Summary
A dull ache formed in Mallow’s chest at the memory of her mother, guilt and self-hatred built up at what she had said to her. If she could change one thing, it would be how they parted. Even thinking about it made her stomach twist. What kind of selfish child would say such a thing to their sick mother, who did everything to be there even in her dying moments.
‘I hate you’
The words echoed in her mind, louder now as the anniversary approached. Every time she remembered it she felt sick with herself. She tried to be better — supportive, helpful, kind — the way her mother had been. But the phrase haunted her, looping endlessly.
