the past week,” Tamaki muttered.

“True. Let’s just say second official date,” Nejire replied.

Mirio and Yuyu were now silent.

“You two are together? Since when?” Yuyu finally spoke up.

“Since the night of the carnival…” Tamaki admitted.

“You’ve been together for a week and didn’t tell us?” Mirio questioned.

“Yes,” The couple said at the same time.

“So… Was the carnival your first date?” Mirio asked.

“Yeah,” Tamaki nodded.

Mirio smiled. “Good, that was my original intention anyway.”

…

“What?” Nejire was confused.

“Well, I was originally going to make up an excuse not to go so you two would be alone, but then I got sick and didn’t have to lie,” Mirio explained casually.

No one else knew what to reply to that.

Notes:

Welcome to the endnote
I kind of just want to put random little life stories in these endnotes. Really just funny things my family and I say (we're all a little weird, probably because most of us are definitely neurodivergent, undiagnosed, but there is no doubt).
So here are two random things:

Dad: Do you know how much the Aurora Borealis weighs?
Everyone else: *doesn't know*
Dad: It's pretty light

We all should have seen that coming.

Emily: My voice is dying.
Jason: Then maybe you should charge it.
Emily: With what?
Jaden, with no hesitation: Vocal chords

Watch me forget to do these things in my other fics
