身体对性欲和恐惧产生的生理反应非常类似，例如心跳加快、呼吸急促、肾上腺素分泌、血压升高……大脑有时难以精确区分这些生理反应的来源。如果在看鬼片的时候身边有一个有吸引力的伴侣，并且情境里具有亲密或浪漫的暗示，大脑就可能产生误判，将这种由恐惧引起的心跳加速，错误地归因于“被伴侣吸引”或“性兴奋”。这会放大当时的性欲和感受，让人感觉“更有感觉”。
