Work Text:

When Nami woke to find she was on an island in the sky instead of on grove 1 in the Sabaody archipelago, her first thought was that she'd be fine. She had always been fine on her own, and this was no different. At least, that was what she kept telling herself throughout the year as the feeling of missing the crew, well one member in particular, slowly crept into her heart. It's not like it was labeled anything, but ever since Luffy had saved her from Arlong all those months ago, they had grown closer.

Most of the time, Luffy would sit on the floor of her bedroom, next to her desk, and listen to the soft scrape of her pencil as she practiced drawing different maps of the East Blue. He'd often have his elbows resting on his knees, so his hands dangled freely. The straw hat that she'd repaired numerous times would be tilted across his face. Nami would be sitting at the desk, her hair pulled back from her face, humming softly as she drew. They would sit like that for hours. Sometimes, Luffy would ask her to talk about maps; not really understanding it, but loving the way she came alive when she talked about the things she loved.

Still, Nami thought she had mastered being away from her friends--away from Luffy--it had already been a year after all. That is, until one sunny afternoon, Nami overheard a conversation between some of the wizards. They were talking about the island they were currently stationed above for research, gossiping about how many people claimed to have found their love in the town they'd gone into. Nami felt this sad ache bloom in her chest at their words. She missed everyone on the Thousand Sunny, but most of all, she missed Luffy, and found herself thinking back to the last time she and Luffy had a moment before the warlord Kuma separated them all.

A couple of nights before they reached the archipelago, Luffy had knocked on her door. It wasn't unusual for them, but Nami had been a bit concerned about her captain ever since he'd lost his shadow, his soul basically, and then had it put back when they were on Thriller Bark. The same thing had happened to their newest crew member, Brook, but he had been a revived skeleton for decades before his shadow had been taken. She'd be more concerned if he wasn't crazy.

When Nami granted Luffy permission to enter, he found her reading an atlas in bed. Unlike her usual sleeping attire of silky nightgowns, Nami was wearing a shirt and some lounge shorts, having felt like wearing something different every so often after her stay at Geko Moriah's mansion. The blankets of her bed were messily piled around her in a comfortable nest.

"Hey Luffy, what's up?" She asked him as he closed the door.

Luffy coughed into his fist to clear his throat and asked "can I lay with you a bit?"

"Sure." Nami said with zero hesitation. Luffy climbed into the bed behind her and began wrapping his limbs in gentle coils around her body. Nami leaned back into him, pressing them against the big fluffy pillows. She could feel Luffy relax, as if he'd been holding himself tightly for a long time.

Nami readjusted the atlas she'd been reading on her lap so she could keep at it in her new position. She could feel Luffy snaking his fingers in her hair, letting her silky ginger hair slip through his fingers. If she wasn't careful, she would surely fall asleep like this. Although, the more she thought about it, the more she thought Luffy wouldn't be that opposed.

Luffy wasn't anything at all like the guys she'd had flings with during her time under Arlong when she was out trying to pay off her debt. He didn't seem interested in the usual things like seeing her naked or anything like that. Sometimes when they were out exploring towns on islands or hanging out on the deck he'd hold her hand or kiss her softly on the mouth, but that was it. Oddly enough, Nami was actually satisfied with just that. Luffy had shown that he would go the mile for her, more than once so she didn't have a reason to doubt his devotion.

Nami closed her eyes and leaned in to the feeling of Luffy playing with her hair until something tapping on her shoulder brought her out if her memory. The ache was still there, a steady throb now. She opened her eyes to one of the wizards looking at her with concern since she had been standing against the side of library for a while. She quickly smiled and reassured him that she was fine and continued her way back to her house. The whole time, she had her hand to her heart thinking about how she needed to grow stronger so she could keep standing by Luffy.
