Work Text:
Dennis never thought he would end up here. Three years ago he was at the lowest point of his life, barely carrying himself through medical school, surviving by stealing food and sleeping in the library or shelters. He wasn't proud of the lows he had to go to survive, he definitely wouldn't want to be back there again.
Now though his life is so much better, he's waking up lazily to the warm glow of the sun streaming through the ajar curtains. He's sprawled all over the bed as he pats both sides of the bed as he's looking for something or rather someone. With a groan he drags himself into a sitting position and groggily looks around. Jack's crutches and the leg are gone, though his running blade is still in its place. That was unusual, Jack preferred to sleep in on their shared days off, get some longer cuddles in the way they don't get working opposite shifts. Sighing he swung his legs off the bed and stood up, picking up random sweatpants and a shirt that he is almost certain isn't his.
Dressed, he steps into the hallway, immediately smelling something from the kitchen. Following the scent and faint music playing brings him into the spacious kitchen that he spent more time in that he could count by now. Before him was Jack standing over the stove and a pile of pancakes on the counter next to him. The man's phone is on the kitchen island playing something on the low volume. "Morning," Dennis sighs as he enters and paddles towards his partner. He wrapped his arms around Jack's middle, his head dropping on the shoulder of the taller man, pressing himself against the broad back.
"Good morning, pup," Abbot chuckled at the boys antics , "You should've slept longer, I would've come to get you. You're ruining my surprise, pup." He slid the last pancake off the pan into the pile of already cooling ones. Jack turned off the stove and freed himself from the smaller man's hold, but not for long. He turned around and pulled Dennis into a proper hug, on arm wrapping around his waist and the other hand cradling the blond head to his chest. Abbot pressed a kiss into the blond messy curls, inhaling the scent of his shampoo that Dennis has been consistently stealing, that forced a small chuckle out of him.
"What is the special occasion though?" Whitaker pulled away slightly and looked up at his partner with curious blue eyes. Jack smiled at him and letting go of his head, fished something out of his pocket. He held up a small vile in front of the shorter man. "Exactly two years ago I helped you get your testosterone prescription, it's a special occasion, love," Jack's voice went lower and quieter, even though there was no one else in the whole house the moment felt too private for a full volume conversation.
Dennis' eyes went wider as he looked at Abbot, then at the vial and then back at the older man. "It's been two years already?" his breath caught in his throat around the lump that was forming. He blinked rapidly, leaning forward he put his head on Jack's shoulder. "I can't believe its been so long already, I- Oh wow," he chuckled a little wet, hiding his face in the junction between Abbot's shoulder and neck. He couldn't wrapped his head around the fact that it's been already two years since he finally found a home, got to medically transition and its been almost a year since he started dating the exact man that was holding him in his strong arms and shushing quietly. "Will you do my anniversary injection?" he asked quietly, not daring to look up just yet.
Jack squeezed him tighter for just a moment and kissed his temple. "Of course, I will, pup," He pulled away from Dennis with a smile, guiding him to sit on the high chair at their kitchen island. Abbot leaned in to press a quick chaste kiss to his lips and turned away again. He gathered everything they needed, thanks to having multiple first aid kits in their home and storing Whitaker's testosterone in a medicine cabinet in their kitchen. Jack washed his hands thoroughly, drying them with the same care and precision. He stepped back towards the spot Dennis was obediently perched on, he opened the needle and drew in the contents of the vial. "Where do you want it?"
"I'm thinking into my thigh, we've done into my butt way too many times lately," Whitaker giggled, heat growing on his cheeks. He shuffled off the stool and pushed down his sweatpants enough for the spot to be clear. "You haven't been complaining much about it before, pup," Jack smirked and opened the injection needle, while Dennis opened the alcohol wipe for him. Abbot plucked the tiny wipe from its packaging and wiped along the spot on the younger man's thigh. He pulled lightly at the skin and injected the dose, Dennis disliked countdowns or questions as he learned from first couple times he has given Whitaker his T dose. Slowly he pulled out the needle, pressing the fresh alcohol swab that Dennis already opened for him. "Happy two years on T? Or whatever you kids say now," he chuckled lowly.
"Don't play an old man right now," Dennis laughed and punched the older man into his arms lightly, he rolled his eyes as he opened a band-aid for himself. After Jack removed the swab and no more blood came up he placed the plaster over the injection site. "Thank you, do i get my presents now?" He made a kissy face at his partner, earning a low huff and a sweet kiss from Jack.
"You get a breakfast made by yours truly and then we can do whatever you want," Abbot brushed the sandy blond curls away from his forehead and leaned forward to press a kiss there, "Today is your day and this is your world, my boy." He stepped away and turned Whitaker around so he would face the table. Quickly he cleaned up after them and washed his hands once again. "Okay, pup, close your eyes," Jack said with a smile so wide Dennis could hear it in his voice.
Obediently he covered his eyes, listening intently as Jack fussed behind him. He heard the clink of cutlery and plates and a lighter? Dennis shifted in his seat, curios what the older man was doing. "Okay, you can open them now," Abbot said near his ear, sending goosebumps down his spine. When Whitaker removed his hands from his face he was met with a pile of pancakes cover in maple syrup with a candle in the center of the top one. "Oh, you're ridiculous," Dennis looked at the man standing next to him and wrapped his arms around him, giggling.
"I always am ridiculous, you know me," Abbot shook his head and nudged Dennis to blow out the candle. Taking the hint Whitaker leaned slightly forward and blew out the tiny flame. "Only you can make taking hormones for two years feel like a birthday," He smiled widely and pulled his partner into another sweet and short kiss.
"It is practically a birthday. You gave Dennis Whitaker to become the man you are now two years ago and that is worth celebrating," he murmured against the blond boy's lips, immediately pulling him in another longer kiss. If he felt a tear run down Dennis' cheek, he didn't mention it, just kissed his boy more.
