Work Text:

Kendra screamed. It was raw and guttural, and like nothing Donnie had ever heard before from her. His head whipped around, from where he was holding off one of the Yōkai with his bō, and saw her. She wasn’t screaming anymore, but instead wheezing, holding her abdomen, where a sword stabbed clean through. The Yōkai he was fighting pushed him back, in his distraction.

“Kendra!” He shouted. The Yōkai who stabbed her pulled out the weapon, and she fell limply to the ground. As Donnie began trying to move towards her, the enemy he was currently fighting against struck him in the plastron with brute force, and he tumbled backwards.

Donatello heard distinct laughter, as their assailants simply left them there.

He scrambled towards her. The darkness of this alleyway in the Hidden City meant that everything was dark. He, via audio controls, turned his bō into a construction light. He needed to be able to see. He pulled out his first aid kit, and pulled her body up into a straight position, removing fabric from the stab wound.

Her hair was damp from sweat, and her eyebrows were furrowed in pain. There were tears in the corners of her eyes, and oh, there was so much blood. It was sticky, hot, and the smell of iron filled his lungs. Her face was covered in dust, dirt, and–focus.

Pulling out gauze, he turned his attention to the wound, quickly packing it with gauze. He hoped it would be enough. Kendra was still wheezing, whimpering in pain. Her hand came up, and held onto his arm for dear life, as he packed the wound as much as he could, pressing down on the puncture site.

Donnie had called for help, but when would they get here? She needed help immediately.

He could fix this. He put more pressure on the wound. Kendra’s head tilted away.

“Hey– Kendra. Stay awake, you cannot sleep now.” Donnie looked at her eyes. They were clenched shut. She turned back towards him, shakily exhaling.

“‘M Awak–” She was cut off by a violent cough, spluttering blood onto him. Her normally bright purple hair looked painfully dull in comparison to the dark crimson that painted them both now. Her eyes were now blown open.

“Kendra, look at me. You have internal bleeding, and–” Donnie felt nauseous. “Have lost a lot of blood.”

There was fear in her eyes. There was fear. He could still fix this.

“If we get you to a hospital, you will be okay– I mean, probably.” He was terrible at this. A gust of wind flew through the alley, sent a shiver down his spine, chilling and making the blood on his own hands, as he held her together, sent another wave of nausea through his form. He felt tears in his own eyes.

“I’m sorry– Kendra, stay awake.” He reminded her, as her grip on his arm, where she dug her nails into his skin, slackened.

“Keep talking,” she whispered. It likely hurt too much to speak any louder. Tears were streaming down her face, mixing with the blood.

Donnie froze up. “What do I talk about?”

“..Anything. Anything, Donnie.” Her eyes seemed to grow distant, but then she coughed up more blood. He moved one of his hands to wipe some of the blood from her face. She was nearly unrecognizable. The harsh lighting cast dark shadows on her face, and if she was pale from blood loss, the lighting made her look ghastly.

“Hey– uhm. Do you remember when we met?” Kendra squeezed his arm in affirmation. She slightly opened her lips.

“Y’u w… an idiot,” Kendra faintly smiled.

Donnie huffed lightly. “I guess I was.”

“Mhm..”

Donnie brushed away hair from her face, and then wiped away more blood. He was about to say something else, when Kendra’s free hand came up and rested on his hand.

“Donnie?” Her eyes looked straight at his. The air was perfectly still.

“Yeah?”

“'ll see–ya’ t’mm’row.”

She never did.
