Work Text:

“Just how inappropriate can you get?”

Yuki stared, the corner of her mouth twitching, having not expected that response from the guy she’d decided to give chocolates to on Valentine’s Day, as he now glared at her turquoise eyes, screaming for her to get lost as she stood there with the handmade chocolates held in the palm of her hand.

“Well?”

“Who else are you going to get to love you?” Yuki said, continuing to hold the bag.

He continued to glare, then said, “I can easily burn you to ash with my Quirk, so fucking get lost.”

“Doesn’t the fact you’re not…”

“The fact I’m not means I don’t think you’re worth wasting my Quirk on,” the guy said. “You don’t even know my name, or anything about me.”

“I could easily blab that there’s a Villain living here to the Pro Heroes,” Yuki blurted out.

And then she was inside, ushered in after a quick glance around to make sure nobody just heard what she said, the door slamming behind her. “Don’t think this is…” And then he reached out for the chocolates, resulting in her heart beating firmly in her chest, thinking—

Except he turned the chocolate she made him into a lump of coal and tossed it into the trash. “Let’s make this clear, you’re being super inappropriate, a high schooler trying to date a grown ass man. Find someone your own age to give chocolates to, but get out…”

“If you don’t date me, I’ll blab that you’re…”

“Are you really wanting me to kill you?” the guy asked.

“I want to trade phone numbers.”

“Get out. I shouldn’t have invited you in, but you think getting me arrested is going to win you points, brat?” the man said, shoving her back out. “What was I even…” And then the door slammed.

…

Everything started when she saw his patchwork face, her mind registering him as a bad boy, but she turned to her high school classmates, who noted how handsome the stranger was despite the scars, while wondering about what his tragic past must be, and—

“I’m going to make him my husband.”

“Really, Yuki?”

“He needs saving, and a homely touch in his life,” Yuki blathered, despite being the least suitable for being a housewife, given she’d never cooked a single meal in her life, relying on her classmates to get her through the classes involving cooking, though she’d made chocolate every year for whoever her latest crush was, and—

Thus, she ended up making him chocolate, but not before stalking the man, finding out where he lived, his routine, and—

Upon being rejected, she didn’t hesitate in sending the information in, making sure to let it be known they would need the number two hero to go in after that person, and indeed, as she watched from the shadows, the number two hero did in fact show up, and Yuki thought she’d gotten her sweet revenge, that things—

Everything exploded in flames across the street, though said flames were soon put out.

“Wait? Is he going to be carted away? So I can visit him in prison?”

…

“Too soon,” Dabi thought as Endevour broke into his apartment. “And just because of a girl?”

Endevour was livid, and while Dabi did make an attempt to use his flames on him—

It was an abandoned building, Dabi was the only tenant, so Endevour came in as he did, a blazing inferno didn’t surprise him, but the ceiling coming down on them—

Dabi turned, caught off guard, expecting the building to collapse on top of him—

Except it didn’t.

Dabi found himself on the floor, Endevour between him and the ceiling of the room above, which the man shrugged off, although there was blood running down his face, and—

“No. This…” Dabi stared, horrified, his plans suddenly feeling like naught.

“I have to take you in,” Endevour said. “But I’d prefer to do it with you in one piece.”

“Right,” Dabi said. “Less paperwork.”

“Less..” And then Endevour paused. “Right.” A huge hand clamped over Dabi’s arm as the man pulled Dabi right from the fire, suppression cuffs on him, shoving Dabi into the police wagon rather than getting himself checked out.

“Great. Haven’t yet committed any heinous crimes, and the old man’s got me arrested. And for what?”

…

“You want to see…” Endevour looked at the girl who the police brought in because she filed the report on the fire Quirk user he was going to interrogate, because, according to them, something was off, way off, about the situation.

The girl in question was only part of that equation; apparently, her wanting to see the guy either indicated severe Stockholm syndrome, which didn’t seem possible given she’d never been reported as kidnapped for such a thing, or she’d purposefully made up the allegations.

“No,” he said, turning to the interview room.

“Wait. Endevour…”

And there was the young man, boots on the table, hands restrained, staples all over his body.

Endevour couldn’t help but grimace at the sight. “So, do you know what you’ve been accused of?”

“I’m not speaking with you,” the young man said, his facial features contorting wildly. “This case doesn’t involve you.”

“I’m the one who brought you in, remember?”

“On what charges?” the young man hissed. He now sat up straight, looking very angry, smoke coming from the corners of his mouth, while Endevour remembered—

He’d been sure the young man looked up at him, absolutely horrified to see the burning beam had fallen on him. In reality, there were so many other ways to have handled the situation, now that Endevour thought of it, without saving the assumed Villain. “Right. He’s assumed to be a Villain.”

“If there aren’t any…”

A folder was passed to Endevour, the police officer looking pale, and Endevour expected crimes, for the girl had outed the young man in front of him as a Villain, only—

His eyes widened, and he looked at the officer. “There has to be a mistake.”

