Chapter Text
Do you know what a hero is? Imagine one, anyone. Got the image in your head?
Good.
This hero is different. He’s the hero of heroes. The hero who saves everyone he can, a hero who makes friends.
This is the story of the world's first intergalactic hero.
But he didn’t start like that.
He started...
... like this.
“L-leave him alone!” A 4 year old child with messy green hair, freckles, big dark green eyes, and a strange device on his left wrist says as he stands in front of another kid his age. This is Izuku Midoriya.
“Hey, move it! Unless you want a piece too!” Another kid with spiky yellow hair his age cracks his knuckles, small explosions coming off of them. This is Katsuki Bakugo, Izuku’s best friend. Or should be. Right now, he and some of his other super-powered friends are trying to bully another kid, the kid Izuku is protecting right now.
“Y-you can’t just h-hurt him! That’s not nice Kacchan!” Izuku stands his ground. He keeps still in front of the scared boy behind him. But, in all honesty, he’s no better. He’s barely holding on as well.
“Oh give me a break!” Katsuki yells as he laughs and rushes at Izuku with his friends.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time something like that has happened. And neither is it the last. Izuku learned quickly that the world isn’t fair. But that isn’t the focus right now. Instead, let’s see how Izuku is doing today.
10 years later
“Watch out!” A man made out of wood yells as a giant man rushes past a big crowd of people. “Stop right there!”
“No way! Leave me alone hero!” The giant man yells back as he tries to jump away.
“Wow! That’s the Arbor Hero, Kamui Woods! His quirk, Arbor, allows him to enlarge and control his wooden body parts into strong tree branches! But it has the same properties as wood, so he’s weak to fires.” Izuku quickly writes down in his green notebook. It’s titled Future Hero Analysis #13.
“Your a real fanboy huh?” An older man says standing next to him.
“Huh? Oh yeah, I... I umm, I wana be a hero one day... so... I-I study quirks I see, he he.” Izuku says shyly as he scratches the back of his head.
“Nice. That’s some dedication right there. Best of luck to ya.”
“Thank you so much sir!” Izuku says excitedly as he writes in his notebook again and slowly follows the crowd that’s following Kamui Woods.
“Here it comes!” A girl yells as Kamui Woods jumps at the giant villain.
“Oh wow! It’s his special attack!” Izuku notes with a giant smile on his face. “The preamptive...”
Kamui Woods extends his hand and tree branches start to grow in the giant villains direction. “Lacquered Chain Prison-”
“Canyon Cannon!” An even bigger giant lady comes with a flying kick and hits the giant villain.
“Don’t worry everyone, a new hero's debut is today. I’m Mt. Lady, feel free to take pictures.~” The giant lady poses for the people below with a little wink. Obviously, the photos start flooding in like crazy.
“Oh man, another one of those heroes. Oh well, if Mt. Lady want’s to be remembered as Mt. Giant Ass, that’s her choice. But even Midnight had more dignity then that... I think... haven’t searched her up much, I gotta muster up the courage to do it some day.” Izuku rolls his eyes as he writes in his notebook. “To be fair she didn’t have a ton of choices with her Quirk. But Mt. Lady does. Her Quirk seems to be gigantification."
Izuku notes as Mt. Lady turns to her normal size. “She can control her size. Or at least switch between a giant size and a normal size. Hopefully the Square Cubic Law doesn’t hinder her. Being giant may be a simple power, but it has some, ironically, big uses. But the bigger they are, the harder they fall. But it seems her size doesn’t slow her down much. That’s definitely something to note, that’s a big advantage against other similar enlarging quirks.”
Izuku keeps writing in his notebook as we walks. “Hmm... I’m almost finished with this one. Gotta get a new one soon.” He packs the notebook in his backpack and starts running to school, a big smile on his face. “I feel like today will be a good day!”
“Alright class! Please calm and sit down.” The teacher of Izuku’s class says as everyone sits down. “Okay class. Today we’re gonna talk about what you want to do in the future. Oh who am i kidding, I know most of you want to become heroes, ain’t that right!”
The class erupts as everyone starts activating their Quirks.
“Don’t group me with the other boring extras teach!” Bakugo yells. “None of them will make it anywhere anyways. I’m gonna be the number 1 hero and surpass All Might!”
