When Shane got a call from his agent telling him social media was going crazy over some leaked messages to his girlfriend, Shane’s first thought was thank fuck, which was probably the wrong reaction in retrospect.
The thing was, as bad as the internet melting down over his alleged mistreatment of his fake girlfriend was, it could have been so much worse. The type of texts he and Rozanov usually sent each other… yeah, thank fuck the ones that had leaked were relatively non-sexual (as non-sexual as Rozanov ever really got, anyway) and gender neutral enough not to reveal Lily was, in fact, a man. A hockey player, at that. His biggest rival and probably the most notorious player in the whole league, to be completely accurate.
Fuck. Things could have been so, so much worse. He was actually pretty relieved by it all.
But Shane had been so caught up in the relief of not having his relationship with Rozanov publicly revealed that for a brief moment he forgot sexism was a thing. A thing most of the internet now believed he enjoyed doing to his girlfriend. Which was not great.
Also not great was the sound of his phone ringing because he could see it was his mom. She, he knew, would not be relieved. She would be pretty fucking displeased, actually, and Shane was not sure how to explain any of this in a way that would make sense to her.
He had been trying to figure out a plausible explanation before the phone rang, and had not managed to come up with much. Shane’s only options, as far as he could see, were to either let his mother believe he was the type of douchebag misogynistic guy that told his girlfriend to go fuck herself, left her alone in his apartment for hours while he went out with his friends, and convinced her she didn’t have the right ‘body type’ to wear lingerie (whatever that even meant for women)…. or to tell her he was - well, not gay - but that he had actually been messaging Ilya Rozanov. Because he was involved in a sexual relationship with Ilya Rozanov, the very male captain of the Boston Bears, and had been since their rookie year.
Both options kind of made Shane want to die.
He considered briefly whether there was some sort of third choice available. Could he maybe attempt to fake some sort of anaphylactic reaction over the phone? Surely if his mom thought he was actively dying he’d be able to avoid this conversation altogether.
His mom knew he didn’t have any allergies though. And Shane wasn’t sure how convincing his acting skills would actually be if put to the test. The thought of being caught faking a near death experience to escape his mom’s wrath was more horrifying than just knuckling down and getting it over with. He had represented his country internationally. He had captained his team to the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time in twelve years. He fully intended to win the Cup this year. He could face his mother.
Holding onto that thought, he picked up his phone.

“You told her to, and I quote, go fuck yourself,” Yuna said, scarily calm. “If there’s an acceptable context to say that to your girlfriend, by all means go ahead and explain it to me.”
The actual context was that Rozanov had just finished describing an elaborate fantasy of how the game they had been playing against Boston that afternoon would play out, with highlights including Rozanov scoring a hattrick, Montreal being humiliated, and Shane being so overcome with lust at the display of Rozanov’s hockey prowess he had dropped to his knees and started blowing Rozanov right there on centre ice.
Not for the first time, Shane felt weak with relief that the leaked messages had cut off where they had. If those texts had been made public… Fuck, he couldn’t even think about it. They had been so, so lucky.
Not that he actually felt all that lucky in that precise moment, scrambling to come up with an answer that would satisfy his mom. Obviously telling her the truth wasn’t an option, so that left… not much really. He wasn’t much of an expert on girls, to be honest. He’d had one girlfriend, briefly, in high school, but they’d broken up not long after he was drafted, and he hadn’t really dated much afterwards. The closest thing he had to a girlfriend now was probably Rozanov, which was sort of humiliating and awful to think about, considering he and Rozanov weren’t even actually in a relationship at all, and Rozanov was a man, so he very much was not anything like a girlfriend at all, actually.
Fuck, he really didn’t have a good answer for his mom.
“She’s not actually my girlfriend,” he tried. He couldn’t see her face, but from the sharp intake of air he heard through the phone, he guessed that had been a bad answer. Fuck.
“I mean - she doesn’t care, she doesn’t take things like that seriously. She says worse things to me all the time,” he said, backpedaling frantically.
“Even if she doesn’t care,” Yuna said icily, “there are still some things you should never say to any woman, but especially not to someone you care about. Not to someone who cares about you.”
Shane bit his tongue. He didn’t care about Rozanov and Rozanov definitely didn’t care about him, but there was no point even trying to explain anything like that to his mom.
“I mean really, Shane, telling her she doesn’t have the body type to pull off lingerie? What on earth made you say that?”
Shane wanted to die. He officially wanted to die. A slow, miserable, painful death would be a relief at this point. Rozanov had been fucking with him - he obviously wasn’t actually going to show up in sexy lingerie - but, yes, out of context, he could see how that particular message looked bad.
“Yeah,” he said weakly. “I probably shouldn’t have said that. I was just joking around but maybe it didn’t come across the way I meant it.”
“No, I don’t think it did.” His mom sounded pissed and Shane winced silently. He couldn’t blame her for her reaction - if he had actually sent those messages to a girl she would have been completely justified in pulling him up on it - but all he could think about was Rozanov’s irritating fucking face and his laugh. He’d probably find this whole situation absolutely fucking hilarious.
