While sailing through the new world, and coming up with a strategy to take down one of the four emperors--the Straw Hats, and their current allies the Heart Pirates led by Captain Law--had just encountered a Sea King. The beast had risen up from beneath the head of the Thousand Sunny, sending the ship sloshing backwards through choppy waves. Without thinking, the captains worked side by side to defeat the creature, which made the perfect base for a feast. Luffy, covered in scratches, laughed from one of the masts, excited to have an excuse to celebrate and eat a lot of meat.
Ever since the Straw Hats had gotten back together on Sabaody, they had been learning new things about each other they had missed over the last two years. One such thing was Luffy's new drinking habit. Like any pirate, Luffy consumed large amounts of alcohol, but since they got back together, the amount he drank and how often throughout the day, was on par with Zoro. After all, Luffy had fought in the war and lost a lot after they had all been separated. On top of that, the more he drank, the more loose he became with showing affection.
It wasn't like their captain never told them they did a good job or that he liked sailing the seas with them. And everyone knew that Luffy would go to the ends of the earth for any of his crew or friends. Yet it seems like he took their absence much harder than they realized. See, once Luffy got more than eight beers worth of alcohol in his system, he liked to give little kisses of appreciation. nothing outrageous, but he'd curl his arm around his friends and kiss their temples, or sometimes their cheeks. Afterwards, he'd giggle and hiccup with a grin, moving on to the next thing that captured his attention.
Taking in account all the time they spent sailing and adventuring together before Bartholomew Kuma had sent them all flying in different directions, it was clear that Luffy was a little bit different from the usual pirate. There were many people throughout their adventures who had taken interest in Luffy or had a certain kind of charm that the captain was seemingly immune to. He just didn't seem to have an interest in anyone. Everyone became his family and that was it. While that side of Luffy continued to baffle the rest of the Straw Hats, it wasn't something they really dwelled on, and by now had gotten used to his antics. So it really didn't occur to them to warn Law about it when he accepted the invitation of a joint feast.
Everyone had gathered around in the grassy courtyard on the deck of the Thousand Sunny, laughing and chatting about past adventures. Sanji was moving in and out with plates of food that he'd set down on a nearby table for people to help themselves buffet style. It was a joyful celebration. Law had set his sword and hat to the side, his hair feeling a little bit gross every time he fought in his hat.
The celebration had lasted hours already, and seemed to continue on with the just the Straw Hats and Law, as everyone else had gone to bed. Law had tried to go to bed himself, but they had insisted that he keep drinking with them. At first, Law didn't really think much of it. The first half of the night had just been normal rowdy drinking and tossing arms across shoulders while singing shanties. It started with Luffy laughing at something Nami said and kissing the top of her head while getting up for more beer. Since their partnership had started while on the island of Punk Hazard, Law had been weirded out by the way Luffy and his crew interacted and conducted themselves. So Luffy being drunk and kissing his friends with affection, well, he'd seen weirder in the North Blue. He just didn't think about it possibly happening to him.
Rather than returning to his seat beside Nami, Luffy made his way around the circle, doing his usual giggly display and moved to sit beside Law. He draped his arm over the other captain's shoulders with the intention of thanking the fellow pirate for the copious amount of meat. Instead, the moment Law felt Luffy's arm settle against him, he turned to see what the younger man wanted and was caught off guard by Luffy's mouth against his. They were a little chapped from the salty wind, and he tasted like beer.
As suddenly as he was there, Luffy pulled himself back, completely removing his arm from around Law's shoulders and falling backwards onto his butt. The younger captain had a look of surprise on his face, which was flushed a berry red. Luffy had caught himself with one hand, while the other had flown up to his lips as if he couldn't believe he had just done that.
Law looked equally as surprised, and equally red. He was frozen in place, his eyes wide as canon balls. Neither of them said a word, nor did those around them. the others were unfazed, but were giving the two of them a look from Luffy's reaction.
"Why does everyone look like they're trying to decipher the same map?" Sanji asked, coming from the kitchen with fresh plates of food. Usopp, who unlike the others had seen what happened between Luffy and Law, filled Sanji in. The cook was quiet for a second before his eyes bugged out of their sockets and his cigarette fell out of his mouth. "YOU MEAN LUFFY MADE OUT WITH THAT MANIAC SURGEON???"
Silence followed Sanji's shriek as his words sank in. Then the ship erupted with overlapping questions about what it had meant. Everyone continued to externally process the apparent world changing information that Luffy had accidentally kissed Law.
Luffy adjusted the way he was sitting and rubbed the back of his head awkwardly, his cheeks still aflame. "Huh so that happened." Then he frowned, his hand going from rubbing to scratching. "You know, I don't think I've ever kissed anyone before. Does it usually make you feel settled? I kinda want to do that more"
Once again, the Thousand Sunny fell silent, this time with absolute shock. Robin blinked with surprise; Franky and Chopper's mouths had fallen open; Nami's eyes had gone wide; and Sanji had clamped a hand across his mouth. Zoro squinted his eye and crossed his arms, probably trying to do the math.
"Does that mean you want to do that with all of us?" Nami blurted, breaking the silence. Luffy crossed his arms over his chest and looked up towards the sky, contemplating the answer.
"Naw just with Traffy, I think." Luffy finally said, standing up. After a moment he added "Sanji! More meat! Ha ha," with a silly grin on his face.
Law, to his credit, still hadn't said a word, or even made a noise since Luffy had touched him. He was still trying to comprehend what had happened. Luffy noticed and crouched in front of him, waving a hand in the other man's face.
"Chopper he't not moving." Luffy called out, getting back to his feet and walking away from the stunned doctor. Chopper scrambled over and put his front hooves up, trying to asses what Law might need.
"I think I've had enough." Law finally said. He stood, wrapping a hand around his sword and tossing his hat back on his head.
"G'night Traffy!" He heard Luffy cheer through a mouthful of food. Law couldn't even turn around. He just threw his hand up in some form of acknowledgment and went to keep processing his life choices.
