Chapter Text
The first thing people notice about the Jedi Council room is that it’s smaller than it looks. The pinnacle of the Temple was only about 25 feet in diameter, with a few chairs to form the semi-circle of the Jedi Council. Most think that such a small room would make you feel larger than life.
It only made you feel miniscule.
“Your assignment,” Master Windu started, “is to further promote the Jedi Order and the Galactic Senate on the Outer Rim planet of Rimbor.”
A mission, some time ago, similar in parameters. Rimbor’s religious continent, Kiastreth, was lush and green, unlike the rest of the planet. Temples and churches as far as the eye could see littered the land. You remember the planet’s twin moons on the horizon that fateful night, gleaming with matching cheshire smiles. They mocked you in your dreams. On Earth, those graves are empty, the bodies of two Padawans and a Jedi Knight still wasting away in a temple somewhere on that lush land with its creeping moons.
“You will be accompanied by Senator Richard Grayson-Wayne in your task, who will work on politics and negotiations. Despite being a new addition to the courtroom, Senator Grayson-Wayne is a valuable asset to the Republic and will be crucial to your success.”
You drift back to that fateful mission, six years ago but still at the forefront of your mind. The two Padawans were given a merciful death, a lightsaber through the heart. The weapon glowed the same crimson color as their blood. The Jedi Knight with you that night was strong. Her lightsaber glowed blue in icy defiance against the assassins sent to destroy you. Well, not you. Still, she fell to the assassins, and you were captured. They would never kill you, if only for your last name.
“Do you understand, Knight Skywalker?”
You willed your voice to work. “Yes, Master Windu.”
He smiled at you. “If no one has anything else, then this meeting is dismissed. May the Force be with you.”
You spun and walked out of the room. Isn’t it always.
Halfway down the hallway, Mace—no longer Master Windu outside of the Council Room—catches up with you. Much to the chagrin of your father, Mace quickly became one of your favorite uncles on the Jedi Council, often volunteering to watch you if Anakin, Padme, and Obi-Wan were busy in those first couple of years where it was just you. It also helped that your lightsabers were matching colors, yours only being a bit darker.
Mace called your name, bringing you back to reality from your fantasy life. His face was more worn than it has been in the past couple of years, the crow feet and fine lines more noticeable every day your father was missing. The goal of most of your missions thus far into your journey as a Jedi Knight were to retrieve your father: Anakin Skywalker. Mission X, as just described in the council room, was one of two missions you had gone on with their main objective not related to your father in some way.
Mace skipped the pomp and circumstance of telling you he was sorry about the mission; you already knew, anyway. Confidential information and all that.
“As for what I was going to say before you booked it out of the council room with the force of a thousand suns, was that you’ll have time on the mission to look for him while you’re there,” he said, slightly winded at the brisk pace you set down the hallway.
“What, so it can end in tragedy for the, what is it, fifth time in the past three months?” you shot back.
The words felt heavy on your tongue, sticky with grief and exhaustion. The search for the ever-great Anakin Skywalker had been taken up and failed by many, including his own daughter. Since his disappearance shortly after the birth of the twins and the death of your mother, the Jedi Master had been searched for in what seemed like the rest of the galaxy for the past two decades.
“Uncle Mace,” you started. “I can’t keep doing this. This endless pit of uncertainty is going to eat me alive.”
When Mace put his hand on your shoulder and opened his mouth, pausing in the middle of the hallway, what you expected next was a long-since rehearsed routine for the both of you. Instead, two younger voices echoed off the hallway walls, both playful with youth and weighted with command.
“Luke, Leia, what are you doing here?” you said, confusion muddling your brows together.
“A “hello” would have been nice, ya know. Especially considering we are your favorite siblings,” Luke replied, hands on his hips.
You rolled your eyes in the way only older sisters know how to do, slightly exasperated but mostly fond. “Hello, mischievous scoundrels, why are you in my building and not at the Senate with Obi-Wan?”
“Because we felt like it, loser,” Leia said, providing zero context and dropping the posh-Senator vibe the second she was out of the Senate Building.