The young man stiffened, eyes widening, then narrowing once realization hit him that—

“Fuck.”

“Language,” Endevour said, on instinct.

“You’ve no right to…”

“Seems I’ve every right, but then you already know that, don’t…” Endevour’s eyes closed. “This can’t be right.”

“The DNA…” the officer said.

“We found his jaw. There’s no way…” Endevour took a deep breath, turning back to the young man in front of him. “Why? Why if you’re alive…”

“Fuck off.”

Endevour stared. “Toya.”

“Da-bi.” The young man looked away.

“Stop pretending there isn’t a DNA match,” Endevour snapped. “Why didn’t you come…”

“What home?” Toya snapped, turning to look at him. “As if you wanted me.”

“Toya.”

“Don’t…” Smoke came from Toya’s mouth.

Endevour stared, then, “Quirk suppressants.”

“We’re only supposed to…”

“This is a medical emergency. His Quirk has nearly killed him before, so please,” Endevour said. “He’s not yet twenty, so I have the legal authority to request this.”

To which Toya stiffened. “No. No, no, no. You can’t…”

“Look at yourself!” Endevour snapped. “It’s exactly what I was afraid of!”

“You…”

“And this time, not just your Quirk, but mine added into the bloody mix,” Endevour said, looking at the bandages.

“Huh?” Toya glared, then. “What the hell are you talking about?”

“You bloody well know…” Endevour snapped, his flames flaring, but then he took a deep breath, drawing them in, extinguishing them. “No. I promised myself. That’s what I’d always refrain from…”

To which a string of curses went off.

Endevour glared. “You are not heat-resistant. Remember?”

“To my flames. To my bloody flames. You’re acting like I’m not resistant to your…”

“Because you’re not!” Endevour said.

Toya stared, looking calm as the officer came in with the injection. “Oh.” He glared at the officer. “I don’t want that.”

“Toya.”

“Stop being a fucking helicopter parent!” Toya snapped, only for his eyes to widen as the needle went in. He shook his head. “No. No, please. Don’t. Don’t cut off my Quirk. Why. Why do you…”

“You think a parent likes seeing their child hurt?” Endevour hissed out.

“Stop pretending that you care!” Toya snapped out. He took a deep breath. “The moment I turn twenty!”

“Not if your mental state is deemed…”

“You wouldn’t dare! You…” And then came the sob as Toya pressed a hand to his forehead. “No. No, you would. Why do you hate me?”

“Toya. I don’t…”

“I get that I can’t fulfill that dream of yours, okay!”

Endevour stiffened. “Is that why? Is that why you didn’t…”

“I didn’t because I’m planning on burning your whole world down, old man! Starting with Shoto.”

Endevour’s eyes widened, then, calmly. “You’re not helping yourself here.”

“Meaning?”

“You just admitted you still want to kill Shoto.”

“Because it will hurt you,” Toya said. “It’s the only thing…”

Endevour stiffened, watching the blood come down as Toya laughed maniacally.

“You didn’t feel anything when you lost me. You wouldn’t feel anything if it were anybody else.”

“That’s not…” Endevour took a deep breath. “You wouldn’t believe me if I claimed otherwise.”

“Fuck, no.”

“And what about your mother? Are you aiming at hurting her as well? Fuyumi? Natsuo?” Endevour watched. “Please. Please let there be some of that boy I remember in there.”

“That…” And then Toya slid down. “Right. Mom. Where is she? I didn’t see her at the house when…”

“What?” Endevour’s eyes widened. “When did you…”

Toya shrugged. “I don’t keep track of time.”

“Toya”

“I just know I was sixteen, and I saw that damn shrine. Is it Natsuo or Fuyumi who burns incense there?”

“Me. I’m the one who…”

Toya turned. “You? You don’t give a shit. Not about any of us. Normal parents hug their kids, you know, but you never hugged Fuyumi or Natsuo, or that tool of yours.”

“How would that be fair to you?”

Toya stared. “Don’t pretend…”

“What do you not understand about not being heat-resistant?”

“What does that have to do with anything!” Toya stood, his eyebrow twitching. “What does that have to do with not touching me except to…” And then he paused, his body trembling. “You stopped touching me, outside of when I was in trouble for…”

And then Toya slumped forward, burying his face in his arms. Endevour frowned, then, concerned because Toya wasn’t moving, “Toya?”

“You’re an idiot?”

“Excuse me?” Endevour asked.

Toya lifted his head, shedding tears of blood, which definitely alarmed Endevour. A hand wiped him away. “I’m not completely heat-resistant, you know.”

Endevour stared. “Toya. I don’t know why you think you’ve any heat resistance, but the doctor was very clear.”

“Screw him,” Toya said, letting out a sigh. “Maybe he’s the one I need to go after.”

“Toya!” Endevour snapped. “What the hell is going on in that head of yours?”

Toya held up his hands, looking suddenly tired, as if the fight had gone out of him. “I give.”

