“Yeah, well, you look like shit,” Ivan shoots back before collapsing back into the chair. “I’m serious, what the hell were you doing? And don’t lie to me, I already spoke to the doctors.”
“Why do you care?” Lovro says. “And what are you even doing here?” Now that the initial shock horror has worn off, all Lovro can feel - aside from intense, uncomfortable pain all over his body - is pure confusion.
Ivan looks at him, then, gaze heavy and significant. “Turns out I’m still your emergency contact.”
[two years after their breakup, lovro is sure he's removed every trace of ivan from his life, until the aftermath of an accident reminds him that he missed something very important]

Summary
Lovro inhales sharply at the contact, as if he’s suddenly run out of air and is desperate to find some, his mouth falling open slightly. It’s almost a wince. “Sorry,” Ivan says, “Does it hurt?” He hates to think that he’s hurt Lovro even more, but maybe it’s telling that even a touch that he thought to be gentle is somehow dangerous.
Slowly, almost imperceptible, Lovro shakes his head. He swallows, his voice shaking when he answers, “No.” It’s closer to a breath than a word. Ivan doesn’t move his hand. “It doesn’t hurt at all.”
Ivan wonders if, maybe, they’re not talking about the bruise anymore.

Summary
Ema hums. “What do you want, Sonja?” she whispers, even though she thinks she knows the answer.
“Something new,” Sonja says. “Different.”
“Better?” It takes everything in Ema not to sound too smug.
Sonja shrugs, but a smirk plays at the corner of her mouth and Ema wants to taste it. “Maybe.” Then, “Probably.”

Summary
With more care and attention than Lovro knows what to do with, Ivan starts making miniscule strokes of black, slowly building them up into thicker shapes and lines, until Lovro can’t help but laugh in recognition.
“Is that a bat?”
Ivan hums in assent, and the slight twitch of his lips suggests that he isn’t going to repeat the word, knowing full well that Lovro will tease him as he always does. All in love, of course.

Summary
Home is a generous word for the space they share. Home implies - Kit thinks of warm sunshine through a kitchen window. Bread baking on the windowsill. Home is for the living. This isn't like that. Lair is such a strong word, laden with melodrama and seediness in a way that doesn't feel quite right. It's the place where Kit sleeps. Where Jade lives. Where Kit curls into Jade cool in her coffin at the break of each dawn, and where Kit wakes every evening. Their eternal resting place.
Kit slips in the front door in the hours before dawn, smelling like cheap liquor and blood and sex. Jade is waiting for her. She's reading in the nook on the landing; ankles crossed as she sits in the tasteful vintage armchair arranged there for just this purpose. In her hands is a small leather-bound volume that looks old, but well-loved, well-cared for. Just like everything else in this space.
"Did you eat?" Jade asks. Her voice is calm and even. She is the still eye to Kit's hurricane, ever-steady.

Summary

“Because I never stopped.”There are some things that stay even after the leaving. Even after Ivan has taught himself not to reach for Lovro anymore. In crowded rooms and empty kitchens, in unanswered messages and old habits, they keep finding each other anyway.
Or: a kolacic au wherein they have been broken up for a year, and life somehow drags them back together at the cost of heartbreaks and realizations.