“Whatever. If you make C3PO short circuit again, you two are fixing him,” you remarked, leaning against the wall and crossing one leg over the other.
The two twins sputtered their dispute, “But you’re the only one who knows how to read Dad’s chicken scratch handwriting on the repair book!”
“Sometimes I wonder if you two can read at all—”
“Speaking of Dad,” Leia interrupted. “Is that what your meeting was about?”
You pursed your lips. Why did they have to be Senators? “Not exactly.”
In an action that would have been laughable any other time, the two of them gave you the same dubious raised eyebrow, as if saying and that’s all?
“I’m leaving for Rimbor later tonight, but that’s all I can tell you. I’m sorry.”
“Rimbor?” Luke protested. “Why would they send you, of all people, back to that hell?”
“I won’t be on Kiastreth this time. Besides, I have a senator going with me,” you said, putting a hand on Luke’s shoulder. For as much as your brother could calmly deflect anything thrown his way in the Senate, threats to family would always dig deeper than he wanted to admit.
Leia gave you a suspicious look. “Which senator?”
“Grayson-Wayne, I think? I was kind of spacing off in the council room,” you explained, a stray hand coming up to rub at the scar on your neck hidden under a halterneck. “Enough about that, though. Let’s get you back to the Senate Building before Obi-Wan storms in here to chop off my head himself.”
As you led your siblings down the hallway and towards the zeta tubes, Mace was gone.
⭑/\☆/\⭑
On one of his rare visits to the Jedi Temple, Dick Grayson encounters a variety of surprising things.
The first of which is a surprise jumpscare from his two Jedi siblings, Cass and Duke. Both Jedi Knights, wicked with a lightsaber, and some of the craziest people he’s ever met.
The second is a case file dumped on him by Bruce the second he zetas into the building, something about teaming up with Jedi and going to the Outer Rim.
The third, and possibly most crazy, is that the Jedi he’s teaming up with is you, the person he’s watching train in the public arena. Aka the last Skywalker Jedi.
As soon as Dick is in the Jedi Temple proper and away from Bruce, case file in hand, Cass and Duke drag him away to the Dome. The Dome is the biggest public Jedi training facility in the Jedi Temple where people within the Temple can come watch. It’s usually used when it’s transformed for the yearly Jedi Duels, but today only one person is in there: you.
Glass walls surround the upper part of the Dome where the audience stands or sits as they peer below to where the Jedi train. The training simulation around you was mesmerizing to watch, especially compared to the dull Senate chambers Dick usually spent his time in. Blaster fire rained down upon you from floating droids, robots sprung from the ground with training sabers, and the terrain kept shifting under your feet. You sliced down robots with your saber with excellent technique while making droids fall from the air.
The Force
On the glass screen in front of him, careful not to let the hologram screen block his view of the fighting down below, Dick pulled up your profile from the Temple’s public record system. It stated the basics, like your name, Jedi rank, lightsaber color, birthday, and parentage if approved. Your first name was beautiful, and flowed right into the prestigious Skywalker that followed. Your lightsaber color, viewable from where Dick was standing and also listed on the screen, was a dark purple, a stark contrast to the usual green and blue that frequented the Temple. A headshot was on the left side of the profile, where your face looked carefully neutral. The little bit of your shirt that was able to be seen came up and covered your neck completely.
Jedi Knight Skywalker is the first daughter of Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala. Dick read. She is a strong Force user due to her lineage, but wields her purple lightsaber with precise technique. As a Padawan, she trained under Master Skywalker, her father, for a time before he disappeared. Master Kenobi took her as a Padawan in the years that followed. She has served the Republic as a Jedi Knight for one year, and has gone on many diplomatic missions to further the light of the Republic [see the MISSIONS tab for more information].
Her father, Anakin Skywalker, was an awarded and accomplished Jedi Master credited with the defeat of Darth Sidious, or former Emperor Palpatine. Her mother, Padme Amidala, was a brilliant Senator who helped Master Skywalker in his defeat due to her unmatched investigative and persuasive skills in the Senate. Her siblings, Luke and Leia, are currently Senators in training.