“Yes, yes Bakugo, we know your signing up for U.A.’s hero course. And in all honesty, you have a really good shoot at it too. But your not the only one who is trying for U.A. Midoriya, you also want to get into U.A. too right?” The teacher asks.
The entire class turns towards Izuku who’s sitting in the middle of class. He looks up from his notebook with a terrified expression. “U-umm... y-yeah... t-that’s right...”
After a few seconds the entire class erupts into laughter.
“H-hey! I-It’s not funny! I’m really trying! They even made it so quirkless can join too!” Izuku says.
Then Bakugo leans back on his chair and looks over his shoulder. “Are you acually serious!? You can’t become a hero, YOU DON’T EVEN HAVE A QUIRK!” Bakugo yells and the laughter becomes louder.
“Okay that’s enough class! Calm down, CALM DOWN!” The teacher tries to take back control of the class very unsuccessfully.
Izuku looks down at his notebook in defeat. It never gets easier for him. Izuku Midoriya is quirkless. Yet he still dreams of being a hero just like his biggest inspiration, the number one hero All Might. He’s been his biggest fan basically since he was born.
And another thing. Nobody notices it, but the wrist device on Izuku’s left arm crackles with just a tiny bit of energy for a split second. But it does not turn on.
As the final bell rings, just before everyone leaves their class, Bakugo walks over to Izuku and snatches his notebook out of his hands. “Hey! Kacchan give it back!”
“Oh shut up!” Bakugo extends his hand an slams it against Izuku’s face, making him unable to move to move forward or reach his notebook. “Future Hero Analysis? The hell?” Bakugo pushes Izuku back into his seat and flips through his notebook. “Jeez, this is worse then your murmurs and babbles. How do you even figure this shit out?”
“I-I’m really smart i guess.” Izuku answers. “And have way too much free time on hand.”
“Yeah! No shit Sherlock, these notes are god damn insane.” Bakugo says kinda impresed. Just as Izuku feels proud of getting a comment like that from Bakugo of all people, he uses his Quirk, Explosion, to scorch his notebook. “YEET!” Bakugo shouts as he throws the notebook out of the classrooms window and into the Koi pond outside.
“No! Kacchan what was that for!” Izuku yells at him.
“Oh come on! You don’t need that useless thing. It’s just as useless as you, Deku!” Bakugo says. Deku is an insult he uses for Izuku, due to it sounding like ‘dekunobō’ (木偶の坊), meaning ‘useless person’. “I’m just saving you the trouble. Don’t waste your time on bullshit you can’t do.” Bakugo tells him and walks away.
Izuku sighs in defeat. He packs the rest of his stuff and looks outside the window.
“Hey!” Bakugo yells as he turns to Izuku again.
“You know there might be a way for you to gain a quirk.”
Bakugo smirks. But it takes him a second to answer. Izuku thinks it’s for dramatic effect. But then Bakugo’s smile falters for a split second before he shakes his head and turns away from him.
“Maybe that freaky watch on your arm can give you powers or something. I don’t need any of that crap like the extras. And take it off, you had since we were four!” Bakugo scoffs and leaves.
Izuku sighs again and rolls his eyes. “But I can’t.” He thinks. A few minutes later he picks up his notebook from the pond. “Get out of here fishes, my future isn’t food... or it’s not supposed to be...”
“Yo Bakugo.” One of Bakugo’s friends points at Izuku at a distance. “Look, it’s Deku. Wana have another go at him?” He suggests and the other guys agree. Bakugo looks back at Izuku and shakes his head.
“Nah.” Bakugo shrugs.
“What!?” The groups jaw collectively drops. “But you always do that! What, did you suddenly grow a concious!” One guy says.
“THE FUCK I DID!” Bakugo yells. “I just... don’t need to. He’s gonna have his dream crushed when he fails to get into U.A. and I’m gonna enjoy it! I’m even gonna film that shit as a last fuck you and watch it on repeat, ha!” Bakugo laughs as he and his friends leave.
Izuku wipes the tears that formed in the corner of his eyes. He was blissfully unaware of what happened with Bakugo and his friends. His mind is going back to what Bakugo said to him. “You don’t need that useless thing. It’s just as useless as you, Deku!” He wants to not believe that. But he’s Quirkless, and weak, and always scared and plain... useless...
