(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Where is it?” Lovro asked himself out loud while he rummaged through his closet. He could have sworn he put his jacket back after coming home last night. He walked into the kitchen to double check if he had misplaced it, but his jacket was nowhere to be seen. With a quiet sigh he grabbed his phone and opened his messages to text his boyfriend.

Lovro (10:03): did you see my jacket? the black one with the white paisley print?

Ivan (10:03): No. Haven’t seen it

Lovro (10:04): are you sure?

Ivan (10:05): 100%

Lovro (10:06): alright, i must have lost it somewhere then

Lovro (10:06): are we still on for tonight?

Ivan (10:07): Yes, I can’t wait to see you :)

Lovro (10:07): ❤️

Lovro shook his head. He must have just put it somewhere he couldn’t remember. He walked back into his room and grabbed another jacket from his floor, put it on and headed out the door.

Ivan lied. He had seen the jacket. In fact, he was standing in front of his mirror at this very moment, wearing it, modelling it.

The jacket fit him a little snug, while it always looked a bit baggy when Lovro wore it. Ivan pulled on the sleeves to see if that would make them stretch, but they didn’t budge. He touched the fabric, smelled the jacket and sheepishly smiled to himself. The scent of smoke and vanilla had become like home to him. A bit of a weird sentiment, but it reminded him of his boyfriend.

Still wearing the jacket, Ivan wandered into the kitchen. He didn’t care that he was inside. He wanted to be close to his boyfriend while he wasn’t physically near him. Maybe he shouldn’t have lied to Lovro, but when he saw the jacket hanging over the back of a chair in Lovro’s kitchen, he just couldn’t resist. He had to take it. He loved things that belonged to Lovro. Things that smelled like him. Felt like him.

So he kept the jacket on and didn’t take it off for the rest of the day.

Not when he made tea. Not when he went on a walk. Not even when he curled up on the couch and dozed off to the sound of Josipa Lisac softly playing in the background, wrapped in the comfortable fabric and the feeling of being held.

He was woken up by the sound of his phone. Ivan groaned and grabbed his phone, quickly sitting up when he noticed what time it was.

18:33. He was supposed to meet Lovro thirty-three minutes ago.

Lovro (18:06): where are you???

Lovro (18:12): didn’t we agree to meet up at 18:00?

Lovro (18:16): ivannnn why do you always do this

Lovro (18:24): helloooooo earth to ivan

Lovro (18:31): i’m giving you 10 more minutes to reply or i’m leaving

Lovro (18:33): i’m serious or you’re not getting any kisses for the rest of the week

“Shit,” Ivan muttered, his thumbs already flying across his phone screen.

Ivan (18:34): I’m so sorry. I fell asleep and didn’t set an alarm

Ivan (18:35): Please don’t leave, I’m on my way

Ivan (18:35): Save me a kiss, I know you won't be able to resist me ❤️

He jumped up, quickly put on his shoes, grabbed both helmets and bolted out the door. He nearly tripped on the stairs in his rush but made it outside in one piece.

Ivan arrived about fifteen minutes later and immediately spotted Lovro from a distance. He looked adorably lost, like he often did, glancing around and fidgeting with his hands. Ivan let himself admire his boyfriend for a moment before hopping off the Tomos and walking towards him.

“Lovro!” he called while walking to him with a spring in his step. Lovro immediately looked up and started beaming, but his smile dropped just as quickly. Ivan wondered what the reason was behind the sudden change of emotion.

“Why are you wearing that?” Lovro asked with a confused frown on his face. Ivan looked down and noticed to his horror that he never took off Lovro’s jacket that he had been wearing since this morning. He froze mid-step, shoulders stiffening, suddenly very interested in the ground.

“Ivan? Care to explain why you’re wearing my jacket?” Lovro asked in a soft voice. Ivan finally managed to look at Lovro again and noticed that he was grinning.

“I mean,” Lovro started, stepping closer and tugging lightly at the jacket’s collar, pulling Ivan towards him, “it looks good on you. Maybe a bit too small, but you make it work.” He tilted his head, a teasing glint in his eyes. “But of course it looks better on me, don’t you think?”

Ivan groaned softly and leaned forward, resting his forehead against Lovro’s shoulder. “This is so embarrassing,” Ivan said softly. Lovro laughed under his breath, wrapping his arms around Ivan and pulling him closer.

“It kind of is,” he murmured, “I distinctly remember you telling me this morning that you hadn’t seen my jacket. You were one hundred percent sure even, those are hard odds to beat.”

Ivan pulled back just enough to look at him, staring into Lovro’s eyes for a few seconds too long. Lovro’s cheeks flushed as he glanced away. Ivan exhaled, lifting his hands to cup Lovro’s face before he started rambling.

“You’re always so warm, and sometimes when you’re not with me it just gets so quiet and then I start missing you a lot,” Ivan said helplessly, the words spilling out before he could stop himself. His thumbs softly brushed over Lovro’s cheeks, lingering there like he was afraid to let go.

“Wearing this jacket just felt like a hug,” he added, a little bit more quietly now. “It felt like I could turn around and you would be next to me.”

He let out a small, embarrassed laugh, eyes flicking away for a moment before returning to Lovro’s face. “It’s stupid, I know. It’s just a jacket, but it smells like you, and it still holds your shape a little,” he hesitated, swallowing, “it made everything feel less empty.”

Ivan exhaled slowly, his forehead almost brushing Lovro’s. “I guess I just wanted to feel close to you. Even when you weren’t there to hold.”

Lovro’s expression softened instantly, “You know that I am always here, jacket or no jacket.” Ivan nodded and smiled softly, “I know. I will always know. I just love having you near me, even if it's just something that reminds me of you.”

Lovro smiled at Ivan. It was one of those big smiles that showed off his adorable little tooth gap. Ivan couldn't help but smile back, playfully pinching Lovro's nose while doing so.

After staring into each other's eyes for an embarrassing amount of time, Lovro finally leaned in and kissed him softly. The kiss was brief, but long enough to linger.

Ivan had a good feeling there would be more of that tonight.

After their date, they squeezed onto the Tomos together. The seat was too small for the both of them, as usual, but neither of them cared. Being close together, in any way possible, was something that they cherished.

Lovro wrapped his arms tightly around Ivan, pressing close. After a moment, he leaned in, inhaling softly before pressing a soft kiss to Ivan’s back.

“You know,” he murmured, smiling against the fabric, “the jacket kind of smells like you now.” Ivan snorted, “Then I guess it’s our shared jacket now.” Lovro laughed and Ivan felt it vibrate through his entire body. It was a wonderful feeling.

And it was moments like this that made Ivan feel like the luckiest person alive. Having Lovro by his side was all that he needed.