Dick glanced through the missions tab, but only one caught his attention.
Mission Resh-Krill was an unfortunate accident that resulted in three deaths and a major injury. In 2019, then-Padawan Skywalker, two other Jedi Padawans, and a decorated Jedi Knight were on the hunt for a group of thieves on the continent Kiastreth of Rimbor. Instead, the group of four encountered [REDACTED], where the two Jedi Padawans and the Jedi Knight were killed in action. Young Skywalker was the only survivor with a grievous injury to her throat.
While most missions on your file gave a more generous description, this was the shortest by far. Not many details were given other than time and location—the same planet he was accompanying you to later tonight. Thankfully, their mission was on a different continent.
“And she does it!” Duke exclaimed from Dick’s left, breaking him away from the screen and towards the arena with you in the center, lightsaber still extended from your last attack. “Jedi Knight Skywalker has just defeated one of the hardest training simulations the Temple has to offer.”
Cheers and well-deserved applause ring out from above the Dome, causing you to startle a bit. The air conditioner and fans used in the arena ruffle your baggier pants, and a silver star zipper glints under the harsh lights on the back of your crop top, of course covering your neck. Dick watches as your lightsaber is safely tucked away on your belt as you give a slight head nod and a signed “thank you” to the audience before you leave through the floor exit, combat boots somehow not making much sound at all.
“Cass, did you ever see her in your sign language class?” Dick asked, eyes still on the arena and where you made your exit before he pulled away to watch what his sister signed back.
“Only sometimes. She picked it up quickly though,” she responded with a shrug.
Dick and his siblings wander away from the Dome towards an alcove by the wall, where they all squish against the window. Outside, at midday, the traffic around the Jedi Temple is zipping. The surrounding city below is bursting with life, from the vibrant colors of tents set up at the weekend market in the summer to the variety of houses that can be seen, even from atop the Dome. Nothing will compare to the Senate Building out East, but the West certainly has its charms.
“So, Dick, you said you were going on a mission before we dragged you off to the Dome. Anything you care to share with the class?” Duke prodded, tossing his lightsaber handle between his two hands.
“Most of it is confidential, unfortunately. I’ll be flying off to Rimbor tonight, coincidentally with Knight Skywalker.”
Duke stopped tossing his lightsaber, eyes wide as plates. “No fucking way. You get to go on a mission with the greatest Jedi of our generation?”
Cass swatted Duke on the chest. “Language. You’re in uniform.”
“Anyway,” Duke said with a roll of his eyes. “You said you were going to Rimbor?”
Dick nodded and pulled his knees up to his chest from where he was sitting on the wide windowsill. Not very becoming of a Senator, nonetheless the oldest and heir to Bruce Wayne.
His mind wandered back to you, a girl forced to go back to where she watched three of her friends die. How you fought with such ferocity, even if just for a training session. Your lightsaber technique was perfect, each strike clean with a little bit of that Skywalker flair Dick has seen in videos when he studied the Clone Wars. Your Force reach was on another level, far greater than most Jedi. You were only around your father for three years, and yet the similarities were striking. From the cunning prowess you excelled at on the field to your all-black Jedi attire, you were a Skywalker through and through.
Risking a glance up from the window, Dick spotted a glaring purple cape bounding down the hallways towards their little group.
“Wow, you guys look depressing over here,” Steph said with a flick of her hair over her shoulder, blonde curls bouncing but still slightly dull from her last mission.
The Jedi Informant’s chin immediately found a perch on the top of Cass’s head, the two giving each other a quick peck on the lips before settling against each other.
“Big Blue! I don’t see you ‘round these parts often! What brings the Golden Boy over to the ye old Jedi Temple?” Steph asked, eyes focused on Dick.
Before Dick could answer for himself, however, Duke spoke, “it’s nothing, other than getting to go on a mission with Knight Skywalker herself.”
In opposition to Duke’s awestruck reaction, Steph barely reacted. “I’ve had to deliver news to her a couple times. Gotta say, Dick, she’s not one for waxing poetics in the courtroom. Miss Purple Lightsaber—totally stealing my brand, by the way—is more of a slice now, ask questions later sort of gal.”
