Chapter Text
Petals of pink cherry blossoms dot the clear blue sky, the gusts of wind responsible announcing both the change in season and start of a new academic year. If only you had the time to admire the scene.
One of your socks has already slid past your heel, as you run towards the convenience store, rushing to meet your childhood best friend, Nanase Yumi. You yell your arrival as you near, sliding your backpack down an arm.
“Here,” you say, panting and slowing to a stop before grabbing Yumi’s hand to push a milk carton into it, “My mum told me to give this to you. To celebrate us starting high school!”
Yumi grins and steps forward to envelop you in a hug, which you eagerly return.
“We’re officially high schoolers now, yet you’re still running late. Did you stay up late again?” She asks, stepping back to begin the walk to school. You laugh awkwardly, walking beside her.
“I’m not that late! Only a couple minutes, and yes, I was. I couldn’t sleep, so I thought I’d do some research on our school forums.”
“For what?”
“To find out things about our new school!”
Yumi sighs in disbelief, “Did you find anything interesting then?”
“I’m not sure if it counts, since we’re not really into sports, but did you know that Inarazaki is actually really popular for their sports teams? Especially in volleyball. This year, there’s two popular new first-years who are supposed to be volleyball superstars: the Miya twins.”
“The Miya twins?”
“Yeah! Miya Atsumu and Miya Osamu,” you pull out your phone to show a picture of the two, only to panic when you see the time, “Shoot, we’re going to be super late if we don’t hurry up!”
You break into a run, making sure Yumi’s following behind you. We better make it before the gate closes!
Miya Atsumu may be an incredible athlete, but he can’t say he’s able to use his skills to their best ability for anything that isn’t related to volleyball. He despises this immensely as he finds himself out of breath running to school.
“You just had to hog the shower and take ages doing yer hair, didn’t ya?” Osamu yells beside him, “I shoulda left ya behind!”
“Shut up, ‘samu! I don’t wake up lookin’ this good ya know, my hair wasn’t co-operatin’!” Atsumu shoves a hand in twin brother’s face, only for Osamu to elbow his head in retaliation, “Ow! Are ya tryna mess up m’hair even more?”
Atsumu is two seconds away from starting a brawl in the middle of the street with Osamu when he finally sees the Inaraziki gates in his line of sight. He lets out a laugh of relief before turning to Osamu.
“Loser has to buy lunch!”
“It’s closed… It’s actually closed.”
Your hands grip the locked gates as you look for another way to get into the school.
“There’s no way this is happening… It's our first day, we’re gonna be in so much trouble!”
You grab Yumi’s hand in an attempt to comfort her.
“No, it’s fine! We still have time before the entrance ceremony starts, we just need to find another way in…”
Your train of thought is interrupted when you hear the sound of footsteps and… arguing? You turn towards the noise to see two boys running towards you, both pushing and yelling profanities at each other. The one with bright yellow hair reaches you first, hand slamming onto the gate and pulling on it.
“Shit! It’s fuckin’ closed, ‘samu!”
The other boy with grey hair reaches you seconds later, as you step back and watch in bewilderment, Yumi shuffling near you at the sight of the aggressive blonde. The grey haired boy, dubbed ‘Samu’ similarly grabs onto the gate and attempts to pull at it, albeit slightly gentler than his companion.
“Fuck,” ‘Samu’ curses, stepping back to look around before walking towards the wall next to the gate, “We’re gonna have to climb the wall.”
‘Samu’ easily jumps to grab the top of the wall and pulls himself up, the blonde boy following suit. Before either can jump to the other side though, you quickly step forward.
“Wait!” You yell, arms outstretched to grab the boys’ attention. It’s only then that they realise they are not alone, both raising their eyebrows at the sudden sight of two girls staring at them.
“You have to help us!” Before they can respond, you quickly grab Yumi by the shoulders to push her towards the wall the boys are perched on. You drop into a squat to grab her thighs and stand to lift her up; she yelps at the sudden loss of footing.
“Help her up!” You say to the boys, thankful that both are quick to react and hold their hands out. Yumi takes their hands and you help push her up as they pull, her legs eventually leaving your hold once she’s able to get a knee on the wall. Your now-empty hands find the wall as you lean against it in exertion. Wait, how am I supposed to get up now?
Before you can start to panic, you see a flash of blonde and hear a thud next to you. You find yourself gasping as you’re suddenly lifted from the ground.
“Atsumu, don’t drop ‘er!”
Atsumu?
“‘Course I’m not gonna drop ‘er, I’m not a weakling like ya!”
You look back to see that the blonde boy - Atsumu - has you by the waist, his height allowing you to reach the wall much easier than Yumi did with your help. Ignoring the feeling of his large hands gripping your waist, you grab the wall to pull yourself over and perch next to Yumi, greeting her with a shaky smile. You look behind to check on Atsumu, only to see him already lifting himself up to crouch next to you on the wall. Your eyes meet his, a wave of familiarity hitting you.
Atsumu… Miya Atsumu?
You turn to observe ‘Samu’ as he starts to speak,, “Do you girls need help getting down too?”
“No, that’s alright! You’ve already helped us so much!” Yumi hurriedly blurts out; you notice her face has flushed red, as your gaze moves from ‘Samu’ to hers. He narrows his eyes slightly before shrugging, turning to swiftly jump down onto the grass. Yumi turns to face the wall and begins to gradually let herself down. You know your descent is going to be far from graceful, so you turn to Atsumu and wait for him to go down first, not particularly wanting an audience; only to find him already looking at you.
“Atsumu!” ‘Samu’ yells, as he starts to run, “You gonna get yer ass down yet or what? Did ya forget we’re late?”
That seems to wake Atsumu from his stupor, as a frown immediately dawns on his face before he jumps down from the wall to chase and argue with ‘Samu’ again. You feel the adrenaline seep from your body, sighing as you drop yourself down from the wall, only folding your ankle as you land.
“You okay?” Yumi asks, quick to catch your elbow.
“Perfectly fine! Though really I should be asking you,” You say with a smirk, “You are sporting a very bright blush right now.”
Yumi slaps her hands to her cheeks, “I am not!”
You laugh before grabbing her hand and winking, beginning the run in the same direction as the boys, “C’mon, we have to go! We’ll talk about this properly at lunch!”
