Work Text:
As soon as d3rlord3 said those fateful words, he knew he was going to die.
But he felt at peace with it.
The knowledge swirling through his head, it hurts. He can't even look away from the screen. And who knows how long he has left before he runs out of food and water within arms reach. He has not had the strength to look.
He cannot look anyway.
Not without it feeling like his head is going to literally explode.
But then a certain sight makes him pause everything. Makes everything hurt just a little less.
He saw himself.
With Avery. The one who he had just saved from certain doom.
They were wearing matching suits, bells ringing in the air clearer than the endless fog of death slowly settling over him.
Avery was crying.
But not like d3rlord3 had seen as he had pushed the slime off the ledge.
No, these tears were…
Happy.
There were rings on both of their ring fingers.
Green and gold.
Emerald and topaz.
d3rlord3's breath hitched.
They could've been happy?… There could've been a happy ending for them both after all?
Before he even realized it, he was crying. Soldiers, knights, they never cried. But d3rlord3 was neither soldier or knight in that moment.
He was just a man.
And that is all he will be, as he lets his eyes close for the last time.
" Whatever you do at the crossroads... Keep moving forward. "