Dick rolled his eyes with a nod towards the Dome behind them. “I’ve gathered that.”
Cass’s hands patted her girlfriend’s lightly as the group stood. “Training in fifteen minutes. We’ve gotta run. See you tonight?” she signed with a questioning glance.
“Yeah, Cassie, I’ll see you guys tonight before I leave. Do you know of any other siblings I should be on the look out for while I’m here today?” Dick responded.
Steph smirked. “None that we’re going to tell you about!”
Dick shook his head in exasperation, treading backwards down the hallway with a wave as he went towards the library. The walls of the Temple were mostly practical, but some had decoration in the form of decorative tile or murals. In the hallway leading away from the Dome and down towards the library—one of the most protected places in the Temple—had a Clone Wars mural up.
The scene depicted was listed below, but from what Dick could make out on the wall, it was a group of Jedi, most notably Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Asoka Tano, fighting with troops at their backs’ towards Palpatine’s forces. Above them, the sun and moon met in an eclipse. The sun’s rays beat down on the enemy forces, while the dim light of the moon seemed to make the battlefield in front of the three Jedi darker.
From what Dick remembers about the Clone Wars, it was a time of grief and struggle for everyone in the galaxy, not just the Republic. Some days, especially noted in published journals from other members of the war, it was hard to tell left from right, up from down, and good from bad. Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Asoka, among other notable members of the Jedi and Jedi Council, were fierce fighters in the war and were there for all three years of the brutal conflict.
If Dick’s math is correct, which it often isn’t, you must’ve been born before the Clone Wars took place. (Especially if Dick looked at the next wall over, which was a painted portrait of the famous, public Skywalker-Amidala wedding with you as the flowergirl before Padme gave birth to your siblings).
What an absolute mindfuck.
Continuing on his walk over to the library, Dick continued to run into murals and tiles on walls depicting multiple famous battle scenes, war memorials, or even one for the current members of the Jedi Council. A number of Jedi slipping in and out of rooms passed him and said hello, or even asked a couple questions about where the trio of his Jedi and Jedi-adjacent siblings were before he reached the metallic stairs leading down into the data archives.
The air became slightly stuffier and cooler to accommodate the multiple computers and data slips that encompassed the Jedi Data Archives deep in the Temple. The walls, once made of stone and tile, melted into a dark steel, cool to the touch.
“Dick Grayson in a library, who would’ve thought?”
Dick spins on his heels where his eyes find Babs sitting down behind the main desk, holographic screens alight with information.
“Listen, I know the whole reading for fun schtick is Jay’s thing, but it is an important part of my job,” Dick joked, pulling up a rolling chair scattered about the floor and sitting backwards.
Dick and Babs had been friends since they were ten, ever since Barbara’s dad was the one to work on the case to bring Dick’s parent’s murderer to justice. Babs was there when he fell too deep into grief, and Dick responded in kind by sticking around with Babs once the case was finished. Since that fateful, rainy night, the two had gone through some shit together.
“What new dirty work is Bruce making you do now, other than the horrors of reading?” Barbara asked with a playful smirk.
Dick winced. “Actually, this one isn’t Bruce. I’m headed to Rimbor for a couple of weeks with a Jedi. Something about diplomacy? To be honest, I skimmed it.”
“Rimbor, huh?” Babs shook her head with a scowl. “Nasty place. Which Jedi, if you don’t mind me asking?”
“Knight Skywalker.”
The words sat in the open air for a while, the weight of them reverberating around the space.
“And she agreed to go back to that horrid planet?” Babs’ words were littered with disbelief.
“I’m starting to think that it wasn’t voluntary. From the way she was training today, I wouldn’t want that on my worst enemies in the Senate.”
“And she was training—publically? Oh, we are so fucked.”
Babs almost sounded like she knew you, which was weird compared to what Dick has been hearing all day today. The girl nobody knows.
“So, any info you can give me about, well, anything? I’ve got a fairly long trip ahead of me,” Dick requested.
