Iridescence

Summary:

Flight and Bakushin at the end of a day of dance rehearsal.

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

After a long afternoon of practicing their choreography together they made their way back towards their dorms as evening fell over the academy. Outside, at the intersection where their paths would split — one to Rito, one to Miho — Bakushin turned to her offering a hand.

"Could I have one last dance?"

North Flight let out a soft chuckle. They had practiced the steps a dozen times in one of the academy's rehearsal rooms just earlier, yet she too couldn't say she had grown tired of them. How could she when Bakushin looked up at her with such earnest eyes? So she joined their hands for one final dance, the warmth of the contact a noticeable contrast to the cool spring air.

They went through the first couple step sequences, humming their song together. Sometime in the middle the street lamp above them turned on, not unlike the spotlights that would shine down on them on stage in a few days. Though unlike that time in the future, right now there was no crowd, no music, no competition. Just their soft hums and the sounds of their heels hitting the concrete in rhythmic exchanges. Sometimes ringing out together, sometimes in a trade off, other times it were only Bakushin's steps that resounded in the cool evening air as she gently moved North Fight along in a lift.

Eventually their hums and steps slowed as they moved into the final lift. With North Flight's arm around Bakushin's shoulders and Bakushin holding her steady at the waist before guiding her down into the landing the dance came to an end. They parted for a moment as North Flight spun around before joining their hands again as they walking towards an imaginary audience to taking their bow.

When North Flight stayed down in the bow, Bakushin gave her an inquisitive look, hoping she didn't get hurt in their spontaneous encore. After a moment North Flight looked up and offered her hand towards the confused girl beside her once more, hoping her eyes could communicate her feelings with the same earnesty as Bakushin's did earlier.

North Flight found that even after a day's worth of rehearsal their time together wasn't enough. Luckily, unlike the real performance it didn't have to end here and unlike a race there was no set distance they had to part after. So their last dance could still be while away.

the brainworms really got me with this.