That was not a helpful mental image. Banishing all thoughts of Rozanov from his mind, Shane forced himself to pay attention to his mom, which was its own kind of mental torture. The word lingerie was being used way too much for a conversation in which the only participants were him and his mother.
Maybe he had died already and this was hell, being forced to listen to his mother repeating the word lingerie as she lectured him about treating his girlfriend with respect. His girlfriend, who was actually Ilya Rozanov. For a brief, hysterical moment he imagined just telling her, just putting the truth out there and seeing what happened next.
He didn’t. Obviously. No matter how bad this was, if anyone actually found out the truth, everything would be so much worse.
“I’m sorry,” he said instead. “Really sorry. I know this must be - disappointing for you. I’ll apologise to Lily too. I really didn’t mean any of it in a bad way but - yeah, I’ll apologise to her.”
“I think that would be a good idea,” his mom said stiffly, and then she sighed a little. “I know what locker rooms can be like. The culture there… I can see how you could get caught up in it all. But just try to remember how you were brought up, okay? I love you so much, and I’m so proud of you. I want to be able to keep saying that, you know?”
“I know.” Shane swallowed around the lump in his throat. His mom was proud of him, he knew that. He just wasn’t sure if she still would be if she actually knew the truth about him and what he had been doing.
“Okay. Love you sweetie.”
“Love you too, Mom.”
“Hey, maybe one day you could introduce us to Lily!”
Shane’s mind went blank in sheer horror. That was absolutely never going to happen. “Haha. Yeah, sure, maybe one day. Okay, I have to go, talk later, bye!”
At least the call with his mom hadn’t been completely awful. He didn’t really want to find out what people were saying online, but figured he should probably give it at least a quick look over. Surely it couldn’t be too bad…

As much as he hated to admit it, Shane did feel a little better after messaging Rozanov. Rozanov wasn’t wrong; the NHL was rife with scandals. It was only a matter of time before some dickhead cheated on his wife in a cheap bar in Vegas or totaled his car while high out of his mind, and the internet moved on to the next drama.
This wasn’t even nearly the worst scandal to erupt about a player’s behaviour towards his girlfriend, which did not say great things about NHL players' treatment of women, but selfishly gave Shane a little breathing room.
This whole thing would blow over, and everything would be fine. Things would go back to normal. Maybe he should take it as a sign to cool things off with Rozanov a little bit, though. They had been lucky this time, but they might not get as lucky if it happened again.
The thing between them was casual. It was quick, convenient. It didn’t mean anything, and it definitely wasn’t worth losing his career over.
The weird feeling of loss he definitely wasn’t feeling at the thought of giving up whatever it was they had was proof enough it was past time to end things. Shane should have called it off years ago, or even better, he should never have let this weird thing between them get started in the first place.
His phone buzzed with another message from Rozanov which he ignored because there wasn’t anything more than a purely physical attraction between them and he definitely didn’t care about what he had to say in the slightest. Next time, he thought. He would end their arrangement for good the next time he went to see Rozanov.
Or he could just stop texting him in public. Maybe that would be a workable compromise until things fizzled out between them.
February 2022
Shane missed his husband way more than he probably should. They almost never really spent time apart - they lived together, worked together, slept together - which should have made being away from Ilya for a single evening easy to manage, but somehow it really didn’t. If anything, it actually seemed to make it worse. He didn’t know how the hell the two of them had managed to survive all those years of long distance when now he could barely stomach two hours spent away from his husband.
He sighed and took another sip from his drink. Shane hadn’t really even wanted to go out, but Hayden and JJ were in town after a game, and it had seemed rude to decline when they’d proposed heading out together afterwards for old times sake. It wasn’t that he didn’t like them, or enjoy their company - he just liked Ilya more, and trying to arrange anything with all four of them together had proven to be more trouble than it was worth on multiple occasions. For Shane’s sake, the other three would do their best to keep a lid on the tension that still simmered between them, but there was still an edge to their interactions with each other that drove Shane crazy. He didn’t like having to play the peacemaker between them.
Because Ilya was perfect and the love of his life, Ilya was more than aware of this, and had told Shane to go meet up with his friends without him. It had felt like a good idea at the time, but now that Shane was actually here at the bar with Hayden and JJ without Ilya, he was less convinced. Hayden was ordering another round at the bar, and JJ was off talking to some girl at another table, and Shane… missed his husband.
He felt his phone buzz against his leg, and smiled, opening Ilya’s text. The best thing about being embarrassingly in love with his husband was that Ily was just as embarrassingly in love with him. He messaged with Ilya for a minute, then put his phone down with a sigh. One more hour, he thought. He’d hang out with Hayden and JJ for one more hour, and then he’d do what he’d really wanted to do since the game ended - throw himself into Ilya’s arms and spend the rest of the night wrapped around his husband.
