Chapter Text
Spot found himself looking at the starry sky, it was beautiful all the way out here, away from street lamps, that made the stars seem brighter. He couldn't deny that the hike had been worth it, long as it had been.
Up in the sky, there was one shooting star, and it caught his eye. It was nothing special in itself, but another soon followed, and then they were both gone. It made his heart ache a little, when he thought of what he had lost.
Six months earlier.
Race was driving, singing along to some song he had turned on, loud, but happy, and it made Spot laugh, the kind of laugh that only Race could earn from him. He had to remind himself that Race had a boyfriend, who had backed out of coming along for whatever reason. It was probably nothing, and Race didn't really seem worried, smiling as if nothing in the world bothered him. God, that smile. That fucking smile, that reached his eyes and made them bright, sparkling, full of life. The setting sun reflected in his hair, making it look close enough to gold. "You sick of drivin' yet?" Spot asked, Race shook his head. "Nope." He popped some gum into his mouth, one hand on the wheel, eyes fixed on the road, smile on his face, Spot smiling with him. Race was easy like that. Easy to laugh with, easy to like.
They had been friends for years, but never more, despite Spot wanting to. Yearning, in fact, but he never asked. Didn't want to ruin it. Didn't want to ask if maybe they could be more. But the feelings did exist, keeping him up at night sometimes. He wanted it so badly it hurt.
If he was being honest, he wasn't entirely upset about Albert not coming with them. It meant he got to have Race all to himself.