“A useless Deku...”
Izuku pulls his left sleeve down revealing a bulky watch like item on his wrist. It’s black and gray, and has a button on the side facing Izuku and a dial that Izuku knows he can turn, but it never does anything. The logo in the dial is a gray hourglass like shape. He wipes the new tears that formed. He looks at his notebook and holds it tightly. Izuku opens the notebook and holds it by it’s side and is planing to rip it in two. He doesn’t need it. It’s not needed. Just like him. Useless. Always...
“Useless... a useless Deku... useless... useless, useless, usless...” Izuku silently cry's and is about to pull it apart but then a voice is heard.
“Izuku Midoriya.”
“Huh?” Izuku looks to his left and spots a boy his age in full black and with a bird head with black feathers.
“Tell me that I am hallucinating and that you are not about to destroy your Magnum Opus, my friend.”
Izuku gasps and drops his notebook, not back into the pond thankfully. He then smiles widely, like life was injected back into his veins.
“Tokoyami!”
“Are you okay?” A little kid with a black bird head asks as he stands over the beaten up Izuku.
“Mmph... yeah... I’m okay... Kacchan does this sometimes.” Izuku groans as he sits up.
“Your pretty beat up.” A shadow like bird creature hands him his glasses.
“I know.” He sits up and sees the shadow creature. But instead of screaming or running in fear, his eyes widen in awe.
“WOW! Who are you!? I-Is this your Quirk!?” Izuku asks with a smile, surprising both the kid and the shadow.
“Oh, yes it is. This is Dark Shadow, my Quirk.” The kid answers. “Your not scared of him?”
“Why would I, he’s awsome! Or she? Whatever, your Quirk is awesome either way!” Izuku stands up. “I’m Izuku Midoriya!” He extends his hand towards the other boy.
“I am Fumikage Tokoyami, pleasure to meet you Midoriya-san.” Tokoyami shakes his hand. “You are the first person to really talk to me normally. And not to mention my face.”
“Oh, well, my moms a nurse and my dad is a scientist, so i see a lot of weird stuff. Your really normal to me.” Izuku smiles.
“I see. Well... it’s nice to see someone not caring about my appearance.” Tokoyami smiles. “And thank you for saveing me Midoriya-san. You are really brave.”
“No problem, your the first person that doesn’t make fun of my Quirklessness. And I have to be right? I want to be a hero just like All Might!” Izuku proclaims.
“I don’t see that as anything bad or weird. Well, good luck with your dream, maybe our paths will cross once again somewhere down the line. I too, want to be a hero one day.” Tokoyami says.
“Great! I’m sure you’ll make it one day too!” Izuku laughs.
“Can i ask you a question, Midoriya-san?” Tokoyami asks.
“Oh, sure, what’s up?” Izuku tilts his head.
“Would you... like... to... hang out with me? I... do not, in all honesty... have many friends...” Tokoyami admits as he turns away in embarrassment.
“Yeah! I’d love to hang out with you! Let’s play superheros! Here, I’ll be the villain this time.” Izuku agrees.
Tokoyami chuckles. “Alright then. Prepare yourself villain, for I will strike you down!”
“Muahaha! You will never defeat me hero! I am unstopable!” Izuku laughs and runs and Tokoyami follows him.
Present day
“Tokoyami-kun! It’s been so long. But gosh, it’s good to see a truly friendly face, or umm, beak in your case heh.” Izuku laughs at his bad joke.
Tokoyami chuckles. “Good to see you too Midoriya-san. Now, will you tell me what were you going to do just now?”
Izuku sighs as he closes his notebook. “Nothing. Just... ugh, I’m rethinking my choice of U.A.”
Tokoyami raises his brow. “Why? You do have the grades and the heroic spirit to make it. And you are one of the smartest people I know. So why would you give up like that?”
“It’s just... I’m Quirkless... and this dumb watch still does nothing, and I can’t find any answers on it... so how am i suppose to become a hero? I don’t know... what to do. I want to help others but... i just don’t have the means to. I’m a useless Deku...” Izuku says in defeat.