With a determined look, Babs got to work researching where pieces of data and information cards could be found in the library around them. The occasional question came up, like where are you going, specifically? Anyone you know you’re meeting? Any celebrations at that time you were made aware of? The normal, boring, acts of diplomacy.
Right as the list was being finished, Dick asked one more question, “this may be none of my business, and you’ve already done a lot for me, but do you know anything about Mission Resh-Krill?”
The drumming of Babs’ fingers on the desk stopped, along with the flicking of her pen. “Why would you want to know about the mission that killed three well-taught Jedi and chronically injured another?”
“Maybe because I’m going on another mission, back to the same planet, with that lone survivor?” Dick tried, then let his face fall into a flat look. “I’m curious. I can’t find anything about it anywhere.”
“It’s that way for a reason, Golden Boy. Skywalker, including the whole Jedi Council in a unanimous vote, didn’t want any prying eyes in her business. Nobody barely even saw the girl until years after her mission and recovery time,” Babs said with a sigh.
Dick started to stand and put the chair away.
“But—”
He spun on his heels.
“I can give you the location of the data we might have on it. It will be heavily redacted due to your status, but you might find something useful. Don’t tell anyone I gave this to you, or you will be kissing your job at the Senate good-bye”
Dick bobbed his head up and down quickly under the force of Babs’ glare. Barbara Gordon was many things, but failing to complete a threat was not one of them.
He grabbed the list with a flourish and a smile. “Thanks, Babs! I owe you one!”
“You owe me many more than one, Dick Grayson.”
Dick found his way through the library slowly, starting at the front. Even after multiple years of visiting Babs and walking through the Jedi Library, he could never remember where anything was found if all the shelves looked the same.
The first part of the list read RIMBOR, with designations for two continents under it with the names of KIASTRETH and EZ’AI.
RIMBOR
Rimbor is an average sized world with two moons, Obsidix and Pytheraea. Rimbor is known for its obsidian mining from the two mountains at the top and bottom of the planet, North and South Wickbriand respectively. There are three continents; Ez’ai, which holds the capital; Kiastreth, the world leader in religion; Phaduin for agriculture. The climate is humid all year round due to the thick clouds keeping moisture trapped in the air. Multiple water drills are in place to keep up with the demands of Rimbor’s surprisingly large population.
Rimbor’s main export is obsidian stone, along with illegal drugs. Both of these resources are sold and traded across the Milky Way in many underground space markets. Much of the obsidian is used for jewelry and machinery.
Rimbor’s government is run by the High Court of Rimbor, whose trials have resulted in mixed reviews before. Usually, the winner of the trial is the person with the highest bribe.
KIASTRETH
Kiastreth is Rimbor’s continent dedicated to religion. There are many temples built throughout the land, as well as churches and religious schools. Due to their religious views, Kiastreth has waged many religious wars in the past with others who have tried to settle different religions on the planet.
Coincidentally, Kiastreth is also home to many of the riots and “enlightenments” of Rimbor. Many have tried to invade the continent, burn religious structures, and stage coups for the main religious leaders.
EZ’AI
Ez’ai is the main continent of Rimbor, which houses five different countries, nine water drills, and the capital city. The capital, Phirith, houses the High Court of Rimbor. Water drills are Rimbor’s only source of natural water, found by digging deep under the surface to a layer of ice below.
Ez’ai is the most common for tourists. There are many bars in the entertainment districts around the capital, along with clubs, hotels, and many of the permanent residents of the planet. It is also the most accessible way to get to the peaks of the planet, North and South Wickbriand. The once-volcanoes are now frozen over, leaving large obsidian deposits buried underneath the land. North Wickbriand holds most of the cooler toned obsidian, while South Wickbriand holds most of the warmer toned obsidian.
Dick downloaded the information onto his tablet, confident it would be useful in the future. Next, his search led him to the Library’s People category. Way to be subtle, Babs. Marked on the list were both you and your father.
