Levi walks by the sandy beaches of the coast, a flashlight in hand. He had heard rumours of a beast lurking in the ocean’s waters. “That’s ridiculous,” he shakes his head with a sigh as his brothers would tell him tales of the beast dragging fishermen into the water, drowning them as a means to scare him. He decided to prove them wrong, going to hunt for this supposed monster by himself.
The sand beneath him crunches as he walks by the seashore, the feeling of sand between his bare toes making him grimace. Levi had always hated the feeling of sand, how it gets everywhere, how rough it is. Before he could ruminate in his discomfort, he heard a sickly sweet melody. Levi quickly turned his head in the direction of the song, confusion coursing through him.
There the creature was, their body still half submerged in the water. Their scales illuminating under the moonlight, a few locks sticking to their face, an almost predatory grin on their face. Levi knows exactly what they were, they were a siren, the monsters from Greek mythology whose most defining characteristics are anything but civil. Yet, he can’t help his beating heart. Despite being very well in danger right now, he walks closer to the creature, alarm bells ringing in his head. His feet slowly walk towards the siren, seemingly in a trance. Which would be normal if he was actually hypnotised but he knows more than anyone that he’s doing this on his own free will.
The siren smiles smugly. To them, they had captured yet another victim but that was far from it. Levi lets out a breathy sigh, overwhelmed by their beauty. His legs splash through the waves, his mouth agape. However, before the beast could pounce, they notices the look in his eyes. Their usual victims would always look like they were under a spell but this was…different. They couldn’t quite wrap their finger around it and in their puzzled state, he finally lets out a mutter,
“You’re the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.”
The siren’s eyes widened and they stared at him with an even more puzzled look than before. Their eyebrows furrow, “Excuse me?”, they scoff. Levi walks closer to them, a blush spreading across his cheeks, “I’m being serious! I’ve heard stories about how sirens are grotesque creatures but you..you’re so..” he pauses, biting his lower lip. Their face now turned to one of disgust, letting out an almost belch, “You’re a weird one. I’m trying to kill you!” Levi shakes his head, “R-Right, yeah…killing me,” he mutters. He steals a few glances towards them, growing more and more flustered by the minute.
The siren grows confused but also, flustered? Their eyebrow raised as they shake their head. Something was definitely off about this man, there was no way they could make him their dinner that night. A low melody escapes them and they practically smacks their fish-like tail in his face and swims back to the raging waves. Levi stumbles back, his trance still not quite wearing off as his eyes follow their graceful figure. He was disappointed as well as offended. “What a rude siren..” he mutters as he wipes the salty water off of his face. Levi huffs as he stomps away from the coast, his feet finally returning to land. Despite his slight annoyance at their behaviour, Emmet can’t help but reminisce about the fleeting moment of their encounter. Ever since then, he’d been coming by the ocean every night, hoping to catch a glimpse of the alluring beauty he had seen that night.