“Toya.”

“You could have just fucking told me you were afraid of burning me with your own Quirk, you know.”

“That…”

“Obviously never crossed your mind,” Toya said, then swallowed. “You’re keeping Shoto away from me. That wasn’t just because of the stupid level of stupid I pulled back when I was eight, was it?”

Endevour stared.

“You’re afraid he’ll burn me as well,” Toya said, voice trembling. “Aren’t you?”

“Toya. I’m sorry. I…”

“I’m telling you. It’s not a complete lack of heat resistance,” Toya said.

“You’re saying that, looking like…” Endevour said. “Why couldn’t you just not use your Quirk?”

Toya placed a hand on his chest. “Because it’s part of who I am!” He swallowed. “And did you ever fucking consider what would happen if…” He sucked in his breath, then glanced away. “Never mind.”

“Toya.”

“I’m not a crybaby like I used to be, despite the crap I’m leaking right now,” Toya snapped. “I’m definitely not going to…”

“Toya, can you just be honest with me for once?”

“Honest? This coming from you?” Toya snapped. Then, “I fucking self-combusted because I was a fucking crybaby who couldn’t control his fucking emotions, you fucking…”

And then his mouth snapped shut. Endevour sat back. “You.”

“You didn’t come. I kept telling myself you were running late, that something came…” Toya said, and then he paused, sucking in his breath. “Something did come up. What fucking came up?”

“That,” Endevour said, eyes narrowing. “You need not worry about…” And then he paused. “It wasn’t your fault.”

“What the…” Toya rolled his eyes and let his forehead rest. “What the hell? Why are you…”

“I mean, what am I going to tell you? I don’t want you. Or Shoto, for that matter. I don’t want either of you blaming yourselves.”

“Shoto, Shoto, Shoto,” Toya muttered, tugging at the locks he’d dyed black. “He…”

“Your mother is currently in the mental ward of a hospital,” Endevour said. He watched Toya stiffen, then sit up. “She hurt Shoto.”

“That…” Toya’s eye twitched, getting that look on his face as if he were thinking. “How can you not blame me?”

“What?”

“Do you know the crap I said to her that day? The way I looked at her before…” Toya worried his lip, then purposefully shoved his finger in there, as if to stop himself. “I’m sorry. I…”

“You were thirteen,” Endevour said. “I’m sure your mother understands, just as I’m sure she doesn’t blame you.”

“How? Quirk’s marriage. Fucking…”

“I still know your mother. Blame me all you want. It was her idea to have Fuyumi so you wouldn’t be alone.”

“And whose idea was it to have more kids?”

“It was my idea to have Shoto, because I thought…” Endevour. “I wanted to kill that dream so you’d stop burning yourself.”

“Sure,” Toya said. “You seem to have, like, always forgotten about Natsuo.”

Endevour’s face turned red. “Uh. Natsuo. He, uh…” He let out a cough. “He’s the result of…”

Toya stared. “Fuyumi was born so I wouldn’t be alone? And Natsuo was born because you two…” And then his cheeks and ears turned red. “Oh, fuck.”

“That, well. Please don’t tell him.”

Toya frowned, then, “Fuck.” He opened his mouth. “You had Shoto to stop me from burning myself?”

“It was stupid, I know, but you weren’t listening. The only other choice…”

“What was your other choice? Do tell me, oh great Endevour,” Toya snapped.

“Institutionalizing you,” Endevour said, and then his eyes clamped shut. “I’m sorry. I…” He took a deep breath. “I never wanted…”

“Am I going to be institutionalized now?” Toya asked. “Given I’m still….”

“I don’t want to,” Endevour said, his eyes opening. “Just like I didn’t want to send your mother away. Please. Don’t force me to do so.”

“Do it.”

Endevour stared at Toya, horrified.

“I need help. I’m going to admit I need help, but I’m not forcing you to,” Toya said, bowing his head. “Instead, I’m asking.”

Endevour stared, then swallowed. “You. You’ve always been the most like Rei, you know.”

“That…” Toya flinched.

“You’re everything I love about her, Toya. From the moment you were born.”

“Okay. I think…” Then Toya frowned. “Uh, that still doesn’t answer what I’m being charged with. I mean, outside admitting I’ve the urge to kill Shoto.” Toya paused. “You’re going to get me help? I really don’t want to…”

“I know,” Endevour said. “I should have helped you deal with your emotions better. There are so many things I’d want to change if I could go back and redo them knowing what I know now.”

“Yeah, but the charges…” Toya looked confused.

…

“Restraining order?” Yuki stared. “Why? What did I…”

“Be glad we’re not charging you with filing a false police report, but Endevour is open to filing such charges in the future if you do not respect the restraining order.”

“Why is the number two Pro Hero seeking out a restraining order against me?” Yuki frowned, finding herself confused.

“It’s a restraining order to keep you away from any member of his family,” the officer said, “And has nothing to do with the fact you’ve been stalking a member of his family.”