“If you don’t think you can be a hero, go to the support course.” Tokoyami put’s his hand on one Izuku’s shoulder. “Your bright brain could create supporting gears for heroes that could be essential, making the unseen be finally seen, or just helping those out of their prime power. And if that doesn’t work, there are plenty of things you can do. You have options Midoriya-san. If you don’t belive in yourself, then belive in the me that belives in you.”
Izuku looks up at Tokoyami and smiles with tears in his eyes. “Thanks... Tokoyami...” He hugs him. “I... I needed that...” Tokoyami smiles and hugs Izuku back. “Also was that a Gurren Lagan refrence?”
“A what refrence?” Tokoyami asks.
“Hmm... nothing. Nevermind.”
After the two friends hug, Tokoyami suggests. “Now, let’s go eat something. I think we have quite a lot of catching up to, right Midoriya-san?”
Izuku wipes his tears away and nods. “Yeah, let’s go!”
A few minutes later Izuku and Tokoyami enter a burger joint called Greek Diner. They find a small booth by the window in the corner and order a simple meal each.
“Sorry, I don’t have a ton of money on me.” Izuku laughs nervously.
“That’s perfectly fine. Plus, I like this diner anyways, sometimes these small simpler ones are that much more richer. Also, I invited someone.” Tokoyami reassures him.
“Huh? Really? Who?” Izuku asks as he looks at where they were gonna seat. He’s met with another boy about their age, possibly slightly older. He has periwinkle-blue colored fur, black markings on his face, pointed ears and yellow and orange eyes.
“Greetings Midoriya, long time has passed since our last meeting.”
“Rook!? Oh man I haven’t seen you in ages!” Izuku says as he sits down next to him.
Young Izuku and Tokoyami were talking and eating their snacks when Rook approached them.
“Hello there” He waves.
“Hi!” Izuku waves back. “I’m Izuku Midoriya, who are you?”
“My name is Rook Blonko. I’m somewhat new here.”
“Pleased to meet you.” Tokoyami speaks. “I’m Tokoyami Fumikage.”
“Do you need something?” Izuku asks.
“Yes. I was wondering if there is a possibility I could sit next to you two and eat with you. Other kids find me... weird...” Rook admits.
“Yeah sure, we don’t mind it! Right Tokoyami?” Izuku turns to Tokoyami.
“Of course not. Your more then welcome to join us.” Tokoyami says.
“Yay! New friend!” Izuku cheers as Rook sits next to them.
From afar, Bakugo was watching. “Tsk, stupid Deku. Making a squad of other useless people? I can’t even call the blue dude a person. Whatever, they are all useless anyways.” He thinks.
Back in the present
“Nice to see you again Rook. How were your travels? How many martial arts did you learn, your dream is to learn as many of them right?” Izuku asks.
“Oh, you remember.” Rook smiles. “I would say my travels were quite productive.”
“And what's with the clothes?" Tokoyami asks.
"Oh, my uncle allowed me to see the police station where he works at, so i dressed for the ocasion." Rook explains.
“You look great, it suits you. Hey, Tokoyami, I wanted to ask, how did your exams go? For U.A. that is.” Izuku asks.
Tokoyami thinks for a bit. “Well, I hope for the best. I do wish I had your phone number so I could call you for tutoring, it would help me greatly in my preparations.”
“I acually did those tests too.” Rook says.
“Huh!? Rook you wana join U.A.?” Izuku asks.
Rook nods. “It is the best hero school, and I do want to be a hero.”
“Well, I think both of you aced them. Your plenty smart. I... maybe not so much, I think I flunked them... hard.” Izuku admits.
“Which you always say and then always get almost 100% on those tests you think you did awful.” Tokoyami says. “You really should trust yourself more Midoriya-san.”
“I agree with Fumikage.” Rook speaks up. “Your defenetly smart Izuku. And I’m sure you did well.”
Izuku smiles and almost cry's. He’s so glad to have friends like them.
“Izuku, I have a quetion. About your watch.” Rook says. “Is it still turned off?”
“Oh, yeah. No, still just a hunk of junk.” Izuku taps on the dial of the watch. “I still have no idea where it came from. I definitely wasn’t born with it. But I don’t remember anything of how I got it. Although... I did get to go through some of dad’s old stuff. So I do know what it’s called.”
Tokoyami and Rook look at each other and then back at Izuku.
"It's called... the Omnitrix."
