Work Text:

Veronica was lying next to James, or as dubbed by Mr New Vegas ‘Courier Six,’ wide awake; they had just wiped out Benny for what he did to James and now were setting up camp there in Benny's own room tonight. Veronica wasn't really sure what brought her to the courier, maybe it was his classic charm, maybe it was that she needed a change in scenery, or most accurately that she needed a distraction and James was a good opportunity to find said distractions. And distractions she did find from running errands for the NCR to killing Legionnaires, watching him flirt with every damn man he saw, despite the risks of being a out man in the wasteland, even managing to get a follower to travel with them from it; but most of all was tracking down Benny, the man who shot him twice in the head. The one who made him forget his life, forget his family, given him these terrible migraines, and having to rebuild his life from scratch. But they had finally done it, tracked him across the Mojave until they had a stand off with him in the tops, specifically Benny's presidential suite; ‘the fight itself was rather anticlimactic but seemed almost cathartic to him’ Veronica thought.

That night the courier lay wrestling in their shared bed; looking troubled like he was having a nightmare; presumably about Benny. ‘The poor thing’ Veronica caught herself thinking along those lines. James began moving more, becoming erratic in his sleep and almost panicked; she could empathize with him, she faced her own nightmares too, sometimes about her late parents, others about Father Elijah but most commonly Christine. Oh how she missed Christine, missed how she felt against her, missed her insightful quips, but most of all how she was the only one to comfort Veronica. ‘This isn't important now’ she thought to herself she didn't need to think about how much she missed her lover, ‘How much I loved - no love her' she caught herself thinking yet again.

So she decided to distract herself with James and his nightmare, luckily for her James had rolled into her arms like a scared child still fast asleep. Veronica took advantage of this and held him close. That was when he finally woke up. “Benny?” Veronica asked, lacking her usual sarcasm, James simply nodded, his head nuzzled into Veronica's chest. Veronica pulled him up against her closer as if she held him tight enough it would cause her own thoughts and memories to leave. “He sucked didn't he, but look he can't hurt you anymore;” she said comfortingly or at least her best attempt at it. A beat of silence passes “We made sure of that; feel bad for the cleaners though” she added with some of her usual playfulness returning. “Damn right we did” James responds proudly “And don't worry I'll tip the cleaners extra.” he added with a weak smile

And so the two lay there Veronica's arms wrapped around him, her scribe robes slightly damp with his tears. They stayed like this as James' breathing slowed and he drifted off then so did Veronica.

Could this finally be peace for them both?

Notes:

This is my first fic, please be nice. Any constructive criticism and support is welcome and encouraged.

I haven't really seen that many people cover the Courier's and Veronica's relationship like this so I thought I'd try

Thank you so much for reading!
