It's Okay If It's Not Perfect

Summary:

Chiikawa wants to make Hachiware happy.

A cake seems like a good idea—until the bakery is closed, the baking goes wrong, and the decorations turn out… not quite right.

It’s a little crooked. A little messy.

But Hachiware loves it anyway.

Sometimes, the smallest things mean the most.

Work Text:

The day starts small.

It always does.

Soft sunlight spills across the grass, warm but not too bright, and the air smells faintly sweet—like something baking somewhere far away.

Chiikawa notices it right away.

Oh… something smells nice.

They pause, nose twitching slightly, eyes drifting toward the distant buildings.

And then—

“Huh? Oh! Chiikawa!”

Hachiware’s voice.

Chiikawa turns quickly.

There he is, waving, already smiling like he always does.

Something in Chiikawa’s chest lifts.

He looks happy today.

Hachiware jogs over, holding a small bag.

“I got extra snacks! Wanna share?”

Chiikawa nods quickly.

Of course they do.

They always do.

---

They sit together under a tree.

The snacks are simple, they’re nothing fancy. They’re butter cookies- Just something small, slightly sweet, a little crumbly.

But Hachiware eats like it’s the best thing ever.

“Mm! This is really good.”

Chiikawa watches him more than they eat.

He always says that.

Even when things are just… normal.

Even when they’re not that special.

And still—he smiles like they are.

Chiikawa grips their snack a little tighter.

He’s always so kind…

A pause.

The wind blows through the meadow, rustling the leaves.

I want to do something… too.

The thought comes quietly, but once it’s there, it won’t leave.

Something nice.

Something that makes him happy.

Their eyes drift again—toward where that sweet smell came from.

And slowly…

An idea forms.

---

A cake.

The word feels big.

Important.

If I get him a cake…

Chiikawa imagines it.

A soft, fluffy cake.

Perfectly round.

Smooth white cream frosting.

Maybe little decorations.

Maybe even his name.

Hachiware’s reaction flashes in their mind—

Surprised.

Happy.

Smiling even more than usual.

“You got this for me?”

Yes.

Yes, I did.

Chiikawa’s chest fills with something warm.

They nod to themselves.

I’ll do it.

---

The walk feels longer than usual.

Each step is filled with nervous excitement.

What if he really likes it…?

What if it’s perfect…?

They reach the bakery.

The door stands in front of them.

Chiikawa pauses.

They take a breath.

Reaches out—

And pushes.

Nothing.

The door doesn’t move.

They blink.

Push again.

Still nothing.

Their eyes slowly shift upward.

A small sign hangs on the door.

Closed.

---

Silence.

The world feels… quieter. Hollow, even.

The warm feeling from before cracks slightly.

Closed…?

Chiikawa just stands there.

Staring.

But… I…

The image in their mind—the perfect cake, the perfect moment—

It wobbles.

And starts to fall apart.

A small breeze passes.

The sign swings gently.

Closed.

Closed.

Closed.

Chiikawa lowers their head.

Their grip tightens.

…I still want to do it.

The thought is softer now.

But stronger.

More stubborn.

They look at the bakery again.

Then slowly—

Turn away.

---

The store is bright.

Too bright.

There are too many choices.

Flour.

Sugar.

Eggs.

Things Chiikawa doesn’t fully understand.

They stand in the aisle, staring.

How do you make a cake…?

They hesitate.

Then they reach for something.

Pull back.

Try again.

It’s okay.

I can do it.

I just… follow what cakes are made of… right?

It’s not a perfect plan.

But it’s a plan.

And that’s enough.

---

The kitchen is quiet.

At first.

Then—

Clink.

Tap.

Spill.

Flour dusts the counter.

Then the floor.

Then Chiikawa.

They stare at their paws.

White.

Powdery.

…Oh.

They try to fix it.

It gets worse.

Eggs crack unevenly.

A few shell pieces fall in.

They panic, and try to pick them out carefully.

It’s okay… it’s okay…

Mixing is harder than expected.

The batter is lumpy.

It looks like it’s too thick.

Then too thin.

Was it supposed to be like this…?

They pause.

They really look at it.

It’ll… probably be okay.

---

Time passes.

Slowly.

Carefully.

The cake goes into the oven.

Chiikawa sits in front of it.

Watching.

Waiting.

Please turn out okay…

---

The cake comes out.

It’s… not bad.

Not perfect.

But not bad.

Chiikawa’s eyes light up just a little.

It worked…!

Relief washes over them.

For a moment—

Everything feels okay again.

Then they remember.

It needs to look nice…

---

The frosting starts smooth.

Then—

It isn’t.

It spreads unevenly.

One side is thicker than the other.

Chiikawa tries to fix it.

It gets worse.

They try to write something.

The letters wobble.

They smear.

And collapse into each other.

They freeze.

Staring at it.

…That doesn’t look right.

They try again somewhere else.

Now there are too many attempts.

Too many marks.

The cake looks… messy.

Crooked.

Uneven.

Nothing like the one they imagined.

---

Silence fills the room again.

Heavier this time.

Chiikawa steps back.

They look at it fully.

This isn’t what I wanted…

Their chest tightens.

He won’t…

They stop the thought.

But it lingers anyway.

He won’t like it.

---

They look down.

Their paws are still messy.

And their heart is sinking.

…But I made it.

A small thought.

Fragile, at that.

I made it for him.

They swallow nervously, and pick up the cake carefully.

…I’ll still give it to him.

---

Hachiware is right where he usually is.

That makes it worse.

Because everything feels normal.

Except for Chiikawa.

They walk slower than usual.

Each step is heavier.

The cake feels too big in their paws.

He’s gonna see how ugly it is-

Hachiware notices them immediately.

“Oh! Chiikawa—”

He pauses.

Eyes landing on the cake.

“Oh…?”

Chiikawa freezes.

Say something.

Explain it.

Tell him—

But they can’t.

They never can.

Their paws tremble slightly as they hold it out.

Eyes avoiding his.

It’s not very good.

I’m sorry.

I tried.

None of it comes out.

Only silence.

And Then…

Hachiware takes the cake gently.

Carefully.

Like it matters.

Like it’s important.

His eyes light up.

“Wait… you made this?”

Chiikawa flinches slightly.

It looks bad.

He can tell.

They brace themselves.

But then—

Hachiware smiles.

Wide.

Bright.

Warm.

“I’m really happy.”

Chiikawa blinks.

…Huh?

“It’s for me, right?”

Chiikawa nods slowly.

---

Hachiware looks at the cake again.

Not at the mistakes.

Not at the uneven frosting.

But at everything else.

“You even tried to write something…!”

He leans in slightly.

Grinning.

“That’s really cute.”

---

Chiikawa’s chest tightens again—

But differently this time.

Cute…?

---

“I’m gonna eat it!”

No hesitation.

No doubt.

Just excitement.

---

He takes a bite.

Pauses.

Then—

“Mm!! It’s good!”

Chiikawa stares.

…Really?

“It’s sweet!”

Another bite.

“And fluffy!”

Another.

“I love it!”

Something inside Chiikawa finally… loosens.

The tightness fades.

The worry melts.

Slowly.

Softly.

They sit together again.

Like before.

Under the tree.

Sharing.

Only this time—

The cake is uneven.

A little messy.

But it doesn’t matter.

Hachiware smiles between bites.

“We should bake together next time!”

Chiikawa looks at him.

Really looks.

And for the first time since the bakery—

They feel it again.

That warm, quiet feeling.

…I’m glad.

They don’t need to say it.

They never do.

But it’s there.

And somehow—

Hachiware understands anyway.