ANAKIN SKYWALKER
Anakin Skywalker is one of the most brilliant Jedi of his generation. Born on the desert planet of Tatooine until he was taken to train with the Jedi on Earth, Anakin demonstrated strong Force abilities from a young age and developed a natural flair for the lightsaber. Master Skywalker wielded a blue lightsaber as a nod to his strong connection to the Light of the Force.
During the Clone Wars, then-Knight Skywalker took in Asoka Tano. He is also mainly credited with the eventual defeat and collapse of the Empire, though when asked he gives much of the credit to his wife, Padme Amidala.
With the New Age of the Jedi after the defeat of Palpatine, Jedi were allowed to marry. Two weeks after the defeat of the Empire, Anakin publicly married Padme, accompanied by their first child, now a Jedi Knight herself.
Currently, Master Skywalker is Missing In Action, last seen on Earth, but many tracking devices place him near the Outer Rim of the Milky Way galaxy.
Under Anakin’s profile was yours, so Dick continued to scroll until he filled his screen with your unofficial biography.
The first-born daughter of Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala is one of the greatest Jedi of her generation, much like her father. She has been a Jedi Knight for the past year, leading multiple expeditions to find Anakin. She wields a purple lightsaber, one attributed to Jedi who balance the Light and Dark side of the Force, unlike the striking blue of her father’s.
She is an older sibling to both Luke and Leia Skywalker, twins that are slowly making their names known in the Galactic Senate. While both Luke and Leia showed strong Force capabilities, they let their older sister handle the lightsaber swinging.
As a teen, she was sent on Mission Resh-Krill, which took her to the planet Rimbor. There she suffered grievous injuries that resulted in [REDACTED]. Despite this, she still trains consistently and remains one of the best Jedi Knights of the Temple.
Dick wasn’t surprised to see most of your personal information about your injuries was redacted from the file. He expected the next and final file to be much of the same text.
MISSION RESH-KRILL
Mission Resh-Krill, denoted as such for the Aurebesh alphabet letters R-K, standing for Rimbor-Kiastreth. Initially put in as a [REDACTED] mission, it quickly went sideways. Consisting of three Padawans and a Jedi Knight, with one of the Padawans being now-Knight Skywalker, three of the four were killed.
The group was [REDACTED]. Skywalker was the only one returned alive, and of which she had survived [REDACTED]. Her injuries included [REDACTED]. The three other members of the mission were too mutilated to survive the trip home. Their memorial graves are empty, located at the South Cemetery on Earth.
⭑/\☆/\⭑
Later that night, Dick got word of his brother being in town. Jason, who probably would have enjoyed his library excursion more than Dick did, was currently running maintenance on the ship he would be taking with you to Rimbor.
“Dick, you weren’t supposed to be in the hangar until later tonight. What happened to trust between brothers?” Jason gave as his opening line.
“Jay, you have two short breaks on holidays while you’re away at University and your summers are spent researching or holed up in the library. If I didn’t see you before the second-most dangerous mission of my life, I think you’d be more concerned,” Dick said in response, getting annoyingly close to where Jason was walking under the ship.
“God, you’re a softy. Just because you’re going to the most inhospitable planet on the Outer Rim doesn’t immediately mean you’re gonna come back home in a body bag.”
Their memorial graves are empty, located at the South Cemetery on Earth.
“Dick?” Jason said with a wave of his hand in front of Dick’s face.
“Sorry, thinking about something. Any recommendations for the bars on Rimbor? Anything I should hit up while I’m there?” Dick said with a laugh.
Jason shot him a weird look, like he knew what was going on in Dick’s head. “Uh, not even your clinically insane brother who literally died for a time would ever willingly set foot on that blasted planet.”
“Ugh, you’re no fun.”
This time, the look Jason shot him was more one of incredulity. “Would you rather I went underage drinking on a planet known for its crime rate, strip clubs, and drug exports?”
“Do I even want to know what you two are talking about?” rang Bruce’s voice from the elevator door.
“Ah, B, your son’s being a fucking idiot again,” Jason deadpanned before heading back under the ship.
“Excuse me! I am a Senator for the Galactic Republic! I—”
Jason shoved his hand over Dick’s mouth with a side eye. “You literally yap for a living.”
