Chapter Text
Surge had been lost in thought for way too long. Not that there was much else to do between the tests. The rocky wall she was leaning on hurt her back, and the dim lighting hurt her eyes. Now that she thought about it, she couldn't remember a single time that she hadn't been in pain—not that her memory was any good with Starline ripping days out whenever he wanted.
She turned to look at Kit. He was sitting still on his bunk, as always. She had always wondered how he managed to not move at all. When Surge was told to stay still, she would always find herself bouncing her leg or fidgeting with her fur.
"Yo, drippy." His head snapped in her direction. "D'ya ever wonder what the outside looks like? I mean like, we've seen it on screens and stuff, but I dont remember what it really looks like."
"Me neither," he replied, expression remaining blank. "Probably looks like the videos though." His gaze returned to the wall.
Although she didn't have much experience with people, she could tell that Kit was weird. The way that he looked at you as if you weren't even there, plus his abrupt way of speaking contrasted heavily with the stuff Starline had shown them of Sonic.
Sonic. Why was he able to be so carefree all the time? It was his fault she was in this cell, without any memory of peace or freedom. If she were to ever encounter him, she would-
A loud beeping interrupted her thought. Starline's signal for them to head to his office. She stretched, then began the walk, still fuming with anger.

"Well, if it isn't my two favorite heroes!" Starline cooed, turning in his chair to face them. "Thank you for finding the time to join me," he grinned.
Surge scoffed. "Yeah, yeah. What do you want now?"
Giggling, Starline replied. "Oh my! Forward as ever, I see~!" Tapping a button on the arm of his chair, an image appeared on the screen behind him. "Do either of you recognize this?"
The image was of a very ugly building, seemingly abandoned. The red and black paint was chipping, and the large metal door was heavily dented. Surge had no idea where this was going, or what the image was of.
Kit raised his hand. "A base created by Dr. Robotnik."
"Yes!" He replied, clapping. "And, if you know that, I suppose you're ready for your first real mission!"
Surge's eyes widened. A mission? Like- going outside? Seeing the world? Maybe even fighting Sonic? A chance to finally put her skill to use was just what she needed. Maybe, Starline would finally let them live outside of this wretched place, and become the heroes they were always meant to be.
"Oh, its so exiting, yes!" He exclaimed, snapping her out of her dreaming. "You two will be infiltraiting this abandoned base, in order to find me some expensive parts that Ivo so carelessly left out." He stood up. "We will be going right now, so get ready!"

Surge sat alone in the back of Starline's helicopter. He wanted Kit to learn how to pilot one, so Surge was left alone with the window. The view confused her. In the videos, the ground had been coated in brilliant green grass, but out of the window, she only saw grey. The sky, too, was different. Instead of being blue as she had seen, it was a deep black, with little dots of light sprinkled about.
Turning to the opposite window, she saw that a new object was in view. Two larger-than-life rocks filled the sky, lighting up the darkness with their milky glow. They lit the grey below into a shimmering white, revealing it's whispy texture. The two rocks were connected by smaller pieces, with a trail of broken shards forming a line across the sky.
"Ah, the moon," Starline's voice said from the cockpit. "Another mistake made by Sonic." He sighed. "Once you complete your mission, I hope to return it to its former glory!" His air of self-importance seemed to travel through his voice. "It used to be a sphere, you know."
Surge thought that was strange. The moon in its current state couldn't look more beautiful to her. Although, she knew Sonic only spread destruction and violence, so maybe it would be better as it was in the past.
The helicopter was now lowering down below the fluff, and onto a field of dark green, with the occasional speck of light. As they continued, she began recognizing more and more shapes—trees, bushes, rocks, and the base from earlier, much larger than she'd expected.
They landed with a thump. As she rushed to the door, she anticipated what being outside would feel like, her heart pounding.
First, she felt her boot touch soft ground. The dirt sunk under her weight, a strange feeling compared to the hard concrete she was used to. Then, she looked up. Fresh, green fields rose and fell, streching on forever. Mossy stones surrounded a nearby lake, water shining orange. The sky was being dyed brilliant pinks and yellows that Surge had never even conceptualized. And, in the middle of it all, shone a light so tremendously bright that she couldn't tear her eyes away.
"Woah." She turned to Kit. He was looking at her with a look of anticipation.
He quickly turned. "Is it as beautiful as you hoped?"
Surge grinned. "It's the most incredible thing I've ever seen!" She gestured out across the fields. "It doesn't even feel real, how beautiful it is!"
"The perfect place to defeat Sonic, no?" Starline's voice seemed to appear out of no where. "We don't have time for this. Let's get on with the mission."
Surge turned to the structure looming ahead of them. This would be another step towards killing Sonic, she reminded herself. Then, after a final glance at the area, she headed into the building.