Bruce muffled his laughter with his hand, to which Dick shot him a glare. Bruce, to his credit, did try to control his face into something more professional fit for a Senator of many, many years and the face of one of the biggest technology companies in the galaxy. Still, his eyes were crinkled at the corner as his mouth flattened out.
“Jason, remove your hand from Dick’s face. You know he’ll lick it, ship grease or not. Dick, stop being a child, you’re twenty-three years old,” Bruce said.
Jason, very reluctantly, removed his hand from Dick’s mouth and went back to checking the outer hull of the ship. Dick glanced around the now almost empty hangar and outwards toward the sky, littered full of stars.
“Do you have everything you need?” Bruce asked him, also staring out.
“Yeah, I’ve got all of it in the bags by the dock of the ship. I also stopped by the library today for some more info. Babs says hi and her dad wants to set up a time for you guys to meet up again. Something about contract work?” Dick responded.
“Probably. There was a kerfuffle at Wayne Enterprises a couple weeks ago.”
Jason, once again distracted from his task, whipped around and barely missed slamming his head against the belly of the ship. “Bruce, do not tell me you just used kerfuffle in a sentence.”
Bruce shrugged. “Bet they don’t use that one in your University classes.”
“Doesn’t matter since you’re the one paying for my graduate tuition!” Jason said with a cheer. “Besides, people didn’t really use the word kerfuffle until the 1940s, when it gained popularity. You’d fit right in, B.”
Bruce narrowed his eyes at his second son. “Are you calling me old, Jaylad?”
“Now, why would you think that, old man?”
With significantly less drama as your training session, the elevator dinged again, this time revealing you. Dick admired your consistency to stick to the color black, if your outfit and ankle-length cloak had anything to say about it. A droid was rolling next to you, silver with blue accents, beeping excitedly.
“Hush, ‘R2; I’ll only be gone a couple weeks. Your job is the twins and ‘3PO, since it’s almost guaranteed he’ll short circuit at some point,” you spoke softly.
You approached their group with your head held high, the droid—R2—a fair distance behind you. “I take it you’re my mission partner?”
Dick held out a hand to shake. “Dick Grayson-Wayne, a Senator.”
Your grip on his hand was strong and calloused as you introduced yourself, with an added, “but I bet you already knew that,” tacked on to the end.
“And who’s the droid?” Jason asked a bit gruffly.
You raised an eyebrow at Jason, suspicious. “R2D2, my father’s. Why do you ask?”
Jason shrugged. “He looks cool.”
“Thanks.” You turned back around to face Bruce and Dick. “Bruce Wayne, it’s not often we see you around the Temple.”
“It’s a pleasure to be back. I hope the Senate isn’t overstepping in providing you with assistance, Knight Skywalker.”
And the Brucie Wayne voice was on.
You, for the second time that night, raised an eyebrow at the switch up. “What the Jedi Council says goes. I’ll take the help I can get.”
“I’m excellent help, thank you very much,” Dick said, a thick layer of sarcasm on and the façade of the do-good Senator off.
“I’m sure you are. Our take-off time is in thirty minutes and we’ve got a long flight ahead of us. Need help carrying your bags, or just your ego?” you snarked back.
Jason shot him a look—why does everybody keep doing that today?—and laughed silently at the expression on Dick’s face. His jaw was hanging, that’s for sure.
You smirked at him, lips pulling up just at the corner. “What? No witty retort?”
Dick watched as you spun around, cloak spinning around you slightly. The crest of the Jedi Republic shown in glassy vinyl on the back, catching the faint overhead lights. Your bags floated up behind you with the Force, R2D2 watching from a safe distance.
Once everything was settled and Dick managed to pick his jaw up from the floor, you stuck your head out from the side of the ship. “Well, don’t just stand there, Senator Grayson.”
Jason looked him in the eyes as he passed him to stand by Bruce, a silent good luck with that one, hanging in the air.
“That’s Senator Grayson-Wayne, to you Knight Skywalker.”
fin.
